4 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Functional Description The PF3100 BMS Controller card is the hub for most of the wiring coming from the valve train. This card is a power producer which means that other cards may draw power from the BMS Controller Card s PFRN ports to gain both communication and power. 1.2 System Requirements The BMS Controller card is designed to be used as part of a modular system, creating a fully communicative burner management control system. In order for the system to function, the following network requirements must be met. UI Cards - Recommended 1 minimum Modbus Cards - Optional as needed Network Cards - Optional as needed Ion Pilot Cards - At least 1 per burner (required) BMS Controller Cards - 1 per burner (required) Thermocouple Cards - 1 minimum per appliance HARDWARE CONNECTION DIAGRAM The following diagram shows how PF3100 cards typically connect to one another. 7 2.4 Terminal Descriptions POWER, COMMON Input power 12 VDC - 24 VDC, 10 A MAX EGND Internally connected to Common STATUS By default, the status contacts will be closed while the system is running and opened when the system is shutdown. This output can also be configured via software settings to behave in different ways that are useful for remote callouts. Note that the contacts are not internally connected to power or ground. 120 VAC/DC, 80 ma max HFV, SSV1, SSV2, PILOT Solenoid valves must be connected between the + and - terminals for each of these. Software selectable PWM options are available if low power solenoid valves are required. The negative terminal is not directly connected to ground so a common return wire for these valves cannot be used. These terminals also have a limitation of 4 amps maximum per output with a combined maximum of 9 amps total. AUX OUT This is a 4-20 ma output signal. The max supply voltage is the power supply input voltage (12/24 VDC). Software selectable modes include: Control of a Temperature Control Valve Echo a measured metric (process temperature, level, pressure etc.) to a PLC or similar device START This input is used to start the BMS, stop the BMS, and clear alarms. When the input is low (open), the BMS will stop. If an alarm is present, toggling the input low and then high (open and closed) will acknowledge the alarm. When there are no alarms present, driving the input high (closed) will start the BMS. PROOF OF CLOSURE If enabled in software, the Proof of Closure (POC) contact will behave as follows. POC must be closed for the duration of the purge time otherwise the purge time will start over again. The contact must close within 2 5 5

8 seconds of the BMS commanding the main valves to close. Otherwise, the system will shut down. If multiple main valves using Proof of Closure exist in the system, these must be wired to the contact in series. AUX IN This dry input can be configured in software to perform several functions including: Proof of Low Fire Proof of Closure on the Pilot Valve Low Pressure Switch input Chamber Pressure input for forced-draft fan proving ESD When low (open), the BMS will shut down. When high (closed), the BMS will be permitted to start if otherwise instructed to do so via the Start Contact, the User Interface, or the Modbus card. PRESSURE This input can be configured via software to work with either a dry contact or a 4-20mA signal. The following options are available: 4-20mA Pressure input (with high and low trip points) High Pressure Switch input only (with option to wire the Low Pressure switch input to the Aux In contact) High and Low Pressure Switch input (wired in series) LEVEL This input can be configured via software to work with either a dry contact or a 4-20 ma signal. 10 CONTROLS AND DIAGNOSTICS The following is a list of all of the user interface items on the BMS Controller card. 3.1 Ports PFRN PORTS 1 PFRN Controller Network Port Port 28 accommodates an Interface class or Controller class card. 4 PFRN IO Network Ports Ports accommodate IO class cards. 3.2 Feature Key An assortment of feature keys are available that enable different feature sets for the PF3100 system. Alternate feature keys can be purchased separately and installed into existing systems. A feature key must be present to operate the BMS. 3.3 LEDs and Buttons The Power and Link LEDs can be found on each PFRN port. 11 3.4 Important Safety Information Before installing the PF3100 system, please review the following list of warnings. Failure to observe the following may result in death, electrocution, property damage, product damage, and/or government fines. WARNING: EXPLOSION HAZARD Do not disconnect while circuit is live unless area is known to be non-hazardous or equivalent. Substitution of components may impair suitability for specified zones. Do not service unless area is known to be non-hazardous. Do not open enclosure while energized. Installation and use must conform to the provided installation instructions. System must be properly connected to earth-ground for effective operation of flame detection circuitry. Electrical devices connected to the controller must meet certain electrical standards and be within voltage limits. Replacement fuses must be ceramic and of correct rating. Avoid unauthorized replacement of the fuse. INSTALLATION WARNINGS For burners greater than 12.5 MMBtuh, additional modules may be required for use with the PF3100 system. It is recommended that the low fire feature be used with burners above 1 MMBtuh. To meet code in some jurisdictions for burners greater than 5 MMBtuh, the Proof of Closure feature must be used. Make sure that the enclosures are securely closed each time after opening. This protects the internal circuitry from moisture damage and other environmental concerns. Moisture damage is not covered by the product warranty. 9 9

12 APPENDIX A: NETWORK TERMINOLOGY The following terms are used to explain the network operations: Interface Class Card - Any PF3100 card that provides a control or monitoring interface to a user or remote PLC. Examples include the User Interface card and the Modbus card. Controller Class Card - Any PF3100 card that provides safety control for a specific application. Examples include the BMS Controller card and Combustor Controller card. Network Class Card - Any PF3100 card that provides multiple network ports so that additional cards may be connected together on the PFRN network. Examples include the Network Switch card, Modbus card, and the BMS Controller card. IO Class Card - Any PF3100 card that provides input and output terminals for control and monitoring. Examples include the Ion Pilot card and the Thermocouple card. PFRN - Profire Reliability Network. A proprietary safety network developed by Profire which can also be used to distribute power. The PFRN has two sub-networks: the Controller Network and the IO Network. Controller Network - A sub-network of PFRN Interface class and Controller class cards talk to each other on this network. There is usually only one of these networks in an installation. IO Network - A sub-network of PFRN IO class card talk to a single Controller class card. There is one of these networks for each Controller class card in the system. 10
