TN185 Page of 12 TECHNICAL NOTE Date: 11th Aug 08 (rev2) Ref 185 Raised by: AT/tc Distributed to: As required Soundtracs Digico (UK) Ltd, Unit 10, Silverglade Business Park, Leatherhead Road, Chessington, Surrey, KT9 2QL, UK Tel: Fax: support@digiconsoles.com DS00/B VERSION 4 UPGRADE INSTRUCTIONS THIS NOTE IS FOR MIXERS ALREADY FITTED WITH NEW PC SEE TN 184 FOR MIXERS REQUIRING REPLACEMENT PC Very important! Upgrading a Console to V4 involves a number of stages and requires you to follow these instructions in detail. IMPORTANT! Read these instructions completely before attempting this work! WARNING: These consoles contain dangerous voltages: AC mains, DC at very high voltage & high frequency, high voltage backlight supplies. Disconnect the mains supply cable(s) to the mixer before attempting any internal work! The following procedure should be carried out by qualified personnel only! Time for installation: 1 hour 30 minutes. Small electrical screwdriver - 1pt Pozidrive (PZ = Pozidrive and not PH = Phillips) and a 2pt for the ISA cards retaining screws. 2.0 mm Hex driver (Allan key) to remove the panels Before attempting the upgrade, make a backup of any sessions and sockets files you wish to keep from your existing drives to a USB key. Important Note Version 3 DS00/B Monitor files (*.mon) are not compatible with Version 4 software and any monitoring configurations and calibrated levels will need to be recreated. Note certain paid-for options such as FX will require re-enabling with factory passwords. If required contact your distributor BEFORE commencing work to obtain this. Determine what PC upgrade do you need? Mixers shipped before September 2006 are usually fitted with a Kontron PC that require replacing. The Kontron PC can easily be seen as it has a flat heatsink with no fins. This Technical Note covers these versions. Mixers shipped between September 2006 and June 2007 approximately will have a BlueChip PC that require replacing with an updated version. This Technical Note covers these versions. Mixers shipped after June 2007 approximately will have a BlueChip PC that is fully up to date. This Technical Note does NOT cover these versions, refer to TN185. To confirm if the PC in a mixer shipped between September 2006 and June 2007 requires the BlueChip PC changed check the following.

TN185 Page of 12 There are 2 versions of the BlueChip CPU PCB but only ONE requires the changing due a modification. The only way to identify the type of PC card is to look in the engine. The issue number is JUST visible on the PC card, just under the heatsink adjacent to the USB, serials and keyboard connectors. ISS 2.1 may require the PC to be changed and is illustrated here. See next picture PC marked V2.2 does NOT require any change. In this case continue with this note. If the ISS 2.1 PC card is marked TN180 on the RAM socket, as shown, then the PC has already been modified and does not need to removed or swapped. In this case continue with this note. If it is ISS 2.1 and not marked TN180 it should be swapped, In this case refer to TN184, do not follow this note

TN185 Page of 12 Ensure you have taken appropriate anti-static precautions The kit includes a wrist strap and heel strap. Ensure you wear both. The wrist strap should be connected to the chassis of the mixer whilst you work on it. The heel strap ensures the skin of your leg is connected to the floor and not isolated by a rubber soled shoe. Avoid working in areas with synthetic floor coverings or carpet, especially polypropylene material, as opposed to natural materials such as solid wood or wool. Ideally work at a proper workbench with ESD safe features, such as a metal frame. Before work, try to discharge yourself into a mains earth fitment, water pipe etc. This is important as parts of this kit are static sensitive and even if any damage is not immediate, so called latent damage can occur, where a device may be partially degraded yet continue to perform its intended function. However, the operating life of the device maybe reduced dramatically as the components have been weakened leading to failure after a period of time. The upgrade involves: 1. Replacing Hard Drive(s), these may be Single 2.5 Hitachi 40/60GB (or Dual to special order). 2. Replacing ETX PC BIOS. 3. Replacing RamStore ISA Card. 4. Moving Network Cable (if fitted). 5. Remove existing Network Card (if fitted). 6. Remove Modem and connections cable/socket (if fitted). Procedure: Ensure you have taken appropriate anti-static precautions etc. Remove Master Panel by undoing surface screws and lift Panel as shown. Version 3 DS00/B Master Panel lifted. Make a note of how the various cables are fixed and disconnect. Remove panel and store carefully.

