1 GSDR Basic set up using QRP2000. Modes using third party software will be covered in another tutorial. Remember you must download two files, the install and the latest update. Extract both folders and copy all the files from the update to the install folder. Allow files to be over written! GSDR doesn't actually install on your computer, it is self contained in each folder. You can have as many instances of the program you want. A tip when you update in the future. Copy the current program folder to a back up folder and then apply the update. If for some reason the update has bugs you can easily go back to the older version.

2 GSDR has built in QRP2000 support. The PTT control is through QRP2000 using a jumper to the Avala01 which is covered in another PDF. The first thing I do is to calibrate the SI570. GSDR now supports Si570 calibration with the QRP2000. In the QRP2000 box press the GET button and the boxes should populate. The VID and PID are read only but the Si570 Address (I2C) is changeable. The flow I use is to press GET and then APPLY to save the configuration. If for some reason you go to far with the Si570 Xtal numbers you can always select CANCEL and be back to where you started. To adjust the frequency just press the up or down arrows till the frequency is centered. You need to press SET to check your progress. When done press SAVE. See the next slide.

5 Now you can see each time I changed the numbers and pressed SET till is was right on center. The last adjustment may require you manually enter a number between the steps the arrow buttons gives.

6 Next using a signal source calibrate LEVEL. Just input the frequency and level of the signal and select START. RX image adjustment is covered in another tutorial.

7 Next is sound card setup. Pretty straight forward. If you get popping or intermittent audio then change buffer and sample rate. Some cards require IQ correction to work correctly. You also need to find your max output voltage for your sound card. Set your DVM to AC scale and connect to audio out cable from sound card, Tip and Shield. When you press test record the voltage and enter it in the block.

8 VAC(Virtual Audio Cable) This is the audio link to communicate with other programs like WSPR, JT65HF, Fldigi and others. The virtual cable are setup by another program. See next slide

9 VAC(Virtual Audio Cable) Each virtual cable connects the different software to GSDR or other SDR program. The full version much be purchased at: I have heard of folks successfully using the free version but the pay version is recommended. You need two cables to make connection. GSDR input from another program on Virtual Cable 1 and output to the other program on Virtual Cable 2. On the third part software it will be set up just the opposite Input VC2 and Output VC1

10 This is where TX image adjustment is accomplished. Need to be completed for each band of operation and click CALIBRATE BAND each time. The process is covered in another PDF.

11 This is the Transmit Tab. Things to note are the TUNE Power setting. When pressing tune it will go to this setting. Can be manually adjusted on the main radio controls page. Also the TX IF shift. It is recommended that you use this setting so that TX image rejection is constant across band. When Image adjustment is done the TX Frequency is 10khz above the LO so I make my shift 10khz. GSDR will shift 10khz each time you transmit. The block is in hz so I use I forgot to change it before making slide.

12 PA Settings: This is used to set your maximum out put power. Before starting click reset and all bands will show 48.0 this is center or medium power. Then check each band you will use. With TUNE set to 100% adjust number values lower for higher power and number values higher for lower output power. This allows you to never exceed the max power of your PA with slider to 100%. 36 is max and 56 is minimum power settings. The ADC is used for Power meter calibration but other hardware is needed for functionality. DO NOT CLICK CALIBRATE WHEN DONE JUST CLICK SAVE AT BOTTOM!

13 Test page: Some useful tools here. One test that I have used is the signal generator. You can select tone and output and with head phones plug into the Avala01 you can check left and right audio. There are several different type of wave patterns for troubleshooting.

14 Cat Control Page: This is where you set GSDR control from third party software. You need to install a program that links com ports that you will use at each end. See the next slide.

15 This is the program I use. You need to link com ports so each end is a different number but linked. Otherwise you would get com port conflicts. For example lets say we want JT65HF to control PTT on the Avala01. We could use pair 7 and 17. One end, COM 7, would be used on the GSDR PTT and the other end, COM17, would be used in the JT65HF program. So when the PTT signal is sent through COM17 it will end up at COM7 to activate PTT in GSDR.
