2 Final note this fiscal year Dear All, It has been a pleasure serving IBPSA-USA, Houston Chapter. It s time to pass on the baton. I would like to extend my acknowledgement to the people who helped starting this chapter in 2009: Greg Tinkler and Richard Stalnaker at RLB, David McLean and Norman Cogner at CHPA, Prof. Larry Degelman, TAMU. You will see a more dynamic face to the chapter in the next meetings. We have found an excellent partner in Houston Revit User s Group. We are looking forward for more partnerships with other professional groups. The last year saw three new regional chapters of IBPSA established in Boston, Washington DC and Philadelphia taking up the regional count to seven. Building Performance Simulation is a vast field and it gives me great pleasure to see more and more professionals and students from architecture and engineering interested in the subject. Our goal remains to encourage the budding talents and improve the standard of professional service. Please send in your nominations for the following posts to kapilu@kirksey.com : President, Vice-President, Treasurer Secretary. Looking forward to an exciting year ahead, Kapil Upadhyaya. President, IBPSA-USA Houston Chapter. 2 IBPSA-USA, Houston Chapter, Quarterly Publication Volume 2c, Aug 2010
3 JOB SEARCH Seeking energy-efficiency engineers CLEAResult ( is an energy-optimization firm that designs and implements programs to help utilities manage load growth by helping customers identify energy-savings opportunities and implement energy-efficiency improvements. We are currently hiring seasoned energy-efficiency engineers with commercial & industrial energyauditing experience. The openings are located in Houston, Austin, and Little Rock. (We do offer a relocation package.) Among other things, qualified engineers should have experience conducting building energy-use audits/analyses, identifying energy-efficiency opportunities, using energy-simulation/modeling tools such as DOE- 2/eQUEST, performing energy-savings calculations, and developing measurement and verification (M&V) plans. P.E. and/or C.E.M. certification is preferred. These are full-time positions with full benefits. If interested, please contact James Hatheway at (512) or jhatheway@clearesult.com COMNET update The next set of Energy Modeling guidelines are already ways ahead in development. The adoption may affect modeling procedure for LEED, Federal tax deductions and Code Compliance. See latest updates: 3 IBPSA-USA, Houston Chapter, Quarterly Publication Volume 2c, Aug 2010
4 Journal of Building Performance Simulation The Journal of Building Performance Simulation ( < ) is the Official Journal of the International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA). Individual members of the IBPSA can subscribe to Journal of Building Performance Simulation < for just US$49 / 25 / 38. This special rate is applicable only to individual purchasers. See for ordering details. Building Research & Information CALL FOR PAPERS: Next Challenges in Energy Building Research Guest Editors: A.J. Summerfield, R.J. Lowe Building Research and Information will be publishing a special issue in 2012 entitled 'Next Challenges in Energy Building Research. There is much that the international research community needs to learn over the next decade as we face a step change in the demands placed upon research. This special issue is not about reporting specific findings from energy demand reduction projects, except where these are necessary to support a more general argument. Instead, it is an attempt to explore the role of research in supporting a transition to a low-carbon economy in the light of policy and existing and emerging technical options, the nature, objectives and culture of research, and the evolving relationships between research communities, funders and stakeholders. This call for papers seeks the submission of abstracts ( words) responding to the issues below. The abstracts must make clear how the research, evidence and lessons from the specific case provide a basis for the more general, overarching objectives of the special issue. Abstracts must be submitted by 15 March 2011 to the Editor in Chief: Richard Lorch richard@rlorch.net Selected abstracts will be developed into full papers and undergo double-blind refereeing. 4 IBPSA-USA, Houston Chapter, Quarterly Publication Volume 2c, Aug 2010
5 EVENTS IBPSA-USA, Houston Quarterly Meeting We will meet at AIA downtown on March 8th, 6:00pm. Agenda: Taking Advantage of BIM for Energy Analysis Presenter: Jason Bohning, EIT, BIM Technologies Manager Description of Presentation: I have spoken with a lot of engineers that are using Revit to produce construction documents, but are not using it to create their energy models. After a lot of trial and error, I have developed a method to get exactly the information I need out of Revit and into other energy analysis software programs such as Trane Trace, Green Building Studio and equest. This same approach can be used with two dimensional drawings on new or existing buildings for energy analysis. Don t stop at energy analysis. The same files can be used to model other aspects of the building. Please join me at the Houston Revit Users Group to discuss best practices for coordination between architects and engineers for energy analysis. Key Topics - Manipulate Revit files to get a usable gbxml file. - Understand which file types energy analysis tools use. - See what engineers need to perform energy analysis. - Learn how to turn 2-D drawings into a usable model. - Discuss coordination between architects and engineers. Please coordinate with Dat Lien (DLien@tcadsys.com) if you would like to include questions on the topic. 5 IBPSA-USA, Houston Chapter, Quarterly Publication Volume 2c, Aug 2010
