2 MEN in the IoT Value Chain Application-Ready for the IoT? Applications Vertical Applications A look at the MEN portfolio of computer systems and system components with respect to their position in the Internet of Things shows that they can also be described as a combination of processing and communication units sitting between the little data (sensors, actors the fog ) and the big data (the cloud ). These IoT-ready embedded systems are characterized by the ability to exchange data via wired or wireless networks, connecting between each other and to the world, as well as controlling and influencing each other. IoT Clouds and Web Services Devices and Sensors SoCs and Chips Systems and Platforms Enabling Secure Communication The requirements of the application determine whether the communication is based on the public Internet, or a more private network structure. As security is one of the biggest concerns in the connected world, MEN as a hardware provider makes sure to choose the appropriate hardware and operating system components as the basis for an embedded system that can claim to be application-ready for IoT. Ensuring boot image integrity and securing communication using encryption, or by sealing-off the network, is a precondition. Boot image integrity can be achieved via measures like TPM (Trusted Platform Module) or adaptation of the BIOS or the boot loader. Encryption can be implemented via hardware encryption engines or via software. Networks can be sealed-off from the outside world, e.g. from the internet, using firewalls and white or black listing can help with sealing off mission-critical from non-mission-critical networks. Components Rugged Devices in the IoT In mission-critical industrial as well as transportation environments, computer devices have to be developed for harsh environments and must withstand shock, vibration, humidity and extreme temperatures. Such solutions often come with compliance according to market specific standards such as EN for railways or E-Mark for road and off-road vehicles. Moving Devices in the IoT It is considerably more difficult to implement reliable wireless transmission for a rapidly moving vehicle like a train, a bus, or a plane (vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-land communication). Large amounts of data need to be transferred at high speeds, over long distances and while driving through tunnels, mostly in real-time. Typical examples are passenger information systems, multimedia access units, surveillance systems for the recording and management of camera data, or service systems with diagnosis and maintenance functions.

3 High Speed Switches High Speed Ethernet Switches with 29 GBit Switch Matrix on CompactPCI Serial The sister cards G101 and G102 are fully managed industrial CompactPCI Serial Ethernet switches. They are equipped with a 29 Gbit/s switch matrix, and provide up to 25 Gigabit Ethernet ports for high-speed communication. To realize this mass of available Ethernet ports, MEN also provides a specific CompactPCI Serial backplane, enabling additional 16 Ethernet lines to the maximum eight, which have been defined in the standard specification. The Ethernet ports can all be connected to the rear or three can be used on the front, either as three robust M12 (A-coded on G101 / X-coded on G102) connectors or as two RJ45 connectors and a 2.5 Gb SFP interface which can be used as high speed uplink (RJ45 and uplink only available on G101). One additional connector on the front is available as a service interface. By using MEN s series of line cards, all 25 Ethernet ports can be led to the front, allowing a flexible configuration with up to three GExx cards, which can be again extended by up to three GPxx cards. Each of these line cards lead four Ethernet interfaces from the backplane to the front depending on the respective line card - either via M12 or RJ45 connectors, optionally A- or X-coded, with or without PoE. Various software protocols ensure data security, synchronous Ethernet, stable operation and temperature monitoring. The G101 and G102 also support IEEE 1588v2 (Precision Clock Synchronization Protocol) on ports one to twelve and EEE (energy-efficient Ethernet) on all ports. All switches and line cards are compliant to railway standard EN class TX and have an operating temperature of -40 to +85 C. 4 Turn-Key BTO Network Switch Built-to-Order: CompactPCI Serial-based Managed Gigabit Ethernet Switch Based on MEN s functional, built-to-order concept, the high-performance Ethernet switch NH30 provides a wide range of configuration options for use in several harsh and mobile applications. The switch s simple system integration and elimination of expensive specialized software ensures a fast time-to-market, while reducing acquisition, operating and maintenance costs. The NH30 uses the G101 and G102 as heart of the system, supporting up to 25 Gigabit Ethernet ports and a 29 Gbit/s carrier grade switch matrix. The system can be configured with up to six line cards as either active or passive copper connections, or as SFP interfaces and PoE+ options to enable the connection of different devices (see previous page). Pre-installed carrier-grade, managed firmware from Vitesse supports almost all popular protocols on the market, including standard ring and protection switching/ring protocols. Two AC or DC power supplies ensure reliability and redundancy. When used with one of the power supplies, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can protect the system against power fluctuations. Due to the built-to-order concept and a high stockpiling of all components, the delivery time can be drastically reduced. Within a short time, customers receive their close-to-series prototypes and can immediately start developing their application. 