ANALOG OUT EXT TRIGGER EXT CLOCK -64/2 shown with EP346 faceplate option. Overview The is a USB/DSP Function Module with embedded processor for DSP and real-time control capability. The 6U module has standard connections for analog input, analog output, trigger and clock. The module runs completely separate from the PC to avoid Windows latencies. Once your program is loaded on the module, it does not need host intervention and can run on its own. With 2 Mbytes flash memory the module can run automatically. The can continue to run, monitor and control data if the host PC becomes disconnected accidentally, ensuring the security of missioncritical applications. High-Performance Data Acquisition and DSP The s efficient hardware architecture lets you perform analog input, analog output and signal processing simultaneously. The memory is shared by the analog I/O and onboard processor (and intermodule communications). Each subsystem on the board has its own high-speed pathway in and out of memory, and each pathway has its own independent DMA controller. Sigma-Delta A/D and D/A Data Converters Analog input and output circuits feature advanced sigma delta converters for improved ac performance. Sigma-delta A/D converters offer the following advantages: Simultaneous sampling by independent A/D converters on each input (equivalent to Simultaneous Sample and Hold) Reduced noise and improved accuracy result from 64x oversampling on each input Elimination of errors due to aliasing and high frequency noise using the built-in "brick wall" digital filtering system (external anti-aliasing filters are not needed) Excellent low-level signal-to-noise performance improves dynamic accuracy on low-level signals Excellent differential linearity assures consistently accurate data conversion across the full input range. Sigma-delta D/A converters provide automatic interpolation between data points for smoother output. Analog Inputs Built-In Channel Expansion Capabilities The has eight 24-bit differential inputs with an input signal range of +/- 10 volts. The resolution of 24 bits allows LSB recognition down to signal levels of +/- 5nV. All eight A/Ds are clocked at the same time for simultaneous sampling. External clock and triggers on the module allow you to add additional modules, in a master/slave configuration. Program the first module to provide the master clock and synch up additional modules to expand up to 64 simultaneously sampled channels. Analog Outputs The features two 24-bit delta sigma analog outputs, clocked with the A/D conversion clock. The module also features software selectable 20kHz filters on the D/A outputs. Digital I/O The features 24 digital I/O lines: 8 inputs, 8 outputs and 8 programmable as digital I/O or up to three counter timer functions. Counter Timer Functions Three 32-bit user counter/timers available with up/down capability for all your counter/timer applications. User Connections The has two 68-pin standard connectors for the Analog I/O, DIO and C/T. A single USB cable ships with each module. An AC to DC power supply is available separately. USB 2.0 Compatibility The module is both USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 compatible. USB 2.0 extends the speed of the connection from 12 Mbps on USB 1.1 up to 480 Mbps on USB 2.0, providing an attachment point for nextgeneration peripherals which complement higher performance PCs and user applications. USB 2.0 is both forward and backward compatible with USB 1.1, resulting in a seamless transition process for the end user. In fact, USB 2.0 uses the same cables and connectors as USB V Isolation Protects Your Data Because USB modules reside outside the computer, they are susceptible to groundspikes. These spikes can cause system crashes and may even cause permanent damage to your computer. A Complete DSP Programming Environment The can be used by developers, programmers and high-level applications software package users. A developer is able to use the with TI Code Composer under Windows 2000 or XP. Software Overview The host software for the provides a means of installing and configuring the from the host, tools for downloading and executing DSP programs, an API for writing host programs to communicate with running DSP programs, an API for building utilities, diagnostics, etc, and sample programs that use the two APIs. Host Communications Library The library provides the API for the so that you can write host-based programs for communicating with the. In addition, it allows other software components to easily be layered on top of it later. When you are writing your own DSP code for the with TI Code Composer, you may need to write a corresponding PC-based program that communicates with the. To do this, you need a host communication library that you can call from your host-based program. This library hides the details of the communication channel between the program and the DSP chip. In the case of the, the library hides the details of the USB interface and provides a stream-based model of communication in its place. This API meshes with the DSP BIOS model, which you may be using to write your DSP programs on the other side of the USB link. Application Programming Interface An Application Programming Interface (API) for Windows is provided with the and supports stream, message, and low level I/O to/from the board. The API is broken into four categories of functions - Board, Channel, Messaging and Hardware functions. The typical user program will rely on only the Board and Channel functions. The last two categories are typically very specialized user programs. Board Function - Provides facilities for opening, closing, resetting boards and downloading programs. These functions operate on an entire board rather than a subsystem within the board. Channel Functions - The channel functions are operations on a single communication channel between a program running on the host and a program running on the. At any given time, multiple channels can be open between the host and a. Each of these channels is a unidirectionalbuffered byte stream Messaging Functions - The messaging functions give access to the lower level host-to- messaging system. Hardware Functions - These functions provide the lowest level access to the hardware. Utility Programs The ships with two utility programs: Download Program A command line program that downloads a named COFF file to the DT These binary image files are the compiled output files from Code Composer. Diagnostic Program A command line program that will run a series of diagnostic tests on the board and verify its basic functionality. DSP Example Programs Provided with the are several simple example programs that illustrate how to program the board via the Code Composer cross development environment. These programs illustrate how to access a single major subsystem or feature of the board. Demo Program A demo program included with the shows the main features and highlights of the board. The program is a Code Composer project and a matching Visual Studio project. 5 Accessories There are many ways to configure the. The baseboard provides two 68-pin headers for all analog, digital, and counter functions. Standard cabling can be used to tie directly to the as seen in Fig 6. In addition, Data Translation offers two faceplate options to choose from. The EP346 faceplate connects to via 68-pin connectors as pictured in Fig. 6. The EP347 faceplate provides BNC connectors for analog input/output and, in addition, it features one 37-pin connector for digital I/O and two 25-pin connectors for analog I/O and counter timer functions.
