14 Two (and a half) types of Service Transport services (between the end-points) Handle what happens between the end points. Connect points. Simplified Definition of an end-point as a demarcation between the transport element of the service and whatever generates or receives the content that flows over that transport. Are typically agnostic to the content flowing over the transport service. Are typically technology specific to the underlying infrastructure (Layers 1-3: Optical, SDH, CE, RAN, IP) Traditional standard bodies: ITU, TMF, MEF Point Services Handle what happens at the end points (or mid-points) of the service. Assume connectivity/transport exists between the points. Are typically agnostic to the transport-technology. Certain apps have mechanisms to overcome transport performance issues. Mobile Services A world of its own. Strong linkage between application and underlying technology.