5 Networking in Transportation Ethernet Switches for Rail and Public Transportation MEN delivers a flexible range of Ethernet switches and a wireless access point especially designed for use in in extremely rugged environmental conditions, e.g. found in the rail and public transportation market. The NMxx family is built on a compact box PC format, coming with a rugged aluminum enclosure. This is not just for conduction cooling - turning the box into a maintenance-free device - but also protects the enclosed electronics, meeting requirements up to IP40. All electrical components are soldered to resist shock and vibration, and are protected against dust and humidity through conformal coating. The Ethernet channels are accessible on the front via robust M12 connectors. The supported ultra wide range power supply with interruption class S2 allows the family to conform to EN for railway. While using as many standard COTS components as possible, all networking devices and components allow flexible and modular configuration options. High Speed PCI Express on CompactPCI Serial While the CompactPCI Serial standard offers a full mesh communication via Ethernet on the backplane, the switch board GX1 enables the same advantages for PCIe-based connections. GX1 is a high-end switch fabric for the system slot, which supports both multi-root and mutihost configuration. Perfect partners for GX1 are multicore CPU cards (like G25A or G52A from MEN), which support PCIe 3.0 via the backplane and can be used for building up networking systems with high demands for data transfer rates and computing performance, e.g. for a super-computer or for the data-intensive image processing. Development and production of rugged and reliable products Our boards and systems are developed to meet requirements such as temperature ranges between 40 C and +85 C through convection or conduction cooling, shock, vibration, chemical influence or the option of coating against humidity right from the start. 9 Application Examples Infotainment with Wi-Fi Streaming Multiport Gigabit Switch for Entertainment Server The G101 standard managed switch card with a 29 Gbit/s switch matrix is used in an in-flight entertainment server. The components used in the server are from different suppliers and based on standard protocols to provide interoperability. They are connected in a network ring topology increasing reliability. The customized entertainment-focused box PC delivers media content such as films, music and online newspapers via an integrated Wi-Fi access point to the user's display or own mobile devices in long-distance coaches. The conduction cooled box PC comes with integrated hot-pluggable storage shuttles, an integrated Ethernet switch with PoE support and complies with E-mark requirements. Passenger Comfort and Diagnostic Data SCADA System for Fleet Management The custom-specific, fanless, SCADA-based automotive data logger is used to record and pre-process information in trucks and busses. Information from one, or several, vehicles is sent to the headquarters via UMTS, indicating the vehicle s status and position as well as when it s next scheduled maintenance is due. Application-specific functions, such as CAN bus interfaces, are implemented as IP cores in the onboard FPGA. This wireless service system takes care of passenger comfort functions like video/audio streaming, information about the tour schedule via a wireless customer portal as well as for reservation-, master- and diagnostic data recording and transmitting and analyzing passenger information. The system is based on MEN COTS products: the CompactPCI Serial multicore CPU board with an PCI Express Mini Card carrier providing the UMTS and WLAN functionality and an interface card for GPS and serial I/O. Oilfield Server Platform and Router WLAN Server for Company Buses The CompactPCI WLAN server supplies employees during their commute with passenger internet, local portals and passenger information services. The complete Wi-Fi based entertainment solution uses F223 carrier cards for two PCIe Mini Cards and up to 18 SIM cards on one board. In case the data volume of one SIM card is depleted, an easy change to the next SIM card is possible. This robust server platform is installed directly on the drilling sites and communicates with the operator s data processing center in real time from here via GSM, relaying all the data relating to the position of the drill head, resistance in the drilling mud, as well as general function and error analyses. The powerful computer with 200 W of waste heat use three times conduction cooling frames and housings to ensure sufficient heat dissipation and protection against the rough sea.
