10 Laser Peening Laser technology for x-ray lithography to print computer chips and image space objects was transformed into a commercial laser peening system Laser peening provides life extension for critical parts subject to intense conditions: - aircraft fuselages - turbine blades for jet engines and power generation - spent nuclear fuel containers - (golf clubs) MIC recently invented shaping metals and shape control with pre-stressing techniques - Boeing Company wing panels for aircraft LLNL alums Lloyd Hackel and Brent Dane of Metal Improvement Company (MCI), now a part of Curtiss-Wright Surface Technologies. 9

11 Digital Globe Strategic Defense Initiative work at LLNL led to Walter Scott founding DigitalGlobe as Worldview Imaging Corporation in 1992 In 2001 DigitalGlobe became the world s highest resolution commercial satellite imagery provider and delivers high-resolution imagery to Google Earth MDA now Maxar Technologies Ltd acquired DigitalGlobe for $2.4 billion in 10/5/
