Unexpected accidents can cause a fire or electrical shocks. Warning Printer location Do not set up the printer in any location exposed to alcohol, thinner, or any other type of volatile liquid. If a flammable liquid comes into contact with electrical components inside the printer, this could cause a fire or electrical shock. Power Supply Never handle the power cord with wet hands. This could cause electrical shock. Insert the power cord securely and completely into the power source. If the power cord is not inserted completely, this could cause a fire or electrical shock. Do not use any power cord other than the one provided. This could cause a fire or electrical shock. Also, never use the power cord with any other electrical device. Never cut the power cord or attempt to modify it, and never stretch it or bend it forcefully. Never place a heavy object on the power cord. Damaged sections of the power cord could cause a short circuit and lead cause a fire or electrical shock. Never connect the power cord to a power strip or any power source shared by other electrical devices. This could cause a fire or electrical shock. Never knot the power cord or wrap it around itself. This could cause a fire or electrical shock. Periodically disconnect the power cord and use a dry cloth to wipe away dust that has collected on the plug and the area around the power source. Leaving the cord plugged in and not cleaned for a long period, especially in an area subject to dust, oil, and humidity, could cause the insulation material to deteriorate and lead to a fire. 2

3 In an Emergency... Cleaning the Printer Pacemakers Safety Warnings and Precautions If the printer emits smoke or strange odors, continuing to use the printer could lead to a fire or electrical shock. Switch the printer off immediately and remove the power plug from the power source. Contact the nearest service center. Use a damp cloth to clean the printer. Never use alcohol, benzene, thinner, or any other type of flammable cleaner. If such materials contact any electrical component inside the printer, a fire or electric shock may occur. This printer generates a low magnetic field. Anyone wearing a pacemaker who experiences discomfort while working around the printer should leave the area. Consult a physician before continuing to work around the printer. Caution Printer location Never set the printer on an unstable or vibrating surface. If the falls over, this could cause personal injury. Never set up the printer in a location that is exposed to high humidity or large amounts of dust, or exposed to direct sunlight, high temperature, or open flame. This could cause a fire or electrical shock. Use the printer location in an environment where temperature and humidity are within the ranges of 5 C to 35 C (41 F to 95 F) and 10 to 90% RH (with no condensation). Never place the printer on a heavy wool or shag carpet. This could allow something to enter the printer and cause a fire. Microsoft, Windows and Windows NT are registered trademarks of Microsoft Corporation in the United States. 3

4 Safety Warnings and Precautions Moving the Printer Power Supply To avoid the hazard of a dangerous fire, keep the area around the power supply where the printer power cord is connected so you can disconnect it immediately if the printer starts operating abnormally (emitting smoke or odd noises, etc.). Locate the printer as close as possible to the power supply and make sure the power supply is easily accessible. Never install the printer near large office equipment or any other type of electrical device that emits a strong magnetic field. This could cause abnormal operation or damage the printer. The printer alone weighs 40 kg (88 lb.). To prevent painful back or other injury, at least two people, one each on the left and right side, are required to move the printer. When you move the printer, be sure to remove the printer from the stand. Two or more people should firmly grip the handles provided below each side of the printer. Gripping either side of the printer at any other location is not safe and could cause the printer to fall and cause injury. Always grip the plug to remove it from the power supply. Pulling on the power cord could damage it and lead to a fire or electrical shock. Never use and extension cord. This could cause a fire or electrical shock. To prevent fire or electrical shock, never use a power supply source other than the one rated for the printer in the country where you purchased the printer. AC V, 50/60 Hz Cleaning the Printer Always disconnect the power cord before cleaning the printer. If the printer is switched on accidentally, moving parts inside the printer could cause personal injury. 4

5 Printhead, Ink Tanks and Maintenance Cartridge Safety Warnings and Precautions Always store consumables in a safe location where it is out of the reach of small children. The image is still scratchy or broken after doing the procedure above two or three times, the printhead may be worn and at the end of its service life. Call for service or contact the dealer where you bought the printer. 37

38 Cleaning the Printhead If the nozzles become blocked, cleaning the printhead may recover optimum printer operation. Types of Printhead Cleaning Head Cleaning A: Execute when printing appears uneven, or when the printhead is dirty. This cleaning method consumes the least amount of ink. Head Cleaning A requires at least one minute. Head Cleaning B: Do this cleaning if no ink is coming out of the printhead or if Head Cleaning A did not correct the problem. Head Cleaning B requires at least 3 minutes. Important If one execution of Head Cleaning A does not correct the problem, perform Head Cleaning B. If Head Cleaning B does not correct the problem, repeat Head Cleaning B two or three times. If Head Cleaning B does not solve the problem, then the printhead could be damaged and should be replaced. Frequently performing Head Cleaning B consumes ink, so use it carefully. 38

However, please remember that using this feature can cause changes in the color hues over the entire image so you should check the hues as you are printing. The overall printout appears reddish or bluish. The color balance settings are not correct. Use the Color Calib. function menu to perform the color balance adjustments for each color Y, M, PM, C, PC, K. 52

53 Unexpected Printing Results Other Problems Symptom Problem Solution Ink consumption is exceedingly high. The message MTCart Full Soon does not disappear even after replacing a new maintenance cartridge. Media is not cutting straight Roll media does not enter the feed slot Power does not switch on There are many sheets with large areas of color. Executing Head Cleaning B very often. The printer consumes ink for the initial ink tank filling. The printer has not yet recognized the new maintenance cartridge. The media is wrinkled at the cutting position. Roll media is curled. Disconnect the power cord with the power switch on. Printing photographs or other images that require a lot of color fill consumes large amounts of ink. This is not unusual. Head Cleaning B consumes a large amount of ink (this is not unusual). After the printer has been moved, or after the printer has been stored and not used for a long period (excluding other problems with the printhead), you should not execute Head Cleaning B. The first time the printer used after it is set up or moved to a new location, the ink level display may drop to as low as 80% as a result of filling the printhead and ink tanks with ink (this is not abnormal). Replace the maintenance cartridge and press the Information button. After replacing a new maintenance cartridge the message disappears upon executing a print or cleaning operation. Flatten the media at the cutting position. Insert either the left corner or right corner to feed diagonally, then straighten and feed it so it is parallel. Wait three minutes with the power cord unplugged, then plug in the power cord again and switch the printer on. 53
