CONTROL ELEMENTS AND CONNECTIONS The control elements located on the front panel of your BLM420 are divided into separate groups with different functions. This design architecture makes using the EUROLIGHT easier, and makes quick understanding of current settings possible. All function keys feature control lights, so that you always have a complete overview of the current settings and selected functions. 2.1 DIM DIM control adjusts the overall brightness of the connected lights. When turned all the way to the right, the brightness is set to maximum (Bright); when turned all the way to the left, the brightness is set to minimum (Dark). 2.2 CONTROL BLACKOUT key simultaneously turns all the lights connected to your BLM420 off. The fadeout is abrupt, i.e. the lights are immediately turned off. If you need a soft fadeout, use the DIM control. To light the stage up again, exit the BLACKOUT mode by pressing the BLACKOUT key again. STATIC mode lets you turn up to two lights on simultaneously, with constant operation (Static Lights). The selection you made most recently is automatically stored as soon as you switch to another mode. This way, you can quickly switch back to STATIC mode during program breaks. Alternatively, you can also control this function using a footswitch (see chapter 2.5). CHASE mode is activated with this key. After selecting a particular program (see chapter 2.4), the lights you have connected will be switched on and off according to the specified sequence (Chase). MUSIC mode lets the selected CHASE program be triggered using the signal connected to the AUDIO IN connector or via the built-in microphone, so that each new beat triggers the next program step. If you use the AUDIO IN connector, the built-in microphone is automatically deactivated. CHANNEL keys (4). When in STATIC mode, here you can light up a maximum of two lights by pressing the desired CHANNEL key. When CHASE and MUSIC modes are active, individual lights are turned off by pressing the desired CHANNEL key(s). Thank you for your cooperation! 6 2.3 MIDI Keeping ENTER pressed for longer than 2 seconds activates the MIDI menu. You can make adjustments to MIDI settings in this menu. SELECT key dials up the desired MIDI function and shows it in the display. This value can be adjusted using the SPEED control in the CHASER section. More complete information about MIDI functions can be found in chapter 4, MIDI. 2.4 CHASER PROGRAM key lets you dial up one of the CHASER programs (1-8). The program you dialed up is shown in the display. Program speed is set using the SPEED control. When SPEED is turned all the way to the left, you can manually trigger the CHASER by pressing the MANUAL key (key LED lights up). MANUAL key manually sets off individual CHASE steps. The speed of CHASE steps can be set by tapping. Tap the MANUAL key at least twice in the rhythm of the music. The CHASE speed is adjusted automatically to the tempo you tapped in (also see ). The built-in microphone used for receiving acoustic signals and triggering the CHASER is located here (also see ). The microphone can only be used when the AUDIO IN connector is not being used. The speed at which CHASER programs run is adjusted using this control, and is shown in the display. If the control is turned all the way to the left (Slow), you can use the MANUAL key to manually trigger CHASE steps (see ). When is turned all the way to the right (Fast), the CHASER runs at the highest speed possible. If the SPEED control is not turned all the way to the left, the CHASER tempo can be set by tapping the MANUAL key. You need to tap the MANUAL key at least twice in the rhythm of the music. Additionally, the SPEED control is also used to select the MIDI channels (also see chapter 4. MIDI ). The DISPLAY indicates the current CHASER program; in MIDI mode, it also shows the MIDI channel or the octave position for the MIDI parameters (see chapter 4. MIDI ). The blinking decimal point indicates the speed that was set on the SPEED control. 