2 Data Center Symposium All Things Electrical: MicroGrids, DC Systems, and Emergency Power for Ports Presentations and Speakers Sponsor Presentation Mission Critical MicroGrid Systems Justin Jurek Piller Power Systems Within this multiple case study review, Piller Power Systems will introduce what MicroGrid systems are, how they differentiate from distributed generation, and review the design and operation of some resilient mission critical MicroGrid systems that have been operating for years. Among the facilities to be reviewed will be an island grid in a remote area outside of Dubai, a CHP plant servicing loads at a semiconductor plant in Germany, a fuel cell system servicing a datacenter in the USA, and a biopharmaceutical manufacturer in the USA utilizing a CHP plant to supply their manufacturing and IT loads. In each case, the load is mission critical and cannot be exposed to power quality disruptions or outages without incurring millions of dollars of financial losses. About the Speaker Justin Jurek is responsible for developing new project opportunities for Piller in the mission critical marketplace. He provides both sales and application engineering support in the use and implementation of Piller s rotary UPS and rotary power stabilizer system solutions to help end users realize robust, resilient, power supply systems. DC Distribution in Critical Power Systems Aaron Hesse, PE, RCDD Coffman Engineers Critical power systems provide high quality continuous power to necessary facility loads. Their design is an integral component of operational uptime and reliability. Stationary battery arrays with DC power distribution is one approach to designing these systems. However, designing around DC is not without its challenges. Large battery arrays require special considerations when designing their support systems and spaces. From ventilating hydrogen gases to overcurrent protection in DC systems, basic design practices and lessons learned will be discussed. About the Speaker Aaron Hesse is a professional electrical engineer with Coffman Engineers. Coffman Engineers is a multidisciplinary engineering consulting firm with offices throughout the west coast. As a licensed engineer and BICSI Registered Communication Distribution Designer, Aaron provides a holistic perspective to the design of telecommunication and mission critical facilities.

3 Port of Long Beach Continuity Planning and the MATH came back the very next day. Doug Bors, PE President, Sophometrics A few years ago the State of California asked this question: What happens at the Port of Long Beach if a severe earthquake occurs in Southern California but leaves the Port in good repair? The Port asked a team of engineering firms to consider this question coincident with a Port wide audit of electrical distribution systems. California s question led to a collection of simplified reliability calculations that allowed the Port to consider a fleet of 75% portable and 25% fixed standby generators. Further, the engineering team identified specific implementation guidelines for the portable fleet by working backwards from assumptions identified from the calculation. The discussion will explore special electrical loads at the Port, including refrigerated cargo and ship to shore cranes, then walk through building a problem statement using Markov Chain events, and review the long range plans as they are being developed at the Port today. About the Speaker Doug Bors is a change agent helping our region s design and construction industry adapt to changing global competition. Doug founded Sophometrics to focus attention on collaboration and effective decision making to support planning and execution of complex and cutting edge projects. He is a speaker at regional and national events hosted by: AIA, NAIOP, IFMA, EnterpriseSeattle, NEEC, IEEE, U of W, EPRI, 7x24 Exchange, ASHE, & BiCSi. He was an instructor for the BetterBricks program. Doug graduated from MIT with two degrees, a BSEE (electrical engineering) and a BSAD (architectural design).
