10 Control Centre Automation Netcontrol SCADA systems are designed for control rooms within energy production, transmission and distribution and energy-intensive manufacturing. We pack in a huge range of features and functions, and combine multiple tasks, and processes into a single system. The result is a cost-effective and streamlined system that simplifies operations and improves control. Our SCADA systems allow you to supervise and control every connected point on the network, to get data from all devices on the system, and to communicate between information systems both inside and outside the enterprise. You can see what is happening across your entire network in real-time through the control room interface, with all information being saved in a central data warehouse. This gives you sound data and analysis for both critical operations and business decisions. Each SCADA system is tailored so it meets the immediate needs of the individual enterprises and is ready to adapt to future changes. Systems are modular, scalable from single up to multi-site clusters, and compatible with both established and emerging technologies. Resilience is built-in to meet your specifications, with features including distributed architecture, built-in redundancy and remote back up. Security is covered by network segmentation/firewalls, white listing and VPN authentication with encryption. Systems are straightforward to use and carefully designed to make configuration and development both faster and easier. Interfaces are intuitive, with software wizards to speed up installation. There is a comprehensive library of symbol sets for process objects, which propagates changes throughout the system. Operators can set their own time zone and language. Including elements of both distribution and energy management systems (DMS/EMS), a Netcontrol SCADA system is a good option for any utility not requiring an EMS or looking to replace the SCADA element of an existing EMS. It can also replace a series of independently controlled local SCADA stations such as might be found in boiler stations in a district heating system. For totally integrated operations, the system connects to both manufacturing execution and enterprise resource planning systems. Products: Distributed SCADA systems. Case Study Netcontrol have integrated large amounts of distributed SCADA systems. We have equipped around 200 hydropower stations, each integrated and equipped with our Netcon 500 and other RTU solutions. Our integration expands largely to allow customers to produce real-time production control and coordination between hydropower stations with two master stations backing each other up. Our redundant Netcon All-IP network was created to connecting each plant to be master station using a combination of satellite, fibre, copper and data radio communication. Security measures were fundamentally important, so we introduced an ultra high cyber security package with application level. The SCADA system spanned over 64 distributed server computers, with some operating in a partly virtual environment. The Netcon 3000 system has met all criteria and requirements we had. Especially during the very large disturbances caused by the heavy snowstorm in January, the system performance was excellent. 11 Substation Automation In total we got more than 10 offers. Netcontrol offered the best solution, it was technically the best solution, it met all our requirements and it had the best life cycle costs. Netcon 500 is a very compact solution with excellent built-in communication capabilities. Netcontrol also developed new functionality in a very short time Project Manager, Vattenfall Verkko Oy Netcontrol substation automation products replace the traditional single protocol RTU with a complete substation gateway controller and outstation. Our solution includes all features, for example RTU functionality, protocol converter, communication gateway, information security and programmable logic controller functionality, in one single box. It talks to multiple systems with multiple protocols downstream and multiple IEDs at the plant. With less need for manual operations and site visits, your teams are free to concentrate on getting the most out of your network. Options are available for both primary and larger secondary substations, and devices integrate comfortably with legacy systems. Much more than an RTU, a Netcontrol gateway controller becomes the brains of the substation. Communicating via up to 50 protocols and with scalable IO modules (up to 10,000 input/output points in a single unit), it handles remote and local control of switchgear, detects and tracks faults, and monitors an extensive range of supply and quality measurements. It also pulls in data from outside the electricity supply, including CCTV and telephone information and it prioritizes the data communication according to your needs. Whether a circuit breaker has tripped or someone has accessed the site, you ll know. Both retrofit and new installations are straightforward, and can typically be completed in a single day. Products can interface with existing wiring, and ready-to-use multiple configuration options are available through preset templates. All controllers provide full support for the IEC61850 standard and bring connected IEC61850 devices on line instantly. And as Netcontrol is vendor independent, our products have been tested to seamlessly work with IEC61850 implementations of a large number of vendor s equipment. Engineers find systems simple to learn and use. The central database can be accessed locally via a user-friendly web-based interface, and the configuration utility runs through Windows, making it quick and easy to add new protocols and connectivity options. The builtin IEC Programmable Logic Controller can be used for local automation functions. Security is taken care of with an integral VPN and firewall inside each unit. This removes the vulnerabilities associated with devices that have to connect to external security software. Breakdowns are rare, because we design and build products to withstand the high electric and magnetic interference typically found in substations. Products: Substation gateway controllers Case Study Netcontrol have provided thousands of Netcon 500 RTU solutions across the globe to support communication functions in the Substation Automation areas of the smart grid, with a variety of demands from different industries. Our RTU solutions have provided flexible and reliable control of major city tram networks in the Nordic region, supplying a secure solution to keep the population moving. Quote? You can control the network and network assets even beyond the transformer, at small switching stations. For us it is important to offer you simply more than the products. Distribution automation products are often located in rural areas and the distribution automation system typically covers a large geographical area. We make sure that the system works, that the communication works to satisfaction and that the field devices connect to the control centre according to your needs. Case Study Over the past few years, Netcontrol has supplied around 6500 control points to Western Power Distribution network, making them the UK s market leader in energy networks according to the regulator for quality and supply. Solutions delivered to WPD include our, SCADA ready NME 200 pole mounted actuators, complete with our System NM data radios and our Ring Main Unit compatible actuator, NMS 100, which has been used extensively on the network for both ground and pole mounted applications and our PDR data radios. Recording real-time data in the field and sending it back, our range works in unearthed, solidly-earthed and compensated networks and includes equipment for both overhead and groundmounted