1 Dynalec MSIC (Monitor Speaker I/F Circuit) ( ) User s Manual Rev 27FEB02
2 GENERAL This manual contains information concerning a description of operation for the Dynalec Monitor Speaker Interface Circuit, MSIC. The MSIC uses the resources of the DEFINITY ECS to provide the control of connections between various voice sources, such as radio channels and remotely located monitor speakers. The MSIC also provides dial access to legacy shipboard MC announcing systems such as the 1MC system. The MSIC is constructed using a TN printed wiring board format and plugs directly into a miscellaneous port board slot of a DEFINITY ECS carrier. Power to operate the MSIC board is provided by the DEFINITY ECS carrier. The MSIC board contains the necessary circuitry to control the connection of six analog voice sources to six external monitor speakers. Each of the six circuits requires interconnection to two analog station lines in the DEFINITY ECS and to one external monitor speaker. The sixth circuit on the MSIC board is equipped with a set of relay contacts for use with MC announcing systems requiring a push-to-talk (PTT) contact closure. Although the MSIC board is mounted in a DEFINITY ECS carrier, the MSIC board operates without interaction with the DEFINITY ECS TDM/LAN busses or system software. This means that the board will not be recognized by the DEFINITY ECS system and will appear as a vacant slot for DEFINITY ECS system administration purposes. The interfaces to the MSIC appear in the main cross-connect wiring field via the existing standard 25 pair cabling between the DEFINITY ECS carrier slot and the main cross connect wiring field. THEORY OF OPERATION FOR SPEAKER CONTROL APPLICATIONS The new TN format MSIC printed wiring board controls up to six monitor speakers. Each radio monitor speaker interface is paired up with two DEFINITY ECS analog station lines. The first line, referred to as Line A, is used to establish and hold a connection via the DEFINITY ECS between a voice source (such as a radio frequency) and a remote monitor speaker. The second line, referred to as Line B, is used to force the DEFINITY ECS to disconnect the voice source from the speaker connected to Line A. Operationally, the MSIC is an incoming only circuit which can not originate a call to the DEFINITY ECS. The MSIC detects an incoming call from station Line A in the DEFINITY ECS and responds by placing a loop closure across the tip and ring conductors of that line. This operation is similar to that of an auto-answer speakerphone. No talk battery is provided on the pair connecting to the monitor speaker. FIGURE 1 shows a functional block diagram of MSIC and its functional relationship to the DEFINITY ECS. Monitor speakers can be controlled from any telephone set (with the proper class of service) within the DEFINITY ECS system. To activate a monitor speaker, a controlling station dials the telephone number or trunk access code of a voice source to be monitored, such as a meet-me conference in a DCSS conference bridge. The controlling station then uses the DEFINITY ECS conference feature to establish a three-way conference between itself, the voice source to be monitored and the desired monitor speaker connected to Line A. The controlling station then disconnects from the conference, leaving the voice source connected to the monitor speaker via Line A in the MSIC.
3 Disconnect Dual Line Operation To initiate a disconnect of the monitor speaker from the voice source, the controlling station dials the number of station Line B connected to the MSIC circuit. The MSIC circuitry detects ringing on Line B from the DEFINITY ECS and responds by placing a loop closure across the tip and ring conductors of that line. During the off-hook period, the MSIC transmits a short confirmation tone to the controlling station on Line B and opens the loop toward the DEFINITY ECS on Line A. The DEFINITY ECS responds to the loss of loop current in Line A by removing the connection between the voice source and the monitor speaker attached to Line A. At the conclusion of this process, both lines A and B are in the idle (on-hook) condition. Disconnect - Single Line Operation An alternate means of disconnecting a monitor speaker from a voice source is through the use of the forward disconnect feature built into the DEFINITY ECS. A forward disconnect is defined as the removal of talk battery by the DEFINITY ECS from the tip/ring conductors of a line for a period of approximately 600 milliseconds. The removal of the battery source results in the momentary loss of loop current to that line. The single line disconnect scheme is used only for those cases where the controlling station remains in the call and retains supervisory control of Line A through the DEFINITY ECS. For example, the controlling station places a call directly to a monitor speaker (or to an announcing system) via Line A in a MSIC circuit (see FIGURE 2). At the conclusion of the announcement, the controlling station disconnects from the call. The DEFINITY ECS detects the disconnection of the controlling station and issues a forward disconnect signal toward Line A in the MSIC (which is connected to the speaker or announcing system). The MSIC circuitry connected to Line A detects the 600 millisecond loss of loop current and responds by placing the Line A interface back in the on-hook condition. The MSIC also opens the transmission path from Line A to the speaker or announcing system and reconnects the idle circuit termination toward the speaker. FRONT PANEL INDICATIONS Upon power-up, the LED s on the front panel of the MSIC go through a test sequence in which each LED is illuminated briefly to confirm proper operation. After this power-up sequence, the bottom-most LED blinks periodically to indicate proper operation of the system controller. The 6 upper LED s represent each of the six A lines that the MSIC can interface with. If an LED is illuminated, the corresponding A line is in the off-hook condition and is connected to some remote audio source. The upper-most LED represents A line 1 and the LED which is second from the bottom represents A line 6. The corresponding LED will be extinguished when the corresponding A line is returned to the on-hook condition (using one of the two disconnect methods described above). 1MC ANNOUNCING SYSTEM CONTROL The last circuit (line 6) on the MSIC board may be used for either monitor speaker control applications or as an interface between the DEFINITY ECS and a 1MC announcing system. The last circuit differs from the other circuits on the MSIC board in that the last circuit is equipped with a relay contact for use with announcing systems requiring a PTT contact closure. This relay is operated while Line A of the last circuit on the MSIC board is in the off-hook condition. For 1MC applications, only the Line A is connected to the DEFINITY. Line B remains unterminated. Line A is activated and cut through as described above. The PTT relay in the MSIC operates while Line A is in the off-hook condition. The release sequence for Line A is initiated when the MSIC receives a forward disconnect signal from the DEFINITY ECS as described above.
4 CIRCUIT VOLUME CONTROL The MSIC has a gain from each A Line to its associated monitor speaker which is adjustable to one of 8 different levels. There are 6 DIP-switches along the top edge of the board labeled S1-S6. Each one of these 3-position DIPswitches corresponds to an A Line. The table below illustrates the 8 different volume levels which can be obtained by adjusting the DIP-switch settings. Note that a 0 refers to a DIP-switch in the DOWN position and a 1 refers to a DIP-switch in the UP position. The left-most DIP-switch also corresponds to the left-most digit in the table. TABLE 1 DIP-switch Setting Line to Monitor Speaker Gain Monitor Speaker Level dB 8.7mVrms dB 13.8mVrms dB 43.6mVrms 011 0dB 138mVrms dB 245mVrms dB 436mVrms dB 775mVrms dB 1.38Vrms
