2 1.0 INTRODUCTION LM750 RECORDING VOLTMETER W ITH DISPLAY The Broy Model LM750 is an electronic battery-powered instrument used to measure and record voltages up to 750 Vac. The voltage is digitized and recorded by the LM750. The recorded data is downloaded into a computer and may then be processed, viewed and plotted for purposes such as feeder regulation studies, planning, monitoring, or troubleshooting. Contacts: Logmaste r@broy.com Toll free Fax Web LM750 OPERATION 2.1 Description of Recording Methods 1.1 Energraf EG2000V Data Presentation Software EG2000V is available FREE on request to users of the LM750 recording voltmeter. Please or fax your name, location, and shipping address to us, and we will promptly send a free copy of EG2000V on a CD-ROM. The LM750 samples the voltage applied to its inputs once per second as timed by an internal clock. These samples are used to calculate the average, maximum, and minimum voltage as required over the duration of a user-selected time period. One of three RECORDING INTERVAL time periods can be selected: 1, 5 or 15 minutes. The information that is stored in memory at the end of each interval depends on which Data Mode is selected: AVERAGE or AVERAGE/MIN/MAX. In AVERAGE Data Mode the stored data is the average of the one-second samples taken during the interval. In AVERAGE/MIN/MAX Data Mode the maximum and the minimum of the samples as well as the average is stored. The data is stored in memory in one of two mann ers: CONTINUOUS or STOP. In CONTINUOUS Memory Mode when the memory is filled newly recorded data displaces e oldest. When the data is transferred to the computer, the recorder's entire memory contents are transferred. In STOP Memory Mode the LM750 stores data until the ime in the recorder is preserved. The time, date and data remain until the memory contents are transferred to a computer and the recorder is reinitialized. Only the data that has been recorded since the previous initialization will be transferred resulting in shorter data transfers and smaller data files than for Cont inuous Mode recording. The computer clock will determine the time and date to be used during initialization. Memory mode, recording interval duration, and data modes may be selected when the LM750 is initialized from the computer software, or later in the field, by using the front panel switches (see 2.4). It is important to clear the memory before using the recorder; this is done automatically during computer Initialization, or manually at turn-on in the field, by using the Program and DISPLAY buttons. The operational modes may be checked at any time using the DISPLAY button (see 2.4). 2.2 Range and Power Switches These switches are located under the small plastic plug and operated by sliding the small white tabs left or right to set. To use the LM750, set the power switch ON, select the range wanted, connect the LMI-1 Interface Adapter (sect 2.5), and run the Initiali zation step from the computer software which you are using. When the instrument is first turned on, the memory will contain random data (garbage); this must be cleared before using (section 3.2.5). When swi tched ON the instrument defaults to the following Modes which may be displayed by pressing the DISPLAY button. Default Mode s: E00 Elapsed time zero P15 Recording interval fifteen minute, continuous HL Data mode Min/Max/Avg Memory status not cleared 2.3 Installing and Removing the LM750 Only qualified persons should install and remove the LM750 on electrical circuits. When working on live equipment normal safety precautions are to be taken that are appropriate for the voltage level involved. Two sets of test leads with safety shrouded connectors are supplied. One set is a clip-on high voltage type, with in-line High Rupturing Capacity (HRC) fuses. The other consists of a standard 120V line cord. Repla cement leads are available from Broy Engineering. ALWAYS INSTALL THE LEADS IN THE LM750 BEFO RE CONNECTING TO THE LOAD VOLTAGE As part of the installation and removal procedure, the location and serial number of the LM750 as well as the installation and removal times should be noted since these may be useful during data processing. date and emory is full. When all the memory is filled no more data is stored and the 2.4 Using the Display The LM750 has a 4-digit display which can be activated by pressing the membrane switch area on the front panel la belled "DISPLAY". If the DISPLAY button has not 1 10/30/02 2

3 previously been pressed for at least 16 seconds, the recorder display will step through the present setup in the following order and format: ELAPSED TIME AND MEMORY STATUS Enn. - nn minutes into programmed interval memory full Enn. " memory partial RECORDING INTERVAL AND RECORDING MODE Pmm. - mm minutes recording interval (01,05,15) stop mode Pmm. " continuous mode DATA MODE -- mode Average HL " High/ Low/aver age After these three consecutive indications the LM750 will display the present voltage input. 2.5 Using the LMI-1 Desktop Computer Interface The LMI-1 Interface Adapter has a 9-socket pin (Female) D-type connecter, which should be conne cted to serial port COM1 or COM2 of a DOS-type computer. If necessary, a 9 pin to 25 pin adapter may be used. Power is supplied to the interface adapter from the power adapter supplied with the interface. Connection to the LM750 instrument is through the 6-pin circular connector at the end of the case by removing the large red plastic plug and inserting the interface connector. The FUNCTION switch on the interface should be at "STANDBY" when t he conne ction is made. The LO BATTERY indicator light will turn OFF if the battery in the LM750 is satisfactory for further use. LMI-2 Portable Battery Powered Computer Interface The LMI-2 is powered by an internal 9V battery. Connecting the round connector to your LM750 will activate data transfer and provide the recorder battery check. The battery LED will light if the reorders battery is ok for further use. Your software may refer to a Standby/Transfer switch, the LMI-2 does not have one. Disconnected, the LMI-2 is in Standby, upon connection, data transfer will begin and the transfer LED will light. 