Multilayer Visualization Geographic Map with full network topology Service focused views that span across layers Multilayer troubleshooting visualizations EPNM Multilayer Network Operations
What does operate a multilayer network mean The Problem: Lack of network visibility and topology generate a sub-optimal network utilization and raise the cost for routine maintenance work The Solution: Correlate GIS based inventory and HW utilization to services leveraging topology information The Value: Reduce the cost of operating the network enabling automation. BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 8
Visualization of Fibers on Geo Map Inventory of fiber ducts Free text fields to store strand usage Geo visualization of fiber ducts Import and export using.kml format BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 9
OTDR and fiber break locator tool Intuitive selection of OTDR Zone and Scan properties Integration of Scan result and Geo map A scan measurement is translated into a street address. BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 10
SRLG Assignement Fiber-ducts geo information allows to identify resources that shares the same risk (i.e., same fiber duct) Managed links can be associated to fiber ducts Links that share a duct or portion of it share also the same risk UI to easily assign SRLG BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 11
Geo localization of fiber OTDR results
OTDR Basics The OTDR behaves like a radar in the optical domain. A probe optical pulse is launched from one fiber s end the resulting back-scattered light is measured against time (or distance from source). The measurement provides: Fiber length Fiber type (att. Slope) Position and loss / reflections of optical connectors Position and loss of splices Visual feedback of any concentrated event. BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 13
EPNM and OTDR EPNM actively monitors devices and device s configuration EPNM can understand what ports are connected via fibers (OTS links) using OSC out of band channel and OSPF OTDR scan can be performed on OTS links Fiber Geographic information can be associated to OTS links BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 14
EPNM and OTDR scans Each OTS link is bi-directional representing a fiber pair Each fiber can be measured in both direction (OTDR scans are more accurate in the first part of the fiber) 4 measurements can be done on each OTS link BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 15
EPNM Correlates OTDR scan results with geographic information EPNM calculate the location of any scan event EPNM uses a proprietary algorithm to hand fiber segments, missing fibers information, An accuracy information is provided with the location BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 16
OTDR Demo and Behind the Scenes
Geographic data Import and Export EPNM is compatible with Keyhole Markup Language (KML) KML was developed for use with Google Earth, which was originally named Keyhole Earth Viewer. It was created by Keyhole, Inc, which was acquired by Google in 2004 BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 18

Geographic Coordinates system used in EPNM EPNM uses the Latitude and Longitude as Geographic system (same as GPS and many map providers) with 3 different notations degrees minutes seconds (DMS): N E. used optionally for compatibility degrees decimal minutes (DDM): N E. displayed in all panels decimal degrees(dd): (+/-) (+/-) used in the internal model BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 22
Why 3 different notation? degrees minutes seconds (DMS): N E. used optionally degrees decimal minutes (DDM): N E. displayed in all panels decimal degrees(dd): (+/-) (+/-) used in the Internal model DD is easier for calculation Why using degree, minutes and seconds then? DDM is the format used in navigation Hint DMS is the old school navigation BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 23
Why using degree, minutes and seconds then? Latitude and longitude are measurement of angles One of the oldest angular unit is the degree that uses the sexagesimal system Sexagesimal (base 60) is a numeral system with sixty as its base. It is an ancient Sumerians eritage in use in the 3rd millennium BC Sexagesimal system is still in use today for angles and time, because 60 is a Superior highly composite number (also 360) it has a lot of divisors It is common sense to use quarters of an hour when reading an analog clock. A nautical mile is defined as one minute of latitude (1852 m, versus the terrestrial mile 1609 m, that is deined as mille passi of a Roman soldier) BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 24
EPNM as predictive fiber cut tool
Prediction of fiber cuts Statistically identify events that can lead to a fiber cut In our scenarios we have identified that in a metro optical network, fiber cuts frequently happen at construction sites or roadworks Select a source of information with planned and active constructions/road work sites e.g. municipality public databases, social media and navigation apps Correlate above information with customer services EPNM can identify fiber ducts laid in proximity of a work site and find the associate services Impact analysis can be performed on existing services or new services can be routed away from the work site BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 26
Path calculation Centralized PCE vs distributed Control Plane EPNM uses an externals PCE to pre-calculate the paths of DWDM circuits EPNM provisioning EPNM Inventory DWDM Network WSON PCE WSON algorithm Calculated path is used as constraints for the WSON (DWDM Control plane) Constraints can be include, exclude or he full explicit path The DWDM circuits is in any case a signaled circuit Include constraints are hard and remain part of the circuit itself Restoration function is performed by the distributed WSON BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 27
Predictive Fault Detection Demo Work site information are retrieve from a traffic map The fiber duct geo information of EPNM allow to correlate to services New circuits can be routed away from the risky link using the Optical PCE WSON can be use to re-route and re-tune existing circuits BRKNMS Cisco and/or its affiliates. All rights reserved. Cisco Public 28
