2 IntelliRupter PulseCloser Fault Interrupter Tomorrow s Technology Available Today S&C s IntelliRupter PulseCloser Fault Interrupter is a breakthrough in overhead and underground distribution system protection. This unitized package of fault-interrupting and control components can operate as a stand-alone fault interrupter or, with appropriate options, can be integrated into a SCADA system and/or an S&C IntelliTeam SG Automatic Restoration System. IntelliRupter fault-interrupting devices feature S&C s revolutionary PulseClosing Technology a unique means for verifying that the line is clear of faults before initiating a close operation. PulseClosing Technology is superior to conventional reclosing. It greatly reduces stress on system components, as well as voltage sags experienced by customers upstream of the fault. Overhead System Applications IntelliRupter fault interrupters provide outstanding protection on overhead systems through 38 kv. They are available in upright-crossarm and compact-crossarm mounting configuration models, with or without an integrated, hookstick-operated disconnect for visible air-gap isolation of switched-open circuits. See Figure 1. IntelliRupter fault interrupters provide full liveswitching performance under all ice conditions circuit making, circuit breaking, and advanced fault interrupting are accomplished within the interrupters. There are no external moving parts. On disconnect-equipped models, the disconnect is interlocked with the interrupters to ensure they are open prior to opening or closing the disconnect. The interrupting devices may be operated with the disconnect in either position. A status point is provided for remote monitoring of disconnect position. IntelliRupter fault interrupters are factoryassembled on a stainless-steel base and include: Three-pole vacuum interrupters rated 630 amperes continuous, 16,000 amperes interrupting at 15 kv, and 12,500 amperes interrupting at 27 kv and 38 kv. 5 Integrated Global Positioning System. Provides 1-ms accurate time-stamping of events to speed post-event analysis, as well as Pad-Mounted Style IntelliRupter fault interrupter location data for entry into your graphical information system. Controlled access to enclosure compartments. S&C s Penta-Latch Mechanism provides automatic door latching and permits padlocking only when the door is securely latched. Doors can only be opened with a pentahead socket wrench or tool. Long-lasting enclosure protection. The enclosure is protected from corrosion by S&C s Ultradur Finishing System. The roof is undercoated with an insulating no-drip compound. A resilient closed-cell gasket on the enclosure bottom flange protects the finish from being scratched during installation, and isolates it from the alkalinity of a concrete foundation. Terminals equipped with 600-ampere bushings (with studs). Bushing interfaces are in accordance with ANSI/IEEE Standard 386 and accept all standard separable insulated connectors. Parking stands are provided adjacent to each bushing. Grounding provisions, suitable for use with separable insulated connectors and related accessories, are located in the termination compartment. Hinged roof section over the cable-termination compartment, allowing easy cable pulling during installation. The cable-termination compartment accommodates either single 600-ampere deadbreak connectors equipped with elbow-style surge arresters, or two stacked 600-ampere deadbreak connectors without elbow-style surge arresters. Elbow-style surge arresters are required on both sides of Pad-Mounted Style IntelliRupter fault interrupters when installed on a feeder to protect it from surges beyond its ratings. When installed in a substation or at the base of a riser/dip pole, surge arresters are only required on the load side of Pad-Mounted Style IntelliRupter fault interrupters. Figure 2. 6 Fault Testing with a PULSE... Instead of a BANG! Conventional reclosers stress the circuit with fault current every time they reclose into a fault. But after IntelliRupter fault interrupter interrupts a fault, it uses PulseClosing Technology to intelligently test for fault current before closing. The oscillograms in Figure 3 show the remarkable difference in current versus time during fault testing with a conventional recloser and an IntelliRupter fault interrupter. The relative let-through energy, in I 2 t, of an operation using PulseClosing Technology is typically less than 5% of a conventional reclosing operation, as shown in Figure 4. Current versus time conventional recloser fault from phase wire to grounded neutral Current versus time lntellirupter PulseCloser Fault Interrupter fault from phase wire to grounded neutral Figure 3. PulseClosing Technology drastically reduces overcurrent stress on the system, as shown here for a permanent phase-wire to grounded-neutral fault. 