1 Mix Rack Remote Conversion This guide shows how to convert your Mix Rack for remote operation with Stage 48 remote stage boxes. See the Stage 48 Guide in the Stage 48 package for information on how to configure your remote system, and for instructions on removing Mix Rack stage I/O cards and installing them in Stage Remove the Mix Rack s front panel cover by unscrewing its mounting screws (#1 Phillips). Mounting screws (remove all) Converting your Mix Rack consists of the following steps: Preparing the Mix Rack for installation Installing the Ethernet Snake card Connecting the 40-pin High Density ribbon cable Testing Mix Rack Mix Racks with two (2) HDx TDM Option cards, or one (1) HDx card and one (1) VENUE MADI card, are not compatible with the Ethernet Snake card. Required Materials The following materials are required to complete this procedure: Ethernet Snake Card package, which includes the following: Ethernet Snake card One (1) 40-pin High Density (HD) ribbon cable Two (2) 50-pin ribbon cables (not used in Mix Rack) Screws (not used in Mix Rack) Cable ties (not used in Mix Rack) SC48 (-20) Remote Conversion Guide (not used for Mix Rack) This guide Phillips #1 screwdriver Blank I/O slot covers (blank covers from Stage 48 are compatible with Mix Rack) Figure 1. 2 Installing the Ethernet Snake Card Next, install the Ethernet Snake card and connect ribbon cables. The Ethernet Snake card must be installed in slot C of Mix Rack, and no card can be installed above it in slot B. The stage I/O card ribbon cables that were disconnected from the stage I/O cards in Mix Rack are connected to the Ethernet Snake card according to how the cables are marked. The 50-pin ribbon cables included in the Snake card package are not used in Mix Rack. To install the Snake card: 1 Hold the Ethernet Snake card by its edges and gently slide it into slot C of Mix Rack. 2 Secure the Ethernet Snake card to the back of the console using the included back panel screws. 3 Inside the open front panel of Mix Rack, tighten the two captive thumbscrews to secure the card to the Mix Rack chassis. 4 On the top of the Ethernet Snake card, locate the five I/O card ports. In the figure below, the ports labeled A, B, and C are for connecting remote input cards to the system, and the ports labeled D and E are for connecting remote output cards. 7 Connect cable C as follows for Stage inputs (under Analog Card C in the VENUE Patchbay), depending on the local/remote input configuration of the system: If you moved the third AI16 card to a Stage 48, connect ribbon cable C to port C on the Ethernet Snake card. or If the third AI16 card is located in the rack (in slot D) to provide local stage I/O, connect cable C directly to the card. 8 If applicable, connect cable D to port D on the Ethernet Snake card for the first remote output card. These outputs appear as Stage outputs 1 16 in VENUE (under Analog Card D in the VENUE Patchbay). 9 If applicable, connect cable E to port E on the Ethernet Snake card for the second remote output card. These outputs appear as Stage outputs in VENUE (under Analog Card E in the VENUE Patchbay). If any remote output cards are used in the system, port D on the Ethernet Snake card must be connected to the Hub 48 card. If the system includes one remote output card and one local output card, and you want the remote output card to appear as Stage Outputs 17 32, connect the ribbon cable from port D on the Ethernet Snake card to port E on the Hub Proceed to Installing the 40-Pin HD Cable on page 3. A E D B C Front Panel of Mix Rack Figure 3. Ethernet Snake card I/O ports, when viewed from above Stage I/O card ribbon cable connections to the Ethernet Snake card must be alphabetically justified. For example, Ethernet Snake card connector A must always be populated. If two remote input cards are in use, then connectors A and B must be populated. The same rule applies to outputs. Connector D must always be populated for any output cards installed in a Stage Connect the ribbon cable marked A to port A on the Ethernet Snake card. This connection corresponds to Stage inputs 1 16 in VENUE (under Analog Card A in the VENUE Patchbay). 6 Connect cable B to port B on the Ethernet Snake card. This connection corresponds Stage inputs in VENUE (under Analog Card B in the VENUE Patchbay). 2 Mix Rack Remote Conversion
