1 Avaya Solution & Interoperability Test Lab Application Notes for Extreme Networks Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching (EAPS) with Avaya Communication Manager and Avaya P330 and C360 Stackable Switches - Issue 1.0 Abstract These Application Notes describe a procedure for configuring Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching (EAPS) on connections between Extreme Networks BlackDiamond 10K and Alpine 3800 Series switches and Avaya P330 and C360 Series switches. During compliance testing, EAPS was configured to protect links carrying Voice over IP (VoIP) traffic generated by Avaya Media Servers, Media Gateways, Avaya IP Telephones, and Avaya IP Softphones. Phone calls that traversed EAPS-protected connections experienced a short interruption when protection switching occurred. Information in these Application Notes has been obtained through compliance testing and additional technical discussions. Testing was conducted via the DeveloperConnection Program at the Avaya Solution and Interoperability Test Lab. 1 of 13

2 1. Introduction Ethernet Automatic Protection Switching (EAPS) is a fast protection switching scheme introduced by Extreme Networks for Ethernet switches interconnected in a ring topology. EAPS provides protection against a single break in the ring (multiple breaks in the ring are not guaranteed to be protected). EAPS can also provide resiliency to two parallel connections between two Ethernet switches. For example, two Ethernet switches directly connected to each other by a pair of links essentially form a two-node ring. EAPS in such an arrangement provides resiliency similar to that provided by Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), i.e. the redundant path is disabled when the main path is operational and the redundant path is enabled when the main path fails, except that EAPS convergence times are significantly lower than those of STP. In the compliance-tested configuration described in these Application Notes, Extreme Networks and Avaya Ethernet switches are connected to each other by pairs of links, and EAPS is configured to provide protection against single link failures on each link pair. Figure 1 shows a sample network configuration consisting of an Avaya P333T-PWR Stackable Switch, an Avaya C363T-PWR Stackable Switch, an Extreme Networks BlackDiamond Switch, an Extreme Networks Alpine 3808 Switch, an Avaya S8500 Media Server running Avaya Communication Manager software, an Avaya G650 Media Gateway, Avaya IP Telephones, and Avaya IP Softphones. Note that the approach described herein is applicable to other Avaya Media Servers and Media Gateways. In Figure 1, three two-node rings are formed: one comprised of the BlackDiamond and Alpine 3808, one comprised of the Alpine 3808 and the P333T-PWR, and one comprised of the BlackDiamond and the C363T-PWR. In the first ring, EAPS is configured on both the BlackDiamond and Alpine In the latter two rings, EAPS is configured only on the Alpine 3808 and BlackDiamond because EAPS is not supported on the P333T-PWR and C363T-PWR. However, the P333T-PWR and C363T-PWR can be configured such that they mimic EAPS-capable switches, with the exception that they could not exchange EAPS control messages. 2 of 13

EAPS Functionality Overview In an EAPS ring, one switch in the ring is designated as the master node and the other switches in the ring are designated as transit nodes. The master node connects to the ring on two ports, with one designated as the primary port and the other designated as the secondary port. Each transit node also has a primary port and a secondary port, but their distinction is ignored. During normal operation, the master node blocks all inbound and outbound non-control traffic on the secondary port to prevent a loop. EAPS control traffic, however, is always allowed through on both primary and secondary ports, and allows the master node to detect breaks in the ring. If the master node detects a break in the ring, it unblocks the secondary port and allows all traffic to 3 of 13

4 be transmitted and received on its secondary port. When the break is restored, the master node again blocks all inbound and outbound non-control traffic on the secondary port. Configure the Extreme Networks BlackDiamond In the sample configuration of Figure 1, the BlackDiamond is connected to the Alpine 3808 by a pair of Gigabit Ethernet links. The BlackDiamond and Alpine 3808 essentially form a topological two-node ring and thus, an EAPS ring comprised of the two switches may be configured. Either of the two switches may be designated as the master node for this particular EAPS ring. Similarly, the BlackDiamond is connected to the C363T-PWR by a pair of Gigabit Ethernet links. The BlackDiamond and C363T-PWR also form a topological two-node ring and thus another EAPS ring. However, since EAPS is not supported on the C363T-PWR, the BlackDiamond must be designated as the master node for this particular EAPS ring Ports for Avaya S8500 and Avaya G650 In the sample configuration of Figure 1, the Avaya S8500 Media Server and Avaya G650 Media Gateway are connected to the Extreme Networks BlackDiamond The following 4 of 13

Routing The following commands enable IP forwarding on the VLANs protected by the Extreme and C363T EAPS rings. enable ipforwarding vlan vlan121 enable ipforwarding vlan vlan31 enable ipforwarding vlan vlan33 The following command creates a static route to the Distribution B network with the Alpine 3808 as the next hop. configure iproute add Configure the Extreme Networks Alpine 3808 As discussed in Section 4, the Alpine 3808 and BlackDiamond are connected by a pair of Gigabit Ethernet links, and form a two-node EAPS ring. Either of the two switches may be designated as the master node for this particular EAPS ring. The Alpine 3808 is connected to the P333T-PWR by a pair of Gigabit Ethernet links. The Alpine 3808 and P333T-PWR also form a topological two-node ring and thus another EAPS ring. The C363T-PWR is unaware of the usage of the control VLAN and thus treats it as it would with any other VLAN. 9 of 13

Three EAPS rings were traversed, two of which included Avaya P333T-PWR and C363T-PWR switches. 10 of 13

11 6.1. General Test Approach The general test approach was to make phone calls across multiple EAPS rings and monitor the calls for any interruptions, degradations, and drops under various link failures. The failure conditions included: On the master node of any one of three EAPS rings, disconnect the link on the primary port only. On the master node of any one of three EAPS rings, disconnect the link on the secondary port only. On the master node of each of the three EAPS rings, disconnect the link on the primary port only. On the master node of each of the three EAPS rings, disconnect the link on the secondary port only. On the master node of each of the three EAPS rings, disconnect the link on either the primary or secondary port Test Results All test cases completed successfully. The phone calls experience a short interruption (1-1.5 seconds) when the links on the master nodes primary ports were disconnected. In addition, when the links on the master nodes primary ports were connected but the links on the secondary ports were disconnected, the phone calls did not experience any interruptions. 7. Verification Steps The following steps may be used to verify the configuration: 1. From each subnet/vlan, ping IP endpoints (Avaya S8500 Media Server, Avaya Media Gateway G650 boards, Avaya IP Telephones, PCs, etc.) and verify connectivity. 2. On the BlackDiamond and Alpine 3808, verify that each EAPS ring is enabled and up by entering the command show eaps. 3. Verify that calls can be made to and from each Avaya IP Telephone and Softphone. 4. Place a call and disconnect the active link, and verify that the call remains active. 8. Conclusion These Application Notes illustrate a procedure for configuring EAPS to protect links carrying Voice over IP (VoIP) traffic generated by Avaya Media Servers, Media Gateways, Avaya IP Telephones, and Avaya IP Softphones. EAPS was configured on connections between Extreme Networks BlackDiamond 10K and Alpine 3800 Series switches and Avaya P330 and C360 Series switches. EAPS functionality was successfully compliance tested and observed to have minimal impact on Avaya IP telephony in the configuration described in these Application Notes. 10.
