4 What Electrical System Is It? Based on secondary side of upstream transformer, NOT by how load is connected. Most SPD/TVSS order errors are misunderstandings related to grounding or neutrals. Grounded system means that the system is referenced to ground, NOT that there is a safety ground. By convention, ground wires are not counted as one of the wires (3-wire, 4-wire, etc.). 3-phase 4-wire Grounded Wye Neutral bonded to ground. Neutral pulled into facility. Common system configuration V = 120V (208Y/120V) ASCO 2 V = 277V (48OY/277V) ASCO 4 V = 347V (600Y/347V) ASCO 8 V = 127V (220Y/127V) ASCO 21 (non-usa) V = 220V (38OY/220V) ASCO 7 (non-usa) A G N C phase 4-wire Grounded Wye V B 3-phase 4-wire Grounded Wye Neutral bonded to ground. Neutral NOT pulled into facility. Common system configurations at MCC, pumping and water treatment. V = 120V (208Y/120V) APT 2 V = 277V (48OY/277V) APT 4 V = 347V (600Y/347V) APT 8 V = 127V (220Y/127V) APT 21 (non-usa) V = 220V (38OY/220V) APT 7 (non-usa) A G N C 3-phase 4-wire Grounded Wye V B Resistive or Impedance Grounded Wye 3-phase 4-wire Ungrounded Wye Neutral bonded to ground via grounding resistor. Neutral may, or may not, be pulled into facility. Becoming popular system on high-tech applications. V = 120V (208Y/120V) ASCO 2 V = 277V (48OY/277V) ASCO 4 V = 347V (600Y/347V) ASCO 8 V = 127V (220Y/127V) ASCO 21 (non-usa) V = 220V (38OY/220V) ASCO 7 (non-usa) B A R V G C Resistive or Impedance Groun Neutral NOT bonded to ground. Neutral mayor may not be pulled into facility. Rare system configuration; Error/miss-wire?. Note NEC 285.3(2). V = 120V (208Y/120V) Rare - Call ASCO V = 277V (48OY/277V) ASCO 5 V = 347V (600Y/347V) ASCO 9 V = 127V (220Y/127V) Call ASCO (non-usa) V = 220V (38OY/220V) Call ASCO (non-usa) A G C N V B Split-Phase Single-Phase Single-Phase Neutral bonded to ground. V = 240V ASCO 61 V = 48OV ASCO 51 V = 600V ASCO 91 Note NEC 285.3(2) Occasionally seen at industrial facilities. Normally, this is not used on new construction. 18 AC Power SPDs - Series Connected Model 251 (Edco SHP Series) Single Phase Filter, 120 VAC or 240 VAC The ASCO Model 251 hybrid design exhibits performance levels unattainable with simple shunt type protectors. The two active clamp stages, large inductor and shunt capacitance effectively halt high rate-of-rise surge waveforms, thus preventing initial voltage overshoot. Flexibility of installation is another design feature of Model 251. The protector first and second stages are electrically separate (line side) for use in jurisdictions that require a line filter between stages. 19 AC Power SPDs - Series Connected Model 258 (Edco SHA-1250) 120 VAC Single Phase Modular The ASCO Model 258 is an upgraded version of the ASCO Model 254. Model 258 also incorporates two LEDs for failure indication in a modular package (Utilizes 12 pin Beau connector). The hardwire terminal base (ASCO Model SHABA, ordered separately) accommodates all wiring and the protection module is designed for easy replacement. The footprint of the SHABA is the same as Model 254. This makes retrofitting older cabinets easy because internal wire lengths do not have to be adjusted. Model 258 offers remote sensing circuitry output that is a dry relay contact closure suitable to interface with a modem or computer port for polling remotely. With this feature, a central computer could detect a failed Model 258 at the intersection. ACCESSORY SOLD SEPARATELY Model 258 provides excellent noise suppression over a large frequency range. 29 DIN-Rail SPDs Model 105 (Edco DRS Series) DIN Rail Protection The ASCO Model 105 is a din rail mountable, single pair surge suppression module implementing three-stage hybrid technology. This module addresses over-voltage transients with gas tubes and silicon avalanche components. In addition, sneak currents are mitigated with resetable fuses (PTCs). The PTCs increase resistance several orders of magnitude when over-currents exceed safe levels. A normal state resumes when overcurrents are removed. The ability to self-restore in this manner significantly increases suppressor performance and survivability. The Model 105 mounts onto a standard 35mm industrial din rail. There are three Field Side and three Electronics Side screw terminals. One is reserved for a shield. Three electrically tied ground terminals are provided for grounding the Model 105 unit to Building-Approved Ground. Shield is isolated from ground. Two (2) terminal versions without a shield connection are also available. 32 Data / Signal SPDs Model 265 (Edco SLAC Series) AC Power / Signal The ASCO Model 265 suppressor was specifically designed to protect electronic instruments used by the water/wastewater industries. It combines hybrid AC power protection and signal line protection in a NEMA-4X polycarbonate case. The AC power suppressor can supply up to 1875 Watts and has a 15 Amp replaceable fuse to prevent overloading of the protective elements. A Power ON LED provides visual indication that power is applied to instruments. Signal line protection is accomplished by Model 265 available in a variety of voltage clamps. Signal current can be monitored by reading the voltage across the 10 Ohm, 1% resistors (TP1 & TP2 or TP3 & TP4). All leads going to the Model 265 board are terminated by quick disconnect or barrier block connectors to facilitate easy removal for service or replacement. 34 Data / Signal SPDs Model 175 (Edco PC642 Series) Zone/Loop/Data The ASCO Model 175 Series surge suppressor is a two-pair (four-wire) module implementing three-stage hybrid technology. This module addresses over-voltage transients with gas tubes and silicon avalanche components. In addition, sneak and fault currents are mitigated with resettable fuses (PTCs). The PTCs increase resistance by several orders of magnitude when over-currents exceed safe levels. A normal state resumes when over-currents are removed. The ability to self-restore in this manner significantly increases suppressor performance and survivability.