3 Installing the 40-Pin HD Cable Next, install the 40-pin High Density (HD) cable (part number , included in the Ethernet Snake card package). It is connected from the second Mix Engine card on the Ethernet Snake card. 3 Connect the 40-pin HD cable to the port labeled FireWire on the second Mix Engine card. Make sure the cable is properly seated and locked to the connector. To install the 40-pin HD cable: 1 On the Ethernet Snake card, locate the blue 40-pin port to the left of the output card ports, and connect the 40-pin HD cable to the port, making sure the cable is secure. Figure 6. FireWire port on the second Mix Engine card. 4 Use available back panel card slot covers ( ) on any empty stage I/O card slots on the back of Mix Rack. Stage 48 card slot covers are compatible with Mix Rack I/O card slots. Figure 4. The 40-pin port on the Ethernet Snake card 2 Locate the second Mix Engine card in Mix Rack. The second Mix Engine card is the card adjacent to the back most card in the rack. Do not reattach the front panel of Mix Rack until you have finished all diagnostic and audio tests. 5Proceed to Testing Mix Rack on page 4. Back Panel of Mix Rack Figure 5. The second Mix Engine card The location of the Mix Engine cards vary depending on the version of your Mix Rack. However, the second Mix Engine card is always adjacent to the rear most card in the rack. Mix Rack Remote Conversion 3
4 Testing Mix Rack After installing all parts, first verify Mix Rack, then run diagnostic and audio tests. 3 In the Troubleshooting section, locate the RUN DIGITEST button. Verifying Mix Rack To verify Mix Rack: 1 Connect and power on your VENUE system according to the connection and power-on procedures outlined in the Stage 48 Guide. 2 In VENUE, go to the Options > Devices page to verify both Mix Engine cards and all stage I/O. Remote stage I/O cards appear as locally installed I/O cards in the back panel graphic on the Options > Devices page in VENUE. Any stage I/O located remotely in Stage 48 units will not appear unless the proper connection and power-up procedures for Stage 48 are followed. For any stage I/O cards that do not appear, make sure I/O card ribbon cables in Mix Rack and/or Stage 48 are properly connected. Figure 8. Options > Systems page showing the RUN DIGITEST button 4 Confirm that you want to run the DigiTest by clicking the RUN DIGITEST button. The DigiTest diagnostic screen is displayed showing installed Mix Engine cards (LS Engine). Figure 7. Options > Devices page showing installed I/O (left) and Mix Engine cards (right) 3 Proceed to Diagnostic and Audio Tests. Diagnostic and Audio Tests Diagnostic Tests Make sure that no audio monitoring systems are connected to the system before running the diagnostic tests. To perform diagnostic tests: 1 Put your VENUE system into Config mode by double-clicking the Mode display in the Status Bar, located in lower-right hand corner of the screen. 2 Go to the Options > System page. Figure 9. The DigiTest Diagnostics screen 5 Click Run. For each card that passes the test, Passed is displayed in the Status column. If any cards fail, please check connections on all cards, including connections to both Mix Engine cards and the Hub 48. If problems persist, contact VENUE support: 6 On-screen, click Quit to exit Digitest mode. 4 Mix Rack Remote Conversion
5 Audio Tests If the Stage 48 units being used with the system are present, you can test them to make sure I/O is configured properly. Channel order for remote I/O is determined by the order in which cards are installed in Stage 48 (top to bottom), and which snake port on the Ethernet Snake card a Stage 48 is connected to ( Stage 1 A/B is first, and Stage 2 A/B is second), as described in the following examples: Inputs In a system with two AI16 cards installed in the top and middle slots of a Stage 48 connected to the Stage 1 A port of the Ethernet Snake card, the inputs on the topmost card correspond to Stage inputs 1 16 in VENUE. The inputs on the second AI16 card correspond to Stage inputs If a third remote AI16 card is present, located in either the bottom slot of the first Stage 48, or in any slot of a second Stage 48 connected to the Stage 2 A port of the Ethernet Snake card, then the card s channels correspond to Stage inputs Outputs In a system with two output cards installed in two separate Stage 48 units, the output card installed in a Stage 48 connected to the Stage 1 A port on the Ethernet Snake card correspond to Stage outputs 1 16, and the output card installed in the Stage 48 connected to the Stage 2A port correspond to Stage output channels When testing remote I/O, make sure that Stage 48 ID switches are set correctly, and that each Stage 48 is connected to the corresponding Ethernet Snake port on the Ethernet Snake card, as shown in the Stage 48 Guide. To perform audio tests: 1 Go to the Patchbay > Inputs page and make sure Stage inputs are assigned to Input Channels one-to-one. 2 Connect an audio source to input channel 1 on the first AI16 card. 3 Connect an output destination such as a powered speaker to output channel 1 and commence playback from your audio source to confirm audio. 4 Proceed to test each remote AI16 card input. 5 If an AI16 card is installed in Mix Rack, test the inputs by connecting a source to the first input on the card. This input should correspond to Stage input 33 in VENUE. Test the rest of the inputs on the card. 6 After testing all AI16 card channels, proceed to test all output card channels. 7 When all tests are complete, reattach the Mix Rack front panel using the original screw.
