2 ABSTRACT In the fast developing world, height of the buildings increased tremendously and the lift has become more of a necessary rather than luxury. When the number of floor increased the control mechanism required for the lift will become more complex. Programmable Logic Controllers are widely accepted industrial control device. With the growth in technology PLCs are now capable of advanced data manipulations, communications benefits of using PLC in industries are the PLC is a hardened industrial computer designed to withstand the harsh factory environment,. reusable they contain a changeable program that eliminators extensive and component changes, offer easy troubleshooting and easy installation and small size. In this system stepper motor is used as driving mechanism. It converts electrical pulses into discrete mechanical movements. The shaft or spindle of a stepper motor rotates in discrete step increments when electrical command pulses are applied to it in the proper sequence. In this project, the system is designed to control the movement of lift between three floors and an HMI unit is set up to add more features for controlling the existing lift unit. 4 6.2 Future Scope of work 29 REFERENCES 30 APPENDIX-1 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Introduction In today s world where sky scrappers are becoming common, lift has become more of a necessary rather than luxury. Lift can be controlled in different ways and different controllers are available. The rapid developments in the microelectronics industry in recent years have now provided the facilities to monitor and control of lift relativity simply and at low cost. The project provides an efficient method of controlling a lift. PLC s one widely accepted as an industrial control devices in many industries such as an automotive, chemical, petroleum, pulp and paper, food, textiles and machinery. In our project a PLC is connected with a PC, which works as a remote programmer device, and a lift which is connected to the PLC through a control module. The signals (the sensor out puts) from the lift are given to the PLC s input and the control signals from the PLC are given to the lift are through the control module. The mechanical parts of the lift includes the pulley system. Top plate, Bushes, Shaft and the lift. Top plate and bottom plate are made up of mild steel. The top & bottom is connected by two shaft and the lift move in between the two shaft with the help pulley and bush arrangement. The existing trainer kit provides control for the movement of lift in three levels It having some disadvantages. Only one request switch is enabled at a time. The system is modified by providing a separate module that can connected to plc to control the lift. The module provides option for selecting one or two request at a time in one direction, Emergency stop. Also provides Upward or downward movement to next floor after emergency stop. A stepper motor can be a good choice whenever controlled movement is required. They can be used to advantage in applications where you need to control rotation angle, speed, position and synchronism. Because of the inherent advantages stepper motors have found their place in many

5 different applications. Some of these include hard disk drives, medical equipment, fax machines, automotive and many more.
