4 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Introduction Intent Digital s powerful ControLynx network based on the international EIA-709 LonWorks standard unleashes the unique command and control capabilities required in today s digital world. ControLynx network modules connected to a huge variety of equipment form a rugged control system that links to large scale data networks and the Internet. This network connectivity creates a whole new ability to remotely control devices, monitor status, and diagnose and maintain systems. Integrating ControLynx modules and switch panels makes it easy to setup a flexible, expandable plug and play control system. Versatile ControLynx networks ranging in size from two to thousands of modules will control everything from basic lighting systems to sophisticated digital video facilities. Many of Intent Digital s standard modules permit you to implement all this power without writing any program code. Each ControLynx module also shares a common programmable hardware platform to easily change or create new equipment applications in your facility. They will mount almost anywhere inside equipment racks, under desktops, inside millwork or on a closet wall. In addition to the standard modules listed, special order custom modules are available to provide additional functionality such as driving LCD displays and reading shaft encoders. 4

Please feel free to contact us. 1.3 Warranty For a period of one (1) year from the date of purchase as shown on the sales invoice, INTENT DIGITAL warrants to the original purchaser that the VoteLynx system components, (the Product ) is free from defects in material and workmanship when subjected to normal use and service. If during this one year period, such a defect due to faulty workmanship or materials should occur, the Product will be repaired or replaced (at INTENT DIGITAL's discretion) free of charge after the Product is returned, shipping prepaid, to INTENT DIGITAL. Purchaser s exclusive remedy, and INTENT DIGITAL s sole obligation for any and all causes of action, claims, loss, property damage, personal injury, or liability, resulting from or related to any malfunction, interruption, or loss of use of the Product or related system is limited to the repair or replacement of the Product under the limited warranty provided herein. INTENT DIGITAL shall not be liable for any consequential damages (even if advised of the possibility of the same) or incidental liability or loss. 6 2.0 INSTALLATION 2.1 Getting Started The DCM Digital Control Modules require a 12 volt power connection and a two wire network connection. Both power and network plug into the four position terminal connector on the rear of the units. Power can be supplied locally from a wall wart or over a four wire cable containing both power and data. The top cover of the DCM module shows the pin outs for the cable connections. Network cables can be connected between modules in a daisy chain configuration, star configuration or mix of both configurations. Note: If the DCM module is provided as part of a VoteLynx system then all firmware and jumper setting have been pre-configured at the factory. SUPPLIED HARDWARE AND CABLES Check to make sure that you have received the following equipment and accessories with each ControLynx module. MOUNTING MODULE Use screws through the holes in the bottom plate to securely mount the DCM module to a flat surface. The mounting holes also match up with the hole spacing on a standard EIA 19 rack rail. SWITCHES & INDICATORS Power LED: Green LED lights to indicate that the module has power applied. Service LED: Red LED blinks on and off to indicate that the module is unconfigured. LED glows red while application program is being loaded over the network. Reset Switch: Press switch to restart module. Service Switch: Press this switch as instructed by the network manager to load an application or install the module on the network. 6

7 2.2 Cabling and Connectors. NETWORK CONNECTIONS: The table below shows the connections to the four pin network terminal connector. Net A and Net B pins connect to the ControLynx network. The network connections are polarity independent so the module will work correctly no matter which direction the pins are connected to the network. 9 2.3 Jumper Descriptions Each DCM module contains jumpers that allow you to configure the hardware for specific applications. Section 2.4 describes standard jumper settings for each of the DCM modules as shipped from the factory. The table below describes each jumper on the DCM module and its function. To access the jumpers remove the four screws on the cover of the DCM module and lift off the cover. 12 3.0 CONFIGURATION & OPERATION 3.1 INSTALLING THE MODULE ON THE NETWORK The ControLynx DCM Digital Control Modules must be configured on the network in order to operate correctly. This configuration is also known as network installation and refers to the process of telling the system that the ControLynx module exists and can communicate on the network. For this process it is assumed that the module is already physically connected into the network cables and power supply as discussed earlier in this manual. Network management software such as Intent Digital s CAT, Echelon s LonMaker or other third party software is required for the DCM network installation process. If the DCM module is supplied as a component in an Intent Digital configured system such as VoteLynx then network installation will generally already have been completed at the factory. To begin the installation copy the files from the floppy disk into the network management tool s directory containing other NXE type files. Using the network installation tool bind the desired network variables on the DCM module to variables of other modules on the system using the Service Pin or ID Number method. Initiate Install function on the network tool. Service Button Method: This is the most common install method. Press the Service Button on the module you wish to configure. Network variable binding and installation will occur automatically once the button is pressed. ID Number Method: Enter the 12 character ID number supplied with the module when prompted by the network tool. Network variable binding and installation will occur automatically on the module matching the 12 character ID. Once the module is installed you have the option to set its personality through the use of network configuration variables. These settings for each of the variables is easily checked and modified using the network management tool. Descriptions for module configuration and network variables are separate documentation. In Intent Digital configured systems these variables are preset at the factory. 12