TN185 Page of 12 The following illustrate DS00 internal connections. Removing Cables from Master Panel. Drive assembly and HD Silencer Box. To remove the existing Hard Drive(s), remove the screws on the lid of the Metal box we refer to as a Silencer Box used the noise of the old style drives to a minimum. Remove the IDE cable and the power connector from the drive. The drive should slide out of the case. Remove the foam lining and 4 retaining screws to remove the box completely. Note Mixers shipped after Nov 07 will not be fitted with this box, but are already fitted with the adapter plate and bracket shown below. Note the location of the IDE HDD socket on the motherboard and that there are 2 adjacent sockets, one is not normally used. If removing a twin drive option note the 2 IDE sockets. The primary (main) is the socket nearest the edge of the PCB (nearer the rear of the mixer)

TN185 Page of 12 Fitting Replacement Hard Drives The new hard drive is probably a new fitting. See Picture for the new assembly of fitting bracket and fixing adapter plate. Note this shown with the standard single drive. The twin drive option uses Dual disk-on-module drives. Refer to TN181 for fitting these. New Drive bracket and location. To fit the new drive, make sure you have fitted the network cable first if this option is fitted to the mixer. See below. Ensure Silencer Box is removed from Console as noted above. Refer to pictures. See the new drive is located in bracket, in turn on an adapter which fits to the same holes as the silencer box. Line the bracket and plate so that it can be screwed it back to the console chassis and there is no obstruction with the Heatsink fins. The new drive should be assembled with either a custom IDE cable (or an IDE adaptor board ) either type is perfectly adequate, as shipped with your Version 4 kit. Note how the replacement IDE cable is routed to avoid going over the top of the new heatsink. Plug into the socket noted earlier. IDE Cable options note orientation of cable/pins and IDE adapter board.

TN185 Page of 12 Note that the power pins on the IDE adapter board MAY short against the Drive housing if this is the case, shorten the pins as shown. Care must be taken to ensure sure Pin 1 on the IDE cable (the red coloured wire) matches Pin 1 in the Drive Pin 1 is next to the ID Jumper pins. If the pins are misaligned or offset you WILL cause serious damage to the system. And don t re-assemble just yet see Fitting the Network Cable if the network option is installed. Rearrangement of network connection If the DS00 is fitted with a networking option then the Cat 5 RJ45 is fitted in the rear of the console. The cable runs from the rear of the console to the RJ45 socket in the PC Remove the Netgear FA311 network card from the system completely (removing 1 ISA fixing screw). Do not fit any other card its place. Note most DS00 do not have the network option. The new socket for the 8 way RJ45 network plug is located on the PC base board, underneath the Hard Drive fixing bracket this should be left loose until the network cable is relocated. Old Network Card (if fitted) and New network connection note drive assembly removed for easy access. Remove the modem (if fitted) and associated cable and clip-in socket on the rear panel. Replace this with the blanking label supplied. The Modem is not supported in V4. Note most DS00 do not have the modem option.

