2 ERMES Objectives 1. To coordinate research (and measurement programmes) for the improvement of transport emission inventories in Europe 2. To provide a Clearinghouse for European Mobile Emissions modelling Tools (CEMET), relevant Guidance and Training 3. To provide a reference point for Mobile Emission Modelling in Europe and maintain/improve International contacts

3 Research Coordination Keep an overview and a database of all measurement programmes going on in Europe by: National funded labs Universities, other Research labs European Commission (JRC) Overview of new needs, due to new technologies or new legislation and plan measurement programmes Coordinating EU programmes to cover as many aspects possible and to avoid duplication Harmonised Data for EU modelling tools

4 ERMES at work ERMES participants share data and research results on emissions tests and modelling work related to emissions from road vehicles A key ERMES outcome is the production and update of the emission factors that lead to state-of-the-art inventory models and to understand the impact of current technology

5 ERMES wider impact The modelling community at large needs accurate emission models to estimate baseline emissions and scenarios ERMES work is financed by MS projects and the Commission and updates the most widely-used publicly-available inventory models (COPERT, HBEFA)

6 ERMES costs and funding With the diverse set of technologies being deployed by the OEM to meet the AQ and climate change challenges, more data (expensive tests) will be needed to understand the impact of such technologies One way to secure funds is to raise ERMES image and impact vis-a-vis the funding agencies

7 ERMES image Website Communicate clearly the multiplier effect of the ERMES collaboration Give visibility to the current funders Rise awareness to other funders Who we are What we do Etc... Who we are: need to define Members vs Observers Funders

8 ERMES Members Collect measurement data on engine and vehicle emissions Manage the corresponding data base Developing structured and compatible emission simulation tools for emission simulation on single vehicle basis (eg. PHEM) macroscopic emission simulation for road networks and emission inventories (COPERT, HBEFA) Elaborate scenarios on future development of vehicle emissions

9 ERMES expertise ERMES members are in the position to: apply the emission models with the expertise of the team developing these tools use the existing infrastructure (personnel, test stands) to perform high level research use the existing infrastructure (personnel, test stands) to give consulting service for EC and member states, e.g. on emission legislation and transport policies (eg. MAC test procedure, HD OBD particle options, HD CO2 certification tool)

11 Next steps Distribute a draft collaboration agreement for comments of the interested parties Build the website and use it to raise the image and awareness of ERMES towards funding bodies and community at large First signatures and publication of the website in early 2013 Possibilities of common projects (FP8, LIFE+, COST, etc..)
