3 Summary List of Enhancements in BSO v1.40 This document describes enhancements in Carrier Building System Optimizer (BSO) v1.40. It is intended for new users and those upgrading from BSO v1.3. A summary list of enhancements is provided here. Sections below describe the changes in greater detail. HVAC Equipment Modeling Heat Recovery Added options for modeling six types of heat recovery plants. DX Free Cooling Added non-integrated and integrated DX free cooling models for air-cooled chillers. Building Modeling Envelope Constructions - Revised the Building inputs to provide more extensive default choices for wall, roof and window assemblies, and to display details to help users understand the construction and performance of the selected wall, roof or window assembly type. Updated building defaults for occupant, lighting and electrical equipment heat gains. Calculation Reports Summary of Analysis Data Report Added peak building cooling and heating loads and equipment capacities to report. Utility Rate Modeling Remote Steam - Added a feature to allow remote steam prices to be defined for applications involving steam-driven absorption chillers. Updated EIA gas and electric rates to the latest available data (2014). Weather Data Added or updated weather data for 42 locations. Bug Fixes Corrected 13 problems affecting earlier versions of Building System Optimizer. Page 3 of 7

4 New Equipment Modeling Features 1. Heat Recovery from Chilled Water Plants Options were added for modeling six types of heat recovery plants. This is a special type of plant that combines all the equipment and controls for a chilled water cooling plant and a hot water heating plant, and the equipment to recover heat from the cooling system for use in meeting hot water heating loads. The new "Heat Recovery" plant type offers models for six different heat recovery schemes: Dedicated heat recovery chiller (DHRC) in parallel with cooling-only chillers Air-cooled chillers with heat recovery condensers Heat exchanger in condenser loop Dedicated heat recovery chiller in condenser loop Double-bundle chillers Chillers with desuperheaters 2. DX Free Cooling Added features for modeling DX free cooling in air-cooled chillers. For air cooled chillers equipped with DX free cooling, when the outdoor air dry-bulb is sufficiently lower than the leaving chilled water temperature, the compressors are turned off. A small refrigerant pump circulates refrigerant between condenser and evaporator to drive the cooling cycle. Condenser fans continue to operate. With this mode of operation, significant energy savings can occur at cool off-design conditions. BSO supplies typical default performance data when DX free cooling is selected. This modeling feature is useful useful when comparing standard chillers, chillers with DX free cooling, and/or chillers with heat recovery features. New Building Modeling Features 1. Construction Assemblies Revised the Building inputs to provide more extensive choices for wall, roof and window assemblies, and to display details of these assemblies to help users understand the construction and performance of the selected wall, roof or window assembly type. These default offerings have been expanded to include ASHRAE wall and roof assemblies by climate zone. These assemblies have performance which meets prescriptive performance requirements. Default offerings for windows include ASHRAE assemblies by climate zone which meet the prescriptive performance requirements for U-value and shade coefficient. In addition, further defaults are offered for common types of single-pane, double-pane and triple-pane windows, with clear, reflective and tinted glazings as well as low-e coatings. When a wall or roof assembly is selected from the drop-down list, the sequence of material layers and the overall U-value are now displayed for reference. When a window assembly is selected, the U-value and shade coefficient are displayed for reference. 2. Building Defaults Updated defaults for