5,000,000 Conventional Reclosing 4,000,000 Ampere 2 Seconds 3,000,000 2,000,000 For more information on PulseClosing Technology, see Applications Assessment Of PulseClosing Technology on S&C s website, at: sandc.com/applicationassessment 1,000,000 Pulseclosing 0 0 2,000 4,000 6,000 8,000 10,000 Current, Amperes Figure 4. 7 Innovative Technology Is the Key After clearing a fault, a conventional recloser simply recloses the interrupters to test for continued presence of the fault. If the fault is still there, the interrupters are tripped again. Then, after a time delay, the interrupters are reclosed. With each reclosing operation, even the fastest recloser feeds a significant amount of energy into the fault, resulting in system-damaging stress and voltage sags. Figure 5 shows how a conventional recloser operates in response to a permanent single-phase-toground fault. The uncontrolled closing often results in asymmetric fault current, significantly increasing peak energy into the fault. But after an IntelliRupter fault interrupter clears a fault, it tests for continued presence of the fault using S&C s advanced magnetic actuator design, coupled with unique PulseClosing Technology. IntelliRupter fault interrupters intelligently close at a precise point on the voltage wave, resulting in a short pulse that s less than half the symmetrical fault current. Figure 6 shows how IntelliRupter fault interrupters operate in response to a permanent single-phaseto-ground fault, with a typical current pulse of just 5 milliseconds. With IntelliRupter fault interrupters, your system only experiences overcurrent stress from the initial fault not from every reclosing operation. Component life is extended, eliminating costly replacement. PulseClosing Technology also dramatically reduces through-faults a leading cause of premature aging of substation transformers. And power quality is improved since use of PulseClosing Technology doesn t disturb source-side customers with irritating voltage sags and blinks. Fully Compatible with IntelliTeam SG Automatic Restoration System IntelliRupter fault interrupters can take full advantage of S&C s IntelliTeam SG Automatic Restoration System. IntelliTeam SG is the latest generation of S&C s field-proven automatic restoration system. Its Rapid Self-Healing feature accomplishes restoration in seconds. The IntelliTeam SG system includes a setup tool IntelliTeam Designer which greatly simplifies configuration and deployment. The IntelliTeam SG system uses all available alternate sources to restore unfaulted line segments, without overloading any part of the system. The system minimizes the number of customers experiencing an extended power interruption, tremendously improving your system. Average Interruption Duration Index. IntelliTeam SG can handle multiple contingencies, too. Initial trip First PulseClose operation Initial trip First reclose operation Second reclose operation Figure 5. Conventional reclosing in response to a permanent fault. Second PulseClose operation Figure 6. Response to a permanent fault with PulseClosing Technology. The opposite-polarity pulse detects magnetizing inrush current; if the transformer is not faulted, IntelliRupter fault interrupter closes. For more information on the IntelliTeam SG Automatic Restoration System, see S&C Descriptive Bulletin on S&C s website, at: sandc.com/

8 Enhanced Performance in Loop Restoration Applications IntelliRupter fault interrupters enhance the performance of existing loop-restoration schemes using conventional reclosers. They eliminate the need to subject the alternate circuit in the loop to a fault when closing the tie. Just replace the recloser in the tie position with an IntelliRupter fault interrupter to take advantage of PulseClosing Technology. Even greater benefits can be achieved in loop schemes where all protective points use IntelliRupter fault interrupters. The device s fast interrupters and accurate sensing and control enable significant reductions in protection margins. With the negligible effect PulseClosing Technology has on source-side customers, the system can be segmented as needed without sacrificing protection. And with IntelliRupter fault interrupters protecting the loop, customers won t experience voltage sags on their good circuit during testing of a faulted circuit! Complaints and costly claims will be greatly reduced. Improved Reliability IntelliRupter fault interrupters improve reliability on both loop and radial circuits by overcoming the limits of conventional coordination methods. Seriesconnected IntelliRupter fault-interrupting devices can be configured so that after one device opens to isolate a fault, those downstream with the same settings also open. When power returns, the IntelliRupter fault interrupters use the PulseFinding