TN185 Page of 12 Installation of revised control wiring and revised RamStore ISA PCB Remove screw holding Timecode card (marked P13875) and ease the card out of its socket. This card is located towards the right hand side of the mixer, looking into the console with the faders in front of you. Label the connectors then remove all the Worksurface ribbons, leaving the 16 way Timecode and two 10 way RS422 ribbons connected. Also leave the 2 way Molex connector (usually attached to blue and white wires) connected. Timecode card Layout Remove RamStore card (marked P14613) (1 screw) and remove 10 way (meters) and 34 way (engine) ribbons. Swap the card with the new card supplied. This is a modified version of the same card. Ensure the old card is labeled as soon as it is removed from the mixer to avoid mixing this up with the replacement PCB. Move the worksurface ribbons that you removed from the Timecode card to the RamStore as illustrated below. You may need to remove some cable ties to allow rearrangement of the cables. On replacing the RamStore card, the 10 way (meters) and 34 way (engine) go in the same connectors as the old card. The worksurface connectors start at the top left connector (On a DS00/B this would be the Master), the next connector to the right is the 1 st worksurface (Input Surface to the left of the master), then optional 2 nd W/S, then optional 3 rd worksurface, then any GPI/GPO cards that may have been fitted. Up to four extra worksurfaces can be fitted via the SCSI style connectors on the rear panel of the Console. Two Combi cards or GPI/GPO card connectors should be fitted to the right most sockets (as illustrated below pic 13). - RamStore ISA card with worksurface and (Gray) Combi ribbons.

TN185 Page of 12 RamStore ISA card layout. Replace RamStore card and screw both RamStore and Timecode ISA cards back. Reassembly Carefully recheck all work done up to this point (tick the boxes!): Reconnect Master panel connectors and place panel back in place. Connect power and but do NOT switch on, yet. As the mixer has a new style PC fitted from new and this was not replaced, then the existing PC requires the BIOS to be reprogrammed to upgrade from V1 to V4 operation.

TN185 Page of 12 The following notes only apply if the console already had a BlueChip processor fitted operating on V3 Having reassembled the mixer, insert the DiGiCo Version 4 BIOS upgrade key, supplied as part of the upgrade kit, with the power off. Switch on the mixer, Boot into BIOS Setup by pressing <F2> repeatedly as the power comes on. On the BIOS screen, set to boot from USB. Use cursor keys to go to main menu Cursor down to system configuration features press enter Ensure legacy USB support is enabled Escape from the main page and use cursor keys to go to boot menu Cursor down and ensure removable is at the top of the list. If not high light this and press + to move the removable to the top of the list. Next, cursor down the Hard drive listing, press return Cursor down to highlight USB device and press + to move the USB device priority to the top of the list above the (PM) and (SM) entries Press <F10> to Save and Exit. This will allow the system to Reboot. On reboot, at the C:\_ prompt (flashing cursor), type V4 and press Enter. The BIOS update program will run and automatically step through the update process. At the end of the update you will see a green box telling you to reboot the PC Remove the USB key and switch off the system. Power the system back on. Again boot into BIOS Setup by pressing <F2> repeatedly as the power comes on. On the BIOS screen, set to boot from hard disk. Use cursor keys to go to main menu Cursor down to set the clock for correct time and date Cursor down to system configuration features press enter Ensure legacy USB support is now disabled (to prevent accidental starting of the mixer from a bootable key) Press <F10> to Save and Exit to allow to reboot. Note: Difference in BIOS boot sequence V4 now starts the engine as part of the BIOS sequence, for extra audio recovery speed. Pressing F2 will not stop the engine boot sequence, which will appear on the screen in a similar manner to V3, but the system will enter the BIOS pages AFTER it has attempted to start the engine. This is a significant difference to V3 that operators should be aware of! For reference only, the BIOS update key can be created as follows : Create bootable USB key. This must be created using Win95, 88SE, ME or similar - i.e. no High Memory (himem.sys) Copy files from BIOS Upgrade zipped file to USB key. These files are: V4.BAT The upgrade batch file. PHLASH16.EXE Phoenix BIOS update utility. DGC405T.P16 Version 4 BIOS Image. These steps can be ignored if you already have a DiGiCo Version 4 BIOS upgrade key.

