2 Important Safeguards When using any motorized electrical device, basic precautions should always be followed, including the following: This system of components is designed to make office desks / tables height adjustable. Do not use for anything other than its intended purpose. Inspect the system for damage from shipping before installing or connecting to power. Do not attempt to disassemble the controller for any reason. Repair must be done by authorized service personnel only. Locate the desk / table on level solid flooring. Do not locate or operate the system where it is humid, dusty, poorly ventilated, exposed to vibrations or exposed to extreme temperature changes. Locate the desk / table at least 50 mm (2 inches) away from any walls, from under any cabinet, or anything that can interfere with the movement of the desk/table. Do not use outdoors. Make certain all cables and power cords are able to move freely and do not become stretched or pinched during full movement of the desk / table. Do not insert anything into the controller as that may create a risk of fire or electric shock. Close supervision is necessary when any electrically powered device is used near children. Ensure that desk / table loads are evenly distributed, and that load specifications are not exceeded. Make sure frequency of use does not exceed the specified duty cycle. Be certain to connect the power cord to a power outlet that meets specified voltage and current requirements. When the unit is plugged in, it is on and fully functional. For complete electrical disconnection, pull out the main plug. Do not use the desk / table to lift, move or support people. To prevent overheating, be certain the controller and motors are not covered. Do not disconnect the switch or motors from the controller while the system is connected to power. General Information about Table Lift Components The controller, motors, cables and switch do not require regular maintenance. Most service issues that may arise can be addressed by the customer with the help of the "Trouble Shooting Guide" (see appendix B). Motion of the table is achieved with motors attached to a power screw. The rotating screw is supported by a power nut fixed within a support tube in the lower section of the table assembly. A loss of power during the operation of the table will have no impact on its operation once power has been restored. If one of the switches, motors or cables fails, or if the connections between these components become disengaged, the table will not move up or down. The table assembly does not have any limit switches. The table position is recorded in the controller by counting pulses emitted by sensors in the motor. Resetting the controller resets the counters in the controller. 2
3 General Information about Table Lift Components - continued Conditions for which the controller will stop during normal operation are: Current Limit - when the current delivered to the motor exceeds a specific limit. Overheating - when the table is cycled up and down repeatedly and exceeds its duty cycle. Timeout - when the controller detects that the motor is not moving at the programmed speed. When the conditions which caused the controller to stop no longer exist, the controller will resume normal operation. The controls and motors constantly exchange information about table position. If a table is disassembled and components (motors or controls) from another table are used to assemble a new table, the new assembly will require resetting. What is Resetting? Resetting a controller will bring the controller to a state that it was during initial manufacture of the table assembly. A controller that has been reset expects the table to be in its lowest position (against hard stops at the bottom of the table stroke). Field Service is Required for the Following: Faulty Motor / Cable Faulty Controller Faulty Switch Loose Power Nut Components Necessary for Field Service: Test Controllers (with the correct program) Test Motors/Cables Test Switches Voltmeter Screwdrivers Power Nut Assembly (the correct pitch and stroke) How to Reset a Controller: A controller may be reset in one of two ways: When connected to motors - Push and hold the "Down" button until the table moves downward to its lowest position. Continue to hold the button (for approximately 5 seconds) until the table resumes downward travel, stops and a double click is heard from the controller. When not connected to motors - Press and hold the "Down" button until a double click is heard from the controller. It is not possible to reset a controller connected to motors that do not reach a mechanical stop. 3
4 Glossary Double Clicking - the sound of relays opening and closing within the controller. Duty Cycle - a ratio of "on time" to "off time" of a system that will prevent overheating of the electronics. Mechanical Stop - a condition in which motor rotation is prevented. Table Controller - the controller attached the table being serviced. Test Controller - a functional controller that is in the possession of the field service representative. Table Motors/Cables - the motor/cable assemblies attached the table being serviced Test Motors/Cables- functional motor/cable assemblies that are in the possession of the field service representative. Table Switch - the switch attached the table being serviced Test Switch - a functional switch that is in the possession of the field service representative Sequence of Steps for Table Service: Ensure that all of the appropriate steps in the "Trouble Shooting Guide" (see Appendix B) have been taken. If the table is not moving, go to step 1, otherwise go to step Check Primary Controller Function b. Unplug table controller from power receptacle. c.