Fault Location Technique to restore service. This technique automatically recovers from situations where an upstream device overreaches or otherwise miscoordinates with a downstream device. Here s an example: The feeder in Figure 7 includes a recloser, A1, and an IntelliRupter fault interrupter, A2. Due to tight or improper coordination, both devices trip in response to a fault downstream of the IntelliRupter Fault Interrupter. Figure 7. PulseFinding Fault Location Technique with an upstream recloser. When the recloser closes, in the next step of its operating sequence, it won t see the fault. So it remains closed. IntelliRupter fault interrupters, upon sensing return of voltage, use a pulse of current to detect the presence of a fault. The pulses are too short to initiate time-overcurrent timing of the recloser, so the recloser won t trip. If the fault is no longer present during the pulsing sequence, the IntelliRupter fault interrupter closes. The system is fully restored. If, however, the fault persists, the IntelliRupter fault interrupter locks out. But service is restored to customers served from the feeder section between the recloser and IntelliRupter fault interrupter. Those customers only experience a momentary outage from tripping of the recloser. If A2 were a recloser instead of an IntelliRupter fault interrupter, the system wouldn t be able to recover from the miscoordination between A1 and A2 because each reclose operation puts full fault current on the system. Both devices would again time and trip. Ultimately, A1 would lock out. With the IntelliRupter fault interrupter, more series-connected protective devices can be applied for better sectionalization. Each uses a pulse, in turn, to verify that its line segment is unfaulted, and then closes to restore service. Only the IntelliRupter fault interrupter closest to the fault locks out. IntelliRupter fault interrupters never close into a fault. Cold-load inrush is mitigated because only one line segment is energized with each closing. IntelliRupter fault interrupters don t need to communicate with each other to take advantage of this enhanced coordination and inrush mitigation. For more information on the enhanced performance and improved reliability provided by IntelliRupter fault interrupter, see Advancing the State of Looped Distribution Feeders on S&C s website, at: sandc.com/766-t83 A New Concept in Controls IntelliRupter fault interrupters are available with several kinds of control groups. Each offers easy configuration and operation and examination of waveforms and events using secure wireless communication to a nearby laptop computer. The control group includes a protection and control module and a communication module. See Figure 8. This flexible, low-maintenance arrangement offers excellent immunity to surges and noise induced by normal power-line events, such as faults and lightning strikes, and in the case of IntelliRupter fault interrupters for overhead system applications minimizes pole clutter. IntelliRupter fault interrupters are powered from the distribution line through the integral power module(s) or the external power supply, if furnished. The protection and control module provides pointon-wave closing to minimize asymmetric fault current and inrush current. It features a complete set of protection and control functions, including: Simultaneous independent directional phase ground, negative-sequence, and sensitive-earth 8

9 time-overcurrent, instantaneous-overcurrent, and definite-time elements Directional blocking of overcurrent elements Over/under voltage elements Over/under frequency elements Phase unbalance detection Synchronization check Cold-load pickup modifier Comprehensive diagnostics are included, too. A 20-channel GPS chip set provides 1-ms accurate time-stamping of events to speed post-event analysis, as well as IntelliRupter fault interrupter location data for your graphical information system. Select the control group that meets your needs: Standard Control Group. This control group is ideal for: IntelliTeam SG Automatic Restoration System applications. Teams use peer-to-peer communication, real-time data, and distributed intelligence to make automatic operating decisions. No central processing or SCADA is required, though fully supported. Each IntelliRupter fault interrupter must be furnished with an S&C SpeedNet Radio or other approved communication device. Automatic source-transfer applications using two IntelliRupter fault interrupters. The IntelliRupter fault interrupters ensure a high degree of critical-load continuity by minimizing interruptions resulting from loss of a source. For high-speed automatic source transfer, each IntelliRupter fault interrupter must be furnished with an S&C SpeedNet Radio or other approved communication device. Non-communicating