2.5 FOOTSWITCH By using a footswitch, e.g. a sustain pedal (not included), you can enable the STATIC and BLACKOUT modes without having to select them directly on the EUROLIGHT itself. This gives you extra flexibility for working with your equipment. If you actuate the footswitch while the STATIC LED is not lit, your BLM420 automatically switches into the BLACKOUT mode (BLACKOUT LED lights up). If you let go of the footswitch, the BLM420 switches back to the most recently used mode. If the STATIC switch is pressed (LED lights up), the STATIC mode is ready to engage. If you now actuate the footswitch, the BLM420 switches to the STATIC mode. Connector for the 1/4 " TRS footswitch jack. You can use a commercially available footswitch, ideally a sustain pedal. 2.6 POWER switch POWER switch turns the BEHRINGER on. The POWER switch should always be set to Off when you connect the unit to the mains. Please note: The POWER switch does not completely disconnect your BLM420 from the mains. If you plan on not using it for prolonged periods of time, please completely unplug it from the mains. The BLM420 has been primarily designed for operation with PAR floodlights; no inductive loads should be connected (e.g. motor-powered or power supply/transformer-powered effects). Fig. 2.2: Front-panel control elements: CHASER, FOOTSWITCH and POWER switch Fig. 2.3: Rear-panel connections: standard socket and BULGIN connectors 6 2. CONTROL ELEMENTS AND CONNECTIONS
7 2.7 Rear panel These are the 4 standard connection sockets used for connecting individual lights. Each connection socket can handle a maximum load of 5 A. If all 4 connection sockets are used, the maximum load may not exceed 16 A. By default, the BLM420 also features 2 BULGIN connectors. Each of those contains 4 channels that are merged into a multicore cable. NOTE: U.S. models do not include BULGIN connectors. A BULGIN connector is made up of 4 channels. The same rule applies here as well: a maximal load of 5 A per channel is allowed. Please keep in mind that the BLM420 can handle a maximum overall load of 16 A (depending on the configuration). Refer to fig for different configuration options. Fig. 2.4: Rear-panel connections MIDI connectors let the BLM420 communicate with a computer or other MIDI equipment (e.g. MIDI keyboards). MIDI data is received via the MIDI IN connector. The MIDI commands your BLM420 receives are passed on to the MIDI THRU connector and forwarded to other MIDI equipment. Please read the chapter dedicated to MIDI (chapter 4). The output of your mixing console (e.g. Tape Out) or another analog signal can be connected to this 1/4" TRS connector in order to trigger the CHASER. You can use both mono and stereo cables. If you are using an adapter, consider the information given in fig. 5.3 in chapter APPLICATION EXAMPLES The can be used in many different situations. This chapter shows several such examples. One of the most common applications is using the BLM420 for DJing events, with solo entertainers or as part of a small stage setup. One possible lighting arrangement is shown in fig Always keep an eye on the maximum load allowed, limited to 16 A. If you are not sure if you have already exceeded this maximum load, simply add up the power ratings of individual lights (in Watts) and divide it with your regional voltage (e.g. 110 V or 230 V). Example: 2 lights, each rated at 575 Watts (e.g. BEHRINGER ULTRAPAR UP1000 with BEHRINGER 575H bulb): 2 x 575 Watts = 1,150 Watts 110 Volts* = 10.5 Amperes (maximum load). * This calculation refers to the mains voltage in North America, Japan and other 110 V countries/regions; to calculate the maximum current value (in Amperes) for other voltages, divide the power rating (in Watts) with the respective Volts value. In general, the connectors can be configured in many different ways, provided that the maximum load of 16 A is not exceeded, and no channel carries more than 5 A. An internal fuse protects your BLM420 and the lights connected to it from overloading. As shown in fig. 3.1, lights can be connected to the connection sockets either individually, or can be bundled using a socalled multicore cable and connected to the BULGIN connectors. Each BULGIN connector consists out of 4 channels. The same rule as before applies here too: the maximum load is limited to 16 A total or 5 A per channel. Please make sure that no more than 2 channels are active at any one time, regardless of their Ampere value. When connecting lights to your BLM420, always make sure not to exceed the total load of 16 A or 5 A per channel. The built-in microphone receives bass signals (mostly the rhythm of the music) and triggers the CHASER, which in turn actuates its program steps (when MUSIC mode is active). This situation is depicted in fig Fig. 3.1: Typical application example with connectivity options 3. APPLICATION EXAMPLES 7