TN185 Page of 12 Final setup and test The mixer should now boot correctly and can be briefly checked. Complete setup of the mixer system should not carried out yet. Note the Windows application takes longer to boot than V1. However the audio recovery is slightly quicker in the event of a problem such as power interruption. Note also multiple expander system screens may not work. Quit mixer to windows. You will note the Windows desk top is replaced by a compact tool bar. Explorer is under files and tools. The new V4 system uses partitioned drives. This means explorer will show 2 drives C:\ D: the USB key will be E:\ if used. Note that the first drive contain a complete set of DS00 and OS folders and second drive contain about 12 files. These are the boot partitions of the main drive and allow the system to boot extremely quickly in the event of an emergency restart. In a twin drive option system explorer will show 4 drives C:\ D:\ E:\ F:\ the USB key will be G:\ if used. In this case 2 drives will be large and 2 will be small. If not supplied ready set up (and marked as main/primary and spare/secondary) Rename the operating drives as MAIN and SPARE in that order. Rename the boot drives as BOOTMAIN and BOOTSPARE in that order. Do this NOW. Otherwise total confusion will be ensured in the future! Write Caching, VERY IMPORTANT: Write Caching must be disabled on any drive connected to the system to ensure correct operation of the console. An entry is made to the registry against each Drive s unique ID so if a drive is replaced or cloned or added, you MUST ensure this procedure is reapplied. From the Files and Tools (Explorer) window, right click on the Main drive and select Properties. Then select the Hardware tab and you will then see the 2 drives listed. Select the first drive, click the Properties button and then select the Policies tab. Pic 15. Local Disk Properties. If the Enable write caching on the disk option is ticked then untick it. If the option is greyed out then leave it as it is. OK this window and then repeat the procedure for the second disk if applicable. When each drive has been checked, click OK to return to the Files and Tools Window.

TN185 Page of 12 Video display setup Click on tools and files button Select and click on Displays Layout This open the windows display properties page. Setup the multiple graphics. This as for V1 and detailed in TN 168A but summarised here Monitors MUST be in order shown in picture, including unused monitors. Enable expander monitors as required only, however initially you have to enable a monitor in order to move it. Disable it after it is in the correct position and if it not to be used. Note mixer shipped with no or one expander will only have 4 screens shown (only 1 hardware graphics adapter). Those shipped with 2 or more expanders will show 8 screen shown (and 2 hardware graphics adapters). For dual drive mixer change the boot order and repeat the video setup for the second drive OS, test and then revert back to the primary drive boot.

TN185 Page of 12 Mixer set up In Explorer, copy any sessions to the projects folder and sockets files into the DS00 folder from the user s memory key. Click Configure in the new tool bar, to open the hardware configuration page, Select sockets files, hardware options etc. etc. Note certain paid-for options such as FX will require re-enabling with factory passwords. Click on the Tools button, Click on Calibrate and recalibrate the touch screens and panners (see TN 122), as the mixer screen data was saved on the old drives. Note the screens are selected and calibrated individually, not as a group as in V1. The new drives usually work with small errors from a default set of values. Restart the mixer and do a full function check of the system, including overview screen if possible, running the normal software and session files and confirm operations. Note there a separate user manual V4 supplement. For dual drive mixers quit to windows and boot from DS00 on drive D:\. Repeat the setup, test and then quit. Note there a separate user manual V4 supplement. This can be downloaded from the support area of Note regarding re-use of V1 sessions in V4 This is possible but the session must be converted to V4 format. Please refer to the release notes for the V4 version as supplied with the hardware upgrade kit, included with this note. At the time of this edit release July 08, this is V Upgrading Racks. Whilst revised code in the racks is not required to operate with v4, it is good practice to upgrade the code in the racks at the same time as the mixer to ensure they can support the current range of input and output modules. Having confirmed the mixer is operating correctly, upgrade the racks according to the procedure detailed in TN173A ASSOCIATED TECHNICAL NOTES TN 180 Modification of early issue Blue Chip ETX PC card TN 173A Reprogramming of rack firmware TN 168A Multiple Display setup