IntelliRupter fault interrupters can also perform automatic source transfer using PulseClosing Technology. Automatic loop-restoration applications using normally closed IntelliRupter fault interrupters or conventional reclosers, with a normally open IntelliRupter fault interrupter switching point. The feeder on either side of the switching point can be fed from a different source. If a fault occurs on either feeder, the normally closed devices in that feeder open, then test the circuit using PulseClosing Technology (or reclosing) sequentially to sectionalize and isolate the fault. Service is automatically restored to unfaulted line segments by closing the normally open IntelliRupter fault interrupter. Intelligent fuse-saving applications. The IntelliRupter fault interrupter improves upon conventional fuse saving techniques. Based on fault current magnitude, an IntelliRupter fault interrupter automatically determines whether a fuse-saving fast trip should be used. At high fault currents, a fast trip isn t used, thus reducing momentary disturbances on the feeder. Wide-area SCADA applications. Each IntelliRupter fault interrupter must be furnished with an S&C SpeedNet Radio or other approved communication device. Stand-alone (non-communicating) applications. Communication Module Status Indicator (white LED) Flashes for ½ second every 30 seconds: Normal operation Pulsates dim to bright: Wi-Fi connected On 10 seconds, then flashes for ½ second every 30 seconds: Wi-Fi disconnected. 10 Approved communication devices permit configuration, operation, interrogation, and software maintenance of IntelliRupter fault interrupter from any location having access to the communication system, using IntelliLink Remote Setup Software. No batteries are required for stand-alone applications and applications with operating times of 30 seconds or less; ac line voltage must be available on the IntelliRupter fault interrupter side with the integral power module, or control power must be available from the external power supply, if furnished. The standard control group includes IntelliTeam SG Bronze-level software allows multiple IntelliRupter fault interrupters to be used in two source-restoration systems. When furnished with optional IntelliTeam SG Gold-level software, the standard control group software allows multiple IntelliRupter fault interrupters to be used in applications with three or more sources. IntelliTeam Designer configuration and license-management software unlocks IntelliTeam SG software, making setup fast and easy. Standard Control Group with Battery Backup. This control group is suitable for the same applications as the standard control group. It additionally includes batteries which support operation for a minimum of four hours after loss of ac line voltage on both sides of IntelliRupter fault interrupter, permitting extended dead-line switching. Universal Control Group. This control group is suitable for the same applications as the standard control group with battery backup. It additionally includes either IntelliTeam SG Gold-level software and IntelliTeam Designer configuration and license-management software or an IntelliTeam II Automatic Restoration System software license. When the former is specified, the universal control group may be used in IntelliTeam SG applications with three or more sources. When the latter is specified, the universal control group is suitable for IntelliTeam II applications. Easy Up Easy On IntelliRupter fault interrupter is totally self-contained an especially important consideration in overhead system applications. All major components including sensors, control group, surge arresters, control power, and disconnect (on disconnect style models) are included on the IntelliRupter fault interrupter base and go up in one easy, single-point lift. See Figure 9. Figure 9. Typical Disconnect Style IntelliRupter fault interrupter installation. Includes optional wildlifeprotection feature. Just mount an IntelliRupter fault interrupter on the utility pole and make a single ground connection to the base. Then screw the antenna for the wide-area network radio onto a connector on the base. Connect the high-voltage lines, and you re done! The IntelliRupter fault interrupter features embedded current and voltage sensors that eliminate the cost, clutter, and complexity of separately mounted sensors. There s no control enclosure or control cable to install, either. Because the IntelliRupter fault interrupter is directly powered from the line, there s no external potential transformer to install, no grounding issues to worry about. IntelliRupter fault interrupter installation typically takes about two hours or as little as one hour after your crews get experienced. 10