2.6 Transferring and Processing LM750 Data Data may be output fr om the LM750 is down loaded to a comput er by means of the LMI- 1 adapter. The output, coded in ASCII, consists of a header containing the serial number (the number stamped on the nameplate) and the recorder's time and date followed by the recorded voltage data with newest data first. Data fil es are stored on the hard drive under file names chosen by the user; the default file extension is.dat. 3.0 FIELD INITIALIZATION 3.1 Summary The LM750 is initialized at the start of a recording session by either the membrane switches on the front panel or by using the computer. The LM750 has four parameters that can be s et in the field as wel l as the capa bility of zeroing the da ta memory : * memory mode * recording interval * data mode * el aps ed t ime (pa nel swi tches only) These parameters should not be changed until the recorded data has been transferred to the computer. Available are two memory Modes, Stop or Continuous, three Recording Intervals of 1, 5, or 15 minutes, and two Data Modes, Average or Average/Minimum/Maximum Initialization Procedure THE "PROGRAM" BUTTON MUST BE HELD DOWN THROUGHOUT THESE PROCEDURES. If it is released, the procedure will be terminated. To stop the programming process after any step, simply release the PROGRAM button. A description of all displayed symbols may be found in Section Setting Recording Interval and Mode To program the recording interval and mode, hold the PROGRAM button, press and release the DISPLAY button once. The display will show "888.8" indefinitely. Press and hold the DISPLAY button a second time; the present setting will be displayed for one second. After one second, the recorder will cycle through the available modes, (P01. P05. P15. P01.- P05.- P15.-). To select a mode, release the DISP LAY button when the desired mode is shown. If necessary, continue t o hold the DISPLAY button; the LM750 continues to cycle through the possible modes until DISPLAY is released. The selected mode will be displayed as long as the PROGRAM button is held. LMI-1 Computer Interface LMI-2 Computer Interface Setting Elapsed Time When the instrument is switched ON the internal clock will start up with a time of 00:00. In the one minute interval mode, Elapsed Time is not applicable and the value will be zero; the setti ng option will not be available. When using 5 or 15 minute interval mode, 3 10/30/02 4

4 the clock time may be adjusted so that so that data recording takes place on "even" times of 5 or 15 minutes in real time; for example, 10:05 or 13:45. This is done by telling the clock the number of minutes passed since the last standard recording time by entering what is called Elapsed Time. For example, while using a recordin g interval of 15 minutes, with an actual startup time of 10:06, 6 minutes have passed since the last standard recording time and the Elapsed Time will thus be 6 minutes. It should be noted that only the minutes will be affected. The Elapsed Time value may be set using the buttons on the front panel as follows. Press and hold the PROGRAM button; at the same time press and release the DISPLAY button; the display will show "888.8". Now press and release the DISPLAY button a second time, the selected recording interval and mode will be displayed. Press and hold the DISPLAY button again and the existing elapsed time setting will be displayed; the display will then begin cycling through all the possible values of E00 through E05 or E15, depending on the recording interval. When the desired value is shown, release the DISP LAY button and the selected Elapsed Time will be set to the last value shown. To use the default setting of zero minutes do not hold the DISPLAY button; release it immediately Setting Data Mode To program DATA MODE; hold the PROGRAM button, press and release the DISPLAY button three times. Now press and hold the DISPLAY button a fourth time, the display will show t he current setting either "--." or "HL.". The display will then begin to alternate between the two modes. Release the DISPLAY button when the des ired mode is shown, the se lected mode w ill then remai n on the di spl ay Clearing Data Memory To zero the data memory; hold the PROGRAM button, press the DISPLAY button four times. Now press and hold the DISPLAY button a fifth time, the display will show "---.- ". Continue holding the DISPLAY button until the display shows "222.2". The memory has now been zeroed. The recorder will then continue into a parameter check/display mode Checking Parameter Settings At lower temperatures, battery life is reduced. The useful life at -20C will be about 7 weeks, with a reserve of about 2 weeks. Extremely low temperatures approaching -40C will have a life of about 4 to 5 weeks and it is recommended that new batteries be installed whenever recordings are to be made under these conditions. To install or change the batteries in the recorder, remove t he cover from the recorder and insert the new batteries into the holders provided. Replace the cover carefully so as not to pinch the wires. Following battery replacement or removal the recorders' date must be reset using the initialization procedure. 5.0 TROUBLESHO OTING 5.1 High or Low Readings Voltage readings of five times the expected amount. This may be corrected by making sure the range is set to 0-200V, pressing and holding the DISPLAY button until "00.0" is displayed, and repeating the data transfer (Sec 2.6). Voltage readings of one fifth the expected amount. This may be corrected by making sure the range is set to 0-750V, pressing and holding the DISPLAY button until "00." is displayed, and repeating the download. 5.2 Random Readings Downloads containing large numbers of random values, which may be very high in value, beyond the normal maximum voltage range. Probable cause is failing to clear the memory after swi tching the un it ON. Soft war e initialization cl ears the me mory aut omatically; field start-up requires manual clearing using the front panel switch. 5.3 Technical Assistance Technical assistance is available via telephone, , and our website: Logmaster@broy.com or To check the chosen parameter settings, press and release the DISPLAY button five times. The recorder will then step through the selected settings in the order: Pnn,Emm,HL, or Pnn,Emm,-- etc. as long as the PROGRAM button is held. 4.0 BATTERY MAINTENANCE The LM750 operates from two 9V alkaline batteries. At a temperature of 20C, new batteries should operate about 16 weeks before the Computer Interface LED indicates "lo bat tery" by lighting dur ing download. At this indication, the b atteries have ab out 21 d ays of reserve remaining. It is not necessary for the interface to be connected to the computer to test the batteries. Once "l o battery" is indicated, the ba tteries ha ve less than 21 d ays of life left, and should be replaced. Both batteries should be replaced together. 5 10/30/02 6
