2 Interfacing with the HD44780 LCD Controller pg. 2 The following are the most commonly performed tasks; for further information, refer to the HD44780 datasheet at Sending commands 1. Set up data bus lines with proper high/low logic levels. Refer to the Instruction Set (pg. 3) for commands, refer to the Character Set (pg. 4) for character encoding. 2. Set RS and R/W pins. RS = 1 for reading or writing characters, 0 for all other commands. R/W = 1 for reading address counter or character data, 0 for all others. 3. Raise E pin, then lower it. Falling logic level triggers the controller to read and execute commands. 4. Delay before transmitting next command. 1.64ms for Clear Display and Move Cursor To Home, for all other commands. Note: If using 4-bit data bus, commands are sent in two parts. Perform steps 1-4 with upper 4 bits of data bus, then repeat with lower 4 bits. Initializing the display 1. Send Set Function command to choose 4-bit or 8-bit data bus. 2. Send Display On/Off, Cursor Control to turn display on, choose cursor visibility/blink settings. 3. Send Clear Display command to send cursor to home position and clear display. 4. Send Set Entry Mode command to set display shifting/cursor movement options. Typically I/D = 1, S = 0, for text written left-to-right and non-shifting display. Creating your own characters 1. Send Set CG RAM Address command with an address between 0 and 7; this will be the code to write this character. 2. Send each line of the character, from top to bottom, as eight Write Data commands. Each Data Bus bit from 0 to 5 corresponds to a pixel within the line. (See figure at right.) 3. The new character can now be written like any built-in character using the code set in step 1.