11 Compare the clean-looking IntelliRupter fault interrupter installation with that of a conventional recloser. See Figure 10. The photos really tell the story. Figure 11. An IntelliRupter fault interrupter has no external control or sensor cables. Figure 10. A typical conventional recloser installation. Control cables are vulnerable to damage from ice, rodents, and vandals. And sensor cables increase exposure to damage from lightning and power surges, and complicate grounding. IntelliRupter fault interrupter eliminates these potential problems. It doesn t have any external control or sensor cables! Compare the cable-less IntelliRupter fault interrupter in Figure 11 with the many-cabled conventional recloser in Figure 12. Figure 12. A conventional recloser has many external control and sensor cables. 11

12 Easy Operation The control group is easy to configure before installation. And it s just as easy to configure after installation, from the security of your vehicle parked up to 150 feet away, as shown in Figure 13. Just establish the secure Wi-Fi connection using your laptop computer and you re ready to go. The Wi-Fi transceiver in the communication module provides encrypted wireless point-to-point communication to your PC operating under the IEEE b standard. Extensive security features prevent unauthorized access. You can open and close lntellirupter fault interrupter, set hot-line tags, and change protection profiles using the simple operation screens. See Figure 14. Detailed logs, oscillography data, and other operational information can be readily accessed and transferred over the wireless link. Software upgrades too. And if an S&C SpeedNet Radio or other approved wide-area network radio has been furnished and it supports configuration through its serial port it can be configured through the wireless link as well. When IntelliRupter fault interrupter is set for remote operation, your dispatcher can test its electrical operation, as well as the entire SCADA control path, including communication. Figure 14. IntelliRupter fault interrupter operation screen. Figure 13. IntelliRupter fault interrupter control group is configured and operated using a secure Wi-Fi communication link. 12

13 If a PC isn t available, an IntelliRupter fault interrupter can be opened and closed and hot-line tags set using a hookstick from the ground or a bucket truck, as shown in Figure 15. Should module replacement ever be necessary, it s easily performed as well, as shown in Figure 16. There s no need to reconfigure an IntelliRupter fault interrupter a memory module in the base remembers all the settings. Figure 15. An IntelliRupter fault interrupter can be opened and closed and hot-line tags set using a hookstick. Figure 16. A protection and control module and communication module are easy to change out, if replacement is ever necessary. 13

18 HOT-LINE TAG LEVER for setting and releasing tags for energized line work. A tag can be set locally using the lever or the secure Wi-Fi communication link, or remotely using SCADA. Normally, a tag is removed the same way it was applied. However, the lever can be used to remove remotely set tags too. This approach meets NESC 442.E requirements, which allow local removal of a remotely set tag if local indication of the tag is provided a HOT-LINE TAG indicator is furnished on the protection and control module. 19 Optional external trip interface. The external trip interface allows hardwire connections from the substation equipment to be decoded and sent to the control through an optical connection, providing complete electrical isolation between the substation control voltages and the IntelliRupter control system. Integrating the IntelliRupter fault interrupter into the substations allows S&C s PulseClosing Technology to directly protect substation transformers. This feature will allow connections to backup relays, transformer and bus differential protection relays, control house indicators, switches, and other substation protection, allowing it to be tripped at protection speeds for these applications. This feature has been designed to work with S&C s IntelliTeam SG Automatic Restoration System, allowing the substation protection to integrate seamlessly with the industry s fastest self-healing system. In addition to the substation application, this new feature also opens opportunities for integrating with distributed energy resources because the IntelliRupter fault interrupter s accurate sensors and directional protection capabilities make it an ideal choice for those applications. The external trip feature provides six inputs and five outputs. See Table 1 for a list of the inputs and outputs with their functional descriptions. The customer interface will accept dc voltages ranging from 19 Vdc to 180 Vdc, allowing it to operate with 24-V, 48-V, and 125-V substation batteries. It can also operate from 102 Vac to 208 Vac.
