Connect the electrode BNC connector to the socket. 3. Lightly grease the O rings with the grease supplied, then slide the waterproof cover over the socket. Make sure the cover is lined up correctly with the socket. NOTE: Lightly greasing the cables will help removal of the connector cover in future. 4. Finger tighten the connector cap. 5. Repeat steps 1-4 connecting the phono connector to the socket. CAUTION: To avoid damaging the connectors always loosen the connector cap before removing the cover. Insert the batteries following the illustration. 3. Lightly grease the O ring seal, and replace the battery cover and hand grip.

2 Installation (continued) Fitting the Wrist Strap Controls Press & Release Press & Hold for 2 Seconds Program Menu The Program Menu allows you to set a calibration reminder interval; date and time; manual temperature compensation; calibration buffers; concentration standards; ISE (ion selective electrode) slope value; isopotential point and concentration units. You can only enter the Program Menu if the current measurement has endpointed. Press and hold the mode key for 2 seconds to access the Program Menu - appears. Press mode to scroll through the options. Press read to exit the Program Menu at any time. If you press read when a value is flashing that value will not be entered. When the selected time has elapsed the calibration reminder symbol will appear. The 315 has a preset reminder interval of 1. Change the interval using and. Press mode to enter the value and move on. Time and date are displayed during calibration recall, and will be sent via the serial output. Time is shown on the main display, the date is shown on the lower part of the display. Set the time and date using and. Press mode to enter the value and move on. You can enter temperature manually between 5.0 and C. (An probe will override manual compensation.) The 315 has a preset temperature of 25 C. Use and to change temperature. Press mode to enter the value and move on. If you entered the Program Menu from mode (or mv mode), continue with the mode instructions. If you entered from concentration mode follow the concentration mode instructions mode You can select three of four calibration buffers. The buffers are grouped in sets (b = 1, b = 2, b = 3); select your required set first using and : set 1 = 7.000, 4.000, , set 2 = 7.000, 4.010, 9.210, set 3 = 6.860, 4.010, 9.180, Press mode to enter the set and move on.

Concentration mode You can select one of four preset slope values for 1 point calibrations (c = 1, c = 2, c = 3, c = 4). If you are not sure of your electrode type, or wish to do 2- (3, 4, 5) point calibrations, do not select a slope as the 315 will calculate the slope and use this value rather than the factory setting. c = mv/decade, e.g. for BF 4, Br, Cl, ClO 4, F, I, NO 2, NO 3, SCN 2 c = mv/decade, e.g. for CO 3, S 2 c = mv/decade, e.g. for Ag +, H +, K +, Na + +, NH 4 c = mv/decade, e.g. for Ca 2+, Cd 2+, Cu 2+, Pb 2+, WH 2+ Select your required slope using and, press mode to enter the value and move on. You can enter the isopotential point (in mv) of your electrode. The range is 99 to +99 mv. The 315 has a preset isopotential point of 0 mv. Change the isopotential point using and, press mode to enter the value and move on. Press mode until the display reads 0.000, with the tenths digit flashing. Press or to change the tenths digit until the display shows 0.500, then press mode to confirm. The hundredths digit will flash. Press mode again, the display reads with the thousandths digit flashing, press mode again to enter value. Select concentration units from the following list: blank (no units), ppm, mg/g, mol/l, mmol/l, g/l, mg/l, eq/l, meq/l, %, ppt. The 315 is preset to blank (no units). Use or to change units, press mode to enter the units and move on Press read to exit the Program Menu. The decimal point flashes during sample measurement. When the electrode output has stabilized the stability indicator appears. Manual endpoint - press read to endpoint Auto endpoint - the 315 automatically endpoints. When you press cal the buffer or concentration standard you selected for cal 1 (Program Menu) is displayed for 2 seconds, and then the 315 starts measuring. If you want to use another buffer (choice of 3) or conc. standard (choice of 5) press cal again. Press cal repeatedly to exit calibration routine. The decimal point flashes during cal measurement. When the electrode output has stabilized the stability indicator appears. Manual endpoint - press read to endpoint Auto endpoint - the 315 automatically endpoints. When a calibration has endpointed you can press mode to display the absolute mv value and temperature of the buffer or standard; the display reverts to the buffer or standard and E 0 ( only) values, or the buffer or standard and slope values for a 2-(3, 4, 5) point calibration after 2 seconds.

