Map of set-up menu options [abs/inc] [Xo], [Yo] or [Zo] Axis display Sleep/Datahold On Off SLP On SLP OFF Axis Resolution Ar 0.01 Ar Ar Ar Ar Ar Ar Introduction The set-up procedure allows the main default settings for the RGC-3 to be changed. For normal use, the set-up procedure only needs to be performed once and it is possible that the factory defaults are suitable for use without change. The set-up procedure can only be activated just after power is switched on. After switching on, press the concealed key which is located under the R of the RGC-3 on the keypad (see Figure 2). The key must be pressed before the end of the initial self-diagnostic routine. Display Resolution Direction Positive Negative dr 0.01 dr dr dr dr dr dr dir. 0 dir. 1 When the set-up routine is entered, the letters SET-UP appear in the centre display. The set-up procedure utilises a menu system. The main menu consists of a list of options that can be customised for ease of use (see Figure 3). Simply press the [abs/inc] key to scroll through this list until the option to be changed is reached. To change the option, press [Xo], [Yo] or [Zo] for the relevant axis to be confi gured. Radius/diameter Linear error compensation Radius Diameter User Defi nable rad dia LC 0 To save the changes, scroll past the changed option to the next (i.e. Press [abs/inc]). To exit the set-up routine, press the concealed key R of RGC-3. Signal Failure On Off FAIL On FAIL OFF
6 3.2 Sleep/Datahold Datahold allows the RGC-3 to be disabled, but retains the power to the encoder and the memory circuits. Datahold can be used to prevent unauthorised or accidental use of the RGC-3 whilst unattended. While the RGC-3 has been set to Datahold, the keypad will not function and the displays will be blank. If the machine axis is moved, DISPLACD (displaced) will appear in the display window. The RGC-3 will continue to record all the encoder movement and will update the display once Datahold is cancelled. If a key is pressed, TOUCHED (touched) will appear in the display to alert the operator that access to the data entry has been attempted. In the set-up routine, press the [abs/inc] key until SLP ON is displayed. Press [Yo] and the choice of SLP OFF appears. Pressing the [Yo] key toggles between SLP ON and SLP OFF. Select SLP ON if the Datahold facility is required, otherwise select SLP OFF. When selection is made, press the [abs/inc] key to store the change and move forward to the next option. 3.3 Axis resolution IMPORTANT: The axis resolution of the RGC-3 must be matched to the resolution of the encoder system being used. The available options are: 10 µm, 5 µm, 2 µm, 1 µm, 0.5 µm, 0.2 µm, and 0.1 µm In the set-up routine, press the [abs/inc] key until Ar (Axis resolution) is displayed. The display will show the last selected resolution e.g. Ar Press the [Xo], [Yo] or [Zo] key to change the resolution for each axis as required. When selection is made press the [abs/inc] key to store the change and forward to the next option. 3.4 Display resolution This option allows the display resolution to be selected. The values are the same as detailed for the axis resolution, noting that the smallest available increment is limited to that selected for the Axis resolution. In the set-up routine, press the [abs/inc] key until dr (display resolution) is displayed. The display will show the last selected resolution e.g. dr Press the [Xo], [Yo] or [Zo] key to change the resolution for each axis as required. When selection is made press the [abs/inc] key to store the change and forward to the next option. 3.5 Direction The direction option allows the direction for each axis of travel to be changed. For example, if after installation the X axis is measuring positive from right to left, this option can be used to change the direction so it measures positive from left to right. In the set-up routine, press the [abs/inc] until DIR (direction) is displayed. Each axis display will show 0 or 1. Pressing each axis key [Xo], [Yo] or [Zo] reverses the counting direction for each axis. When the RGC-3 is displaying the desired choices, press [abs/inc] to save the settings and continue to the next option. 3.6 Radius/diameter This option allows any axis to be selected to display measurements at a two times (x2) factor. This is used on turning applications to display part diameter rather than part radius. In the set-up routine, press the [abs/inc] key until RAD or DIA is displayed. Pressing each axis key [Xo], [Yo] or [Zo] switches between radius and diameter reading for that axis. When the RGC-3 is displaying the choices to be used, press [abs/inc] to save the settings and continue to the next option. 3.7 Linear error compensation This option allows a constant correction factor to be applied to the measurements, with the resultant displayed. This factor is expressed in Parts per Million (PPM) Calculating Linear error compensation To establish a multiplication factor, check the measurements displayed by the RGC-3 axis against a known distance or against a laser calibration system. The multiplication factor should be established whilst in operational mode and NOT in the set-up routine. For example, if the RGC-3 displays mm against a known (actual) distance of mm, the correction factor to be applied is: 0.005/500 x 1,000,000 = 10 PPM If the RGC-3 displays over the same reference distance, the correction factor would be: /500 x 1,000,000 = -10 PPM WARNING: Once the multiplication factor has been entered for an axis, all measurements will be adjusted accordingly. To disable this adjustment, a compensation factor of zero must be entered.
