3 INTRODUCTION The Remote Logic I/O [Input/Output] PCB (LOGIO) adds I/O capability to a Remote I/O Controller LAN Node PCB (RIO) in a MicroTrac DSD system. The LOGIO is connected to the RIO through use of an I/O expansion bus. Upon power-up, the RIO will realize that the LOGIO is present, and begin utilizing the added I/O. This document explains the hardware of the Remote Logic I/O PCB (LOGIO) and how to utilize its I/O capability. HARDWARE DESCRIPTION POWER REQUIREMENTS The power connector on the RIO is used to supply the RIO and the Remote I/O PCBs with power. The RIO supplies power to each of the Remote I/O PCBs through the I/O expansion bus. The power requirements for each of the voltages connected to the RIO, therefore, include the power drawn by the RIO and the power drawn by each of the Remote I/O PCBs. In order to select a properly sized power supply, the current (I) requirements of the PCBs for each of the voltages must be known. The I requirements for the LOGIO are as follows: I for +5 VDC = (I of LOGIO) + (I of external = (436 ma) + (I of external I for +15 VDC = (I of LOGIO) + (I of external = (13 ma) + (I of external I for -15 VDC = (I of LOGIO) + (I of external = (13 ma) + (I of external I for +24 VDC = (I of LOGIO) + (I of external = (142 ma) + (I of external I/O EXPANSION BUS The I/O expansion bus connects the RIO to Remote I/O PCBs through use of a 40 pin ribbon cable. The bus is intended to be connected in a daisy chain style from Remote I/O PCB to Remote I/O PCB, originating from the RIO. There are two I/O expansion bus connectors (J1-A and J1-B) on the LOGIO that allow the LOGIO to be added into a given system to meet specific requirements. The intention of having two connectors rather than one is to simplify the making of the ribbon cables. Multiple ribbon cables with one connector on each end can interconnect an entire remote I/O system rather than one complex cable with many connectors. The I/O expansion bus carries logic level signals and power to the Remote I/O PCBs. Care should be taken in the routing of the cable in order to keep it away from noise inducing circuitry. Furthermore, the maximum I/O expansion bus length should not exceed 10 feet. 3 RD

4 CHANNEL SELECT JUMPER The channel select jumper (J2) allows the LOGIO to be defined at a previously specified channel. The channel select jumper must be in place prior to powering up a remote I/O system in order for the RIO to recognize that the LOGIO exists. NON-ISOLATED LOGIC INPUTS The LOGIO has 16 non-isolated logic inputs. The inputs are suitable for 24 VDC logic only. All of the inputs are software configurable to be of type sink or source, however, all of the inputs must be of the same type. An input that is specified as sink is a logical 1 (Hi) when the input is grounded. In the sink configuration, a pullup 2.7 K ohm resistor is provided to the +24 VDC source. The resistor is provided to keep the input in the off state (logic 0) in the absence of an input. An input that is specified as source means that an input is a logical 1 (High) when the input is at the +24 VDC level. In the source configuration, a pulldown 2.7 K ohm resistor is provided to COMMON. The resistor is provided to keep the input in the off state (logic 0) in the absence of an input. The non-isolated logic inputs are called LIN0 through LIN15 and can be connected through TB1 pins 5 through 12 for LIN0 to LIN7, respectively, and through TB1 pins 17 through 24 for LIN8 to LIN15, respectively. Power connection terminals are provided that will supply +24 VDC (TB1 pins 1, 2, 13, 14) and COMMON (TB1 pins 3, 4, 15, 16). NON-ISOLATED LOGIC OUTPUTS The LOGIO has 7 non-isolated logic outputs. Each output is capable of sinking 200 ma to COMMON when in the on state (when a logic 1 is written). When in the off state (when a logic 0 is written), the output will float. The non-isolated logic outputs are called LOUT0 through LOUT6 and can be connected through TB1 pins 29 through 35, respectively. Power connection terminals are provided that will supply +24 VDC (TB1 pins 25, 26) and COMMON (TB1 pins 27, 28). ISOLATED LOGIC I/O The LOGIO has 8 sockets (J3 to J10 for I/O module 0 to 7) that will support up to 8 OPTO-22 type isolated logic I/O modules. These I/O modules come in a variety of configurations including input activation by +5 VDC or 115 VAC and outputs capable of driving 115 VAC. Each I/O module has a 5 amp fuse (F1 to F8 for I/O module 0 to 7) in series with the load. The fuse is socketed for ease of replacement. Each I/O module also has a status LED (DS1 to DS8 for I/O module 0 to 7). The LED will light when the module is on (input is present, output is turned on). The LED can facilitate trouble shooting. Writing a logic 1 to an output I/O module will assert the module s output. Likewise, an input module will be a logic 1 when the input is asserted. Each output has 8 bits of resolution and a voltage range from 0 to +5 VDC. The output is as accurate as the +5 VDC supply. The analog outputs are called ANOUT0 and ANOUT1 and can be connected through TB1 pins 37 and 39, respectively. The analog outputs can be referenced to COMMON, for which a terminal (TB1 pin 38) is provided. There are also terminals provided (TB1 pins 36, 40) for shield tie points, which are shorted together on the PCB and are not connected to any other PCB signals. OPERATIONAL DESCRIPTION NODE/CHANNEL/SUBCHANNEL DEFINITION The PAC language defines a particular Input or Output by use of a Node, a Channel, and a Subchannel.