5 Maintenance General The 315 requires very little maintenance. Occasionally wipe the meter with a damp cloth. The casework is made of ABS/PC which is known to be affected by some organic solvents, including toluene, xylene and methyl-ethyl-ketone. It is good practice to wipe away any spillages as soon as they occur. Every six months inspect and lightly grease the socket seals, and connector and battery O rings with the grease supplied. Replace the O rings if damaged. CAUTION: To prevent permanent damage care should be taken to prevent liquid entering the 315 when fitting electrodes or replacing batteries. If it does, remove the batteries and allow the meter to dry before using. Replacing the Batteries Replace batteries as soon as the low battery indicator appears. To prevent data loss always turn the 315 off using the mode key before replacing the batteries. See the Installation section for details on installing batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries. NOTE: Check the Program Menu settings after changing the batteries. Electrode Maintenance Refer to the electrode product insert for full details on maintaining your electrode. Check mv reading for 7 buffer is 0 ± 30 mv. If it is not, clean or replace the electrode. Err 2 - slope out of range in mode Slope less than 85.0%, or not + Err 2 calculable. Electrode needs cleaning, conditioning or replacing. Check correct buffers are used. + Err 2 Slope more than 105.0%. Check calibration buffers. NOTE: Where 0 mv/ unit = 0%, and mv/ unit = 100% Err 2 - slope out of range in concentration mode Check that for a decade change in concentration, the mv reading is between +10 to +65 mv, or -10 to 65 mv, depending on the valency and charge of the species being measured. If it is not, check the concentration standards and clean, condition or replace the electrode. Err 3 - buffer outside temperature limits buffers must be between 5 C and 50 C for accurate temperature compensation. Displayed (out of range) Check electrode is connected and immersed in sample. Check wetting cap is removed. Data Entry Errors Date flashes and reverts to previous setting - invalid date entered. Entered temperature value changes to 5.0 or the 315 will not accept values outside this range. Dashes displayed instead of buffer or standard value during calibration buffer or standard set up - that buffer or standard has already been selected for a cal point. Cal points must have different values. Using the Memory Entering a Reading into Memory The 315 can store up to 50 endpointed results. Press M when the measurement has endpointed. M 1 is displayed (or M 2 to M 50 if readings have already been stored). M 50 indicates the memory is full.

6 Using the Memory (continued) Recalling Memory You can only recall stored memories if the current measurement has endpointed. Press R - the last stored memory is displayed. Press or to scroll through memories. RM 1 to RM 50 indicates which memory is being displayed. M 0 indicates no memories stored. Clearing the Memories Press R then press or until M C is displayed. Press mode to clear the memories, M 0 indicates the memories have been cleared (press read to exit without clearing the memories). Using Continuous Measurement Mode In normal mode, the 315 will auto-off 10 minutes after the last key press, whether the unit is measuring or has endpointed. If you select continuous measurement mode, the 315 will not auto-off. To select continuous measurement mode press and hold M for 2 seconds. Using Continuous Data Transfer Mode In continuous data transfer mode readings are sent to the data output approximately every second. If the measurement endpoints (manually, or using auto endpoint) data transfer stops. If you recall memories all stored readings are output, (from the first to the last stored). To select continuous data transfer mode press and hold R for 2 seconds. If you want to use this mode to monitor continually, you also need to select continuous measurement mode. To maintain continuity of sample readings calibration data is not output in continuous data transfer mode. Interfacing Serial Output The 315 can interface with computers, printers and other RS232 compatible devices. The RS232 Interface Kit (Cat ) converts data from the 6 pin socket to RS232 format. Type of communication - uni directional, baud rate 1200, data format - 1 start bit : 8 data bits : 1 stop bit : no parity Data is sent to the output socket at measurement endpoint (manual or automatic), calibration recall and memory recall. Interfacing (continued) To use the output to monitor continually, you need to select continuous measurement mode and continuous data transfer mode. Recorder Output An output is available, via the Recorder Cable (Cat ), for all modes. The polarity of the output is the same as the polarity of the input signal. Approximate Recorder Outputs - Output follows display and provides approximately 60 mv output/ unit. This value varies with changes in electrode slope. mv - Output follows display, i.e. output varies from to mv. Concentration - Output depends on valency and charge of ionic species being measured, and is typically approximately ± 60 or ± 30 mv/decade. Recorder output is not available for temperature. 315 Data Socket CAUTION: The 315 does not meet IP67 when the waterproof output socket seal has been removed. Operating Hints protective ground (0V) recorder output Remove the wetting cap from the end of the electrode and the rubber cap from the fill hole (if fitted) before using the electrode. Calibrate using buffers or standards with values that bracket that of the sample. With a new electrode, or after maintenance, we recommend you use a buffer close to 7 for the first calibration point. For greatest accuracy, buffers or standards and samples should be at the same temperature. Do not use solutions after the expiration date. When transferring the electrode from one solution to another, rinse it with distilled water and blot dry with tissue paper - do not wipe the electrode as this may cause polarization and slow response. When you select the calibration buffers/ standards (Program Menu), set the buffer or standard you will use most frequently for 1-point calibrations as cal 1, the one you will use most frequently for the second calibration point as cal 2, and so on. Calibrate in concentration mode using the units you want for sample measurement. Changing the units does not change the reading; e.g. the 315 does not convert from ppm to mmol.