8 Furthermore, the connector of a footswitch (here, a sustain pedal) is also shown in the illustration (also see chapter 2.5). Fig. 3.2: Triggering the CHASER using the built-in microphone and connecting a sustain pedal 4. MIDI The can be controlled using a MIDI keyboard or any another MIDI device. Table 4.1 lists the note commands and functions that can be selected via MIDI. MIDI note Function BLACKOUT STATIC CHASER MUSIC MANUAL CH 1 MIDI note Function PR - CH 2 PR + CH 3 - CH 4 Table 4.1: MIDI note commands and functions Keep the ENTER key pressed for longer than 2 seconds to enter the MIDI menu. SELECT ( ) activates one of the two MIDI functions. The first function controls the selection of MIDI channels: the display shows MIDI channel 1. Use the SPEED control to select a MIDI channel. 16 MIDI channels are available: MIDI channels (i.e. two-digit channels) are rendered in the display as follows: 0. = 10, 1. = 11 and so on. The second function assigns the position of MIDI note On/Off commands to the keyboard. A total of 12 MIDI note commands are available (see table 4.1). The default setting is the MIDI note command 60 (BLACKOUT) assigned to the C 3 key; the display shows 3. (see illustration 4.1). Consequently, the other 11 MIDI note commands are arranged in an ascending order, so that the note command 61 (STATIC) lies on Cis, 62 lies on D, and so on. The last MIDI note command is 71 (CH 4). If you want to move the MIDI note commands one octave down, change the display from 3. to 2. The first MIDI note command BLACKOUT is now the MIDI note 48, STATIC is MIDI note 49, and so on (see illustration 4.1). Octaves can be moved in the range from C 1 to C 6. The display shows 1 for C 1, 2 for C 2, and so on. 4.1 MIDI note commands The function of BLACKOUT (60), STATIC (61), MUSIC (63) and MANUAL (64) MIDI note commands corresponds to the descriptions found in chapter 2, CONTROL ELEMENTS. CHASER (62): Adjust CHASER speed to the rhythm of the music by pressing (at least twice ) note command 64 (MANUAL). Alternatively, you can also adjust CHASER speed via MIDI controller 1, Mod(ulation)Wheel. The DIM function can be controlled through the MIDI controller 7 (volume control on the MIDI keyboard). CH 1/2/3/4 (65/67/69/71): In STATIC mode, each channel is turned on/off by pressing the corresponding keyboard key. If you change to another mode, current settings are stored and are automatically recalled the next time you are in STATIC mode. In CHASE or MUSIC modes, selecting corresponding channels allows you to remove lights from a running program (i.e. lights can be turned off). PR -/PR + (66/68): These functions allow you to select BLM420 programs in an ascending or descending order. 4.2 MIDI connections MIDI connections on the rear panel feature internationally standardized 5-pin DIN connectors. To connect your BLM420 to other MIDI devices, you will need MIDI cables. In general, commercially available cables should be used. MIDI cables should not exceed the length of 15 meters (45 feet). MIDI IN: Used for receiving MIDI control data. MIDI THRU: The unprocessed incoming MIDI signal can be tapped into at the MIDI THRU connector and passed onto other MIDI devices. 5. INSTALLATION 5.1 Rack mounting The BLM420 requires one height unit (1 U) for installation in a 19" rack. Please make sure to leave roughly 10 cm (4") of extra depth for easy access to rear-panel connectors. For rack mounting, please use M6 rack machine screws and nuts. Please make sure the unit is provided with sufficient ventilation, and never mount the BLM420 directly above an amplifier to avoid overheating. 5.2 Audio and light connections You will need several different types of cables for various applications. The following illustrations show how these cables should be laid out. Only use good-quality cables. For operation via the audio input on the back panel of the BLM420, please only use the cable shown in fig Fig. 4.1: Keyboard allocation of MIDI note commands 8 5. INSTALLATION
