3 Description of the Modules Functional Description Hardware Specifications The 1-Port Channelized OC-3/STM-1 CES SM and MM Modules (23N13 and 23N12) offer two operating modes, OC-3 and STM-1. Phase 1 of the modules supports the OC-3 CES operational mode. In Phase 2, the modules add support for the STM-1 mode. The OC-3 CES operational mode of the modules supports 84 asynchronous VT1.5s (DS1s), with each DS1 supporting 24 DS0s. In the OC-3 mode, up to 2 DS0s per T1 can be configured for the HDLC support. The STM-1 operating mode supports 63 asynchronous, channelized VC-12 (E1) interfaces for circuit emulation services (ISDN) and the HDLC Passthrough Interface. Each E1 supports 30 DS0s. The line rate of the modules is approximately 155 Mbps. The linear 1+1 APS/MSP feature provides protection against facility, port, or module failure. (The linear APS/MSP feature supports 1+1 protection only; the N:1 protection feature is not supported by this module). The 1+1 architecture consists of a far-end signal that is continuously bridged (at the electrical level) to the APS/MSP working and APS/MSP protection I/O modules so that the same payloads are transmitted identically to the near-end working and protection I/O modules. At the near-end, the working and protection OC-3/STM-1 signals are monitored independently and identically for failures. The receiving I/O modules select either the working or the protection signal as the one from which to select the traffic, based on switch initiation criteria. Because of the continuous far-end bridge, the 1+1 architecture does not allow an unprotected extra traffic channel to be provided. Table 2 provides the general physical hardware and environmental specifications for the PacketStar PSAX I/O and server modules. Table 2. A high-speed module will communicate at high speed (1.23 Gbps) in a chassis that has a high-speed bus (PSAX 4500 chassis). High-speed modules will communicate at 650 Mbps in any other chassis. Low-speed modules will always communicate at 650 Mbps in any chassis. Module Placement If you are using the module in APS/MSP non-protection mode, place the module in any I/O slot in the PSAX 1000, PSAX 1250, and PSAX If you are using the PSAX 4500, see the Note below regarding mixing high- and low-speed modules on a high-speed chassis segment. If you are using the module in APS/MSP protection mode, you must install either two multimode modules as an adjacent pair, or two single-mode modules as an adjacent pair, into the PSAX chassis. The left module of the pair must be installed in an odd-numbered slot, the right module in the adjacent even-numbered slot. (On the PSAX 1000 system, any consecutively-numbered odd/even slots are acceptable except for slots 15 and 16). Once the modules are placed, either module can serve as the APS/MSP active (primary) module. The other module of the pair serves as the standby module. See Chapter 3 of the PacketStar PSAX Channelized OC-3/STM Module User Guide for additional instructions on configuring the primary and backup modules. The modules may be used in all designated slots for I/O modules in all PSAX chassis, subject to bandwidth calculations restrictions. (See the appropriate PSAX system installation guide). The module is classified as a high-speed module, and runs at full bandwidth in any chassis, in any segment of the chassis, whether high- or low-speed. The PSAX 4500 chassis architecture offers three high-speed segments (Segments 1 3), and one low-speed segment (Segment 4). Segments 1 3 only run high-speed if exclusively loaded with high-speed modules. Segment 4 always runs low-speed because it contains the low-speed CPU2 module. If using the modules in the PSAX 4500 chassis in working/protection configuration, see the PacketStar PSAX 4500 Multiservice Media Gateway User Guide for engineering planning information. Page 4 of 12 1-Port Channelized OC-3/STM-1 CES Multimode/Single-Mode Modules Description and Specifications
5 Note: A segment where high- and low-speed modules are mixed will cause the entire segment to run at low speed. For a list of high- and lowspeed modules, including memory allocation and bandwidth usage specifications, see the appropriate PacketStar Multiservice Media Gateway installation guide. Installing the Modules Note: Read the PacketStar PSAX Safety Guidelines, which accompanies this product, before proceeding.! WARNING: Be sure to use the ejector handles during installation and removal of a PSAX module.! WARNING: Make sure the locking tab at the bottom of the module is UP (looking at module in a vertical position) before you insert it into the chassis.! WARNING: When inserting modules into the chassis, slide them gently, not forcefully. Excessive force may cause the modules to be seated improperly in the chassis, and result in possible damage to the module or the chassis. Install or remove modules one at a time. Doing this aids in preventing the PSAX system from indicating any erroneous failure messages, and allows the PSAX system time to reinitialize and display the accurate configuration of the module that is inserted. Begin 1 Remove the module from its box and ESD protective bag only when you are ready to install it. Be sure to save the box and the ESD bag to ship the module in the future if needed. 2 Open the ejector handle at the top of the module faceplate, and slide the module into an available slot. Be sure to position the module with the ejector handle near the top edge of the chassis opening on PSAX 1250, PSAX 2300, and PSAX 4500 chassis. Position the module horizontally in the PSAX 1000 chassis with the ejector handle to the left. 3 Press the ejector handle until it snaps firmly against the faceplate, and verify that the module is secure in its slot. 4 Insert a flathead screwdriver into the screwdriver slot of the locking tab, and slide the locking tab down into the locking tab slot (see Figure 2). Note: Engage the locking tab on modules in the PSAX 1000, PSAX 2300, or PSAX 4500 chassis. Use of the locking tab is not required for the PSAX 1250 chassis; leave the tab in the up position. 1-Port Channelized OC-3/STM-1 CES Multimode/Single-Mode Modules Description and Specifications Page 5 of 12
6 5 For new installations, run the cabling through a cable management system that provides the necessary connector/cable strain relief to prevent damage to the I/O module connectors.! WARNING: To prevent any damage to the I/O module connectors, do not allow network cables to hang unaided from the connectors. Use standard cable installation procedures to run and secure the network cables through an appropriate cable management system before connecting the cables to the I/O modules. End Figure 2. Locking Tab on the I/O Module Faceplate (Shown in a PSAX 4500 Chassis) Removing the Modules Note: Read the PacketStar PSAX Safety Guidelines, which accompanies this product, before proceeding.! WARNING: Be sure to use the ejector handles during installation and removal of a PSAX module. Begin 1 Disconnect the cables from the module port (or ports). 2 Insert a flathead screwdriver into the screwdriver slot of the locking tab, and slide the locking tab up and out of the locking tab slot (see Figure 3). 7 Figure 3. Locking Tab on the Module Faceplate (Shown in a PSAX 4500 Chassis) 3 Pull backward on the ejector handle until the module is released from the backplane. 4 Remove the module from the chassis. 5 Put the module in its ESD bag, close the bag, and place the module in its original shipping box. 6 If another module is not being immediately inserted into the empty slot, insert a blank faceplate module into the slot to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI) and maintain proper air flow inside the chassis.! CAUTION: Ultimate disposal of this product should be handled according to all laws and regulations in your specific geographic region. End Verifying the Initial Startup Table 4 describes how the light-emitting diode (LED) indicators on the module faceplates respond to different module conditions. These LEDs indicate if the module has been installed properly. Before you configure the module(s), you must ensure that it is properly initialized according to the information provided in Table 4. 1-Port Channelized OC-3/STM-1 CES Multimode/Single-Mode Modules Description and Specifications Page 7 of 12