7 3.7.2 Setting linear error compensation In the set-up routine, press the [abs/inc] key until LC (linear compensation) is displayed. The display will show LC 0 or the last correction factor entered. To insert or change a correction factor, select the axis and enter the factor to be used. For example, to apply a factor of 200PPM to the X-axis, press the following [X] [2] [0] [0] [ent]. If the unit is displaying measurements less than the actual measurement, enter a positive compensation factor. A factor of 200 PPM means the displayed value is the measurement x When the RGC-3 is displaying the correct factor, press [abs/inc] to save the settings and continue to the next option. 3.8 Signal failure detection This option allows the user to activate/deactivate the signal failure detection circuit. A signal failure is displayed when incremental channels are 3-stated, indicating an encoder error or open circuit condition. In the case of Renishaw encoders, 3-stating is asserted when the signal level drops to an unacceptable level. Once a signal failure has been registered, the RGC-3 will display SIG FAIL alongside the relevant axis. To reset the signal failure detection circuit, the relevant [Xo], [Yo] or [Zo] button must be pressed. It should be noted that the reason for the signal failure should be addressed to prevent an immediate reoccurrence of this state. To leave the set-up routine, press the concealed key, R of RGC-3. 4 Standard functions 4.1 Incremental When the RGC-3 is set to incremental mode, it can be used to display each new position relative to the last. This is also known as point to point use. On setting to incremental, each axis can be reset by pressing [Xo], [Yo] or [Zo]. As an alternative to resetting the axes, the co-ordinates can be entered relative to the current incremental position. Each time the incremental mode is selected, the RGC-3 display will show the position relative to the last reset position whilst in the incremental mode. Operator steps Set to incremental mode Reset axes Enter the co-ordinates of a position, e.g. X100, Y50, Z25 Keystrokes [abs/inc] [Xo] [Yo] [Zo] [X] [1] [0] [0] [ent] [Y] [5] [0] [ent] [Z] [2] [5] [ent] Axes display X Y Z X Y Z Absolute When the RGC-3 is set to absolute mode, it will display the position relative to an established datum point. When the display is reset in absolute mode, the current position of the machine is set as the datum point. All absolute positions will be measured relative to this datum. To set the datum, position the machine at the point intended to be established as the datum and then reset any or all of the axes, whilst in the absolute mode. Operator steps Set to absolute mode Reset axes Keystrokes [abs/inc] [Xo] [Yo] [Zo] Axes display X Y Z 0.000
8 4.3 Data pre-set To pre-set an axis dimension the following steps are required. Operator steps To enter a negative dimension for the X axis Keystrokes [X] [±] [1] [9] [.] [6] [ent] Axes display X Dimensions can be entered in either the absolute or incremental modes. Pressing the [ce] key will clear the entered values. 4.4 Units of measurement To change between millimetre and inch readings, press [in/mm]. The displayed data will be converted instantly. The LED beside the key indicates which mode is being used. When the RGC-3 is powered up it will display the unit of measurement set prior to power loss. 4.5 Reference mark registration To reference an axis to a reference mark, fi rst press and release the [ref] button and then the axis button to be referenced [Xo], [Yo] or [Zo]. The display will now show ref 0. It will start counting from zero after detecting a reference mark signal from the readhead. Note that the reference mark signal from Renishaw readheads is uni-directional and must be set-up to produce a repeatable signal in the desired direction. For further information on how to do this, please refer to the Renishaw readhead installation guide. 5 Cleaning Disconnect the unit from the power supply before cleaning. It is recommended that the unit be wiped over with a lint free cloth with a non-corrosive/non-abrasive cleaning fl uid. Do not use compressed air. 6 Troubleshooting Symptom Nothing happens when the unit is switched on. When the unit is switched on, the displays are frozen. The displays work, but reset from time to time without the keys being pressed. The displays work, but give erratic readings, the last digit jitters or the measurements jump to new fi gures unexpectedly. SIG FAIL appears in the display. The unit will not respond to any keys Solution Check that the RGC-3 is correctly connected to a working power source. Check the power lead is not damaged. Check the fuse. Note that if the fuse has blown, this suggests a fault with the power source, which must be corrected before the fuse is replaced (see section 2.3). Mains supply voltage is too low. Check that the power source is within the limits accepted by the RGC-3 (see section 1.2). Mains supply voltage is too low, or the power source has an intermittent fault. Check the power source as above. Check that all connections are good. Poor earth (ground) connection. Both the RGC-3 and the machine upon which it is installed must have proper earth connections (see section 2.2). This means that the unit is not receiving a proper signal from the encoder. Check that the encoder is set-up correctly indicated by a green LED from Renishaw readheads. Check that the encoder connection is good. Check that there is no damage to the connectors or to the encoder lead. If only one axis is displaying this message, connect the encoder from a working axis into the faulty axis. If the same message appears, the fault is likely to be in the RGC-3 and you should contact your local Renishaw service centre. NOTE: THE RELEVANT [Xo], [Yo] OR [Zo] KEYS MUST BE PRESSED TO REMOVE THE SIG FAIL MESSAGE. Switch the RGC-3 off and back on. Note you will not lose your current position by switching off and on as long as the encoder is not moved with the power off.
