4 1. INTRODUCTION 1.1 Description The MM35 is a general purpose, autoranging digital multimeter with selectable manual ranging. Functions include DC & AC voltage, DC & AC current, resistance, continuity & diode test. The 10A current range is separately fused and has its own test lead connection A different connection socket is used for the remaining current measurements. Voltage and resistance readings are made with the test leads in the VΩ and COM sockets. A central rotary switch is used for manual selection of the required function and the meter autoranges until the optimum reading resolution occurs. 1.2 Unpacking & Inspection Before unpacking the MM35, examine the shipping carton for any sign of damage. Unpack and inspect the MM35 for any sign of damage. If there is any damage then consult the supplier immediately. 1.3 Battery Installation Refer to section 4.2 for battery installation instructions. Manual ranging may be selected using the RANGE button and a single short press will maintain the range currently selected. Successive short pushes of this button will cause the MM35 to RANGE UP, selecting the next highest range with each press. A long press will return the meter to AUTORANGE mode. 3.3 HOLD button The current reading on the display may be frozen by pressing the HOLD button. A further press will return the meter to its normal continuous reading mode. 3.4 DC/AC button (A) This button is used to toggle between AC and DC for current measurements. 3.5 Audible Continuity/Diode button ( ) Pressing this button will make the meter alternate between the continuity and diode test functions. 3.6 Voltage measurement 1. Connect the red test lead to the "VΩ" socket, and the black lead to the "COM" 2. Select either DC (V ) or AC (V~) voltage function using the rotary switch. 3. Connect the test probes to the unit under test and the meter will autorange until the best range is selected and a reading is displayed. 4. In the DC function a "-" is displayed for negative readings. 3.7 Current measurement 1. Select one of the three current functions using the rotary switch and use button A ( / ) to choose either DC or AC. The appropriate symbol appears at the left hand side of the display. 2. When measuring less than 320mA, connect the red test lead to the µa/ma socket, and the black lead to the COM 3. For current above 320mA, the red lead should be connected to the 10A 4 9
5 However, electrical noise or intense electromagnetic fields in the vicinity of the equipment may disturb the measurement circuit. Measurement instruments will also respond to unwanted signals that may be present. Users should exercise care and take appropriate precautions to avoid misleading results in the presence of electromagnetic interference. 3. OPERATION 3.1. Precautions Warning: Before using the instrument, read the Safety Information Section, and examine it for damage or contamination (excessive dirt, grease, etc.). Check the test leads for any evidence of cracked or frayed insulation. If any abnormal conditions exist, do not use the meter. Warning: When using probes, keep your fingers behind the guards. Warning: Measuring voltages which exceed the limits of the meter may damage it and expose the operator to a shock hazard. Always work within the meter voltage limits indicated on it's front panel. Warning: Never ground yourself when taking electrical measurements. Do not touch exposed metal pipes, outlets, fixtures etc. which may be at ground potential. Keep your body insulated by wearing dry clothing, rubber shoes or stand on a rubber mat, or other suitable material. 3.2 Range selection When the function (for example, AC Volts) has been selected and a signal is present, the MM35 will autorange until the most suitable range has been selected.