assets. Devices are designed and tested to function reliably in extreme and harsh conditions. Thanks to readymade configurations and templates plus a user-friendly web based interface, installation is quick and easy. Built-in firewalls and VPN tunnel encryption make data secure, whilst remote access control data improves safety by telling you whether people are in the premises or doors are open. Netcon Application Manager software allows engineers to manage systems centrally, so that configuration changes and updates are simple and straightforward. Products are modular and customizable, integrating all necessary functions in a single compact unit. Retrofit with older switchgear is straightforward, because we design all our equipment to be vendor independent. And because we use only stable technologies, there is no risk of products becoming outdated within their operational lifetime. Quantities measured include voltage, current, switch status, temperature, etc. Harmonic analysis adds an extra vital ingredient, and bi-directional data on faults and disturbances tells you both where a fault is and which way it s going. With precise and accurate real time data, you achieve two key outcomes: First, you improve consistency and quality of supply to customers, reducing both the risk of disruption to service and breakdown of customer equipment. That in turn reduces any risk of fines being imposed by regulators. You can forecast and reduce service level disturbances and complaints, and outages affect fewer people, because you can isolate relevant sectors centrally rather than cutting off every customer downstream of a fault. Outages are also shorter, because more accurate fault location means engineers can get to the root of the problem faster. 13 Utility Communication Netcontrol s communications specialists install integrated communications networks that enable customers to get the most from their investment in RTUs and associated automation equipment. We manufacture our own range of digital data radios specifically designed for longrange data transmission within distribution automation systems. We also supply and install a wide range of equipment from other manufacturers, in order to get the best results for every individual network. Rather than being tied to our own or any other single product range, we find the media that will best provide the comprehensive, reliable and secure data your automation equipment needs if it is to work to its full potential. Netcontrol data radios Developed to meet the needs of electricity networks, Netcontrol s data radios offer a strong set of features that make them a sound choice for many customers. They have a greater range than other wireless devices, providing area coverage of up to 2,000km2 or more using repeaters. Any radio can be configured to fit any application, so there is no need to buy separate ones or keep multiple types as spares. Unique radio identities and a high level of encryption mean no-one else can listen in or interfere. The 40MHz tuning range makes it easy to change frequency, versatile data interfaces mean you can mix systems as needed, and configurable collision avoidance optimises channel usage and minimises data turn around times. Netcon ALL-IP architecture Netcontrol ALL-IP concept is a new way to build utility communications networks. Broadband Netcon ALL-IP connects the various substations and distribution automation products at the field to the centralised control room/centres. Powered by our in house-developed library of over 50 protocols, Netcon ALL-IP interconnects current and legacy automation products from both Netcontrol and other manufacturers with the modern IT infrastructure. As a result, you can continue to use older equipment until the end of its life cycle. In addition to control traffic automation, we also integrate various other traffic formats previously run in dedicated, costly networks with common IP based networks. Typical applications are voice-over-ip (VOIP), video surveillance (CCTV), and various maintenance and measurements software tools. This produces a common, coherent network platform that gives considerable savings throughout the lifetime of the network. A cornerstone of our Utility Networking solutions and everything we do is cyber security. Our Netcon ALL-IP products, complemented by carefully-selected third party products, have built-in cyber security including firewalls, VPN tunnelling with encryption and user authentication. Products: Digital radio modems Concentrators Gateway servers Supervisory radio networks Case Study Over the past decade, Scottish Power Energy Networks (SPEN) has been able to provide their customers with an optimum long range data communication package. At the heart of this system is Netcontrol s System NM communication range. The system allowed SPEN to communication from the gateway to the remote locations, integrated into their networks using existing equipment to effectively manage and deliver critical information between reclosers and switches back to the central control centre SCADA system. In addition to SPEN, Netcontrol have supplied large scale data communication projects in the Middle East, with our gateways servers and RTU s from our Substation and Distribution Automation products.

14 Quality: The way we work Rather than buying in ready-made circuits to speed up time to markets and production, we create custom designs around stable and proven technologies, and re-use our own common technologies across our product platforms. This way, our solutions stay coherent and you don t get equipment made with components that don t last or with parts you can t replace because they were part of a single production run. Testing We test rigorously during the product manufacturing process. Even thousands of individual tests on each card, three areas of test coverage, including a visual PCB track validation (point to point PCB continuity) with automatic visual inspection for component type, placement and solder quality check. The second area incorporates a burn-in process, consisting of 3 hours cold/ 3 hours hot cycle. The final area uses automatic test systems to fully verify the circuit PCB and functionality before and after the burnin process, plus final functional test and calibration (ATE). Test data comes through to our own central server, not just to the manufacturing plant systems. We watch it closely and investigate any issues arising. We run duplicate production facilities and duplicate supply chains. That means we never need to compromise on standards either in production or supply. We own all the testing equipment, of which there are three identical copies, one at each factory and one on our own premises. That puts us in total control, and means there is no possibility of you ever receiving an untested product. Deliveries We keep large quantities of stock. Even though that means tying up working capital, we prefer to do this than to risk the inferior quality that might result if we put the manufacturing plants under pressure to produce cards quickly at short notice. We also know that good lead times are more important to customers than stock turn ratios. We and our sub-contractors adhere to strict industry standards in everything we do. Our operations are backed up by ISO9001:2008 and ISO14001:2004 accredited systems, covering our office locations across Europe. Our products are made for harsh conditions. 15 Training and support Through in-depth training for your engineers, we put you in control of your own system. You are able to manage updates and reconfigurations without paying additional costs or waiting to get work done. Training takes place either at your own site, or at a training centre at the Netcontrol base most convenient for your team. At every stage, support and advice is easy to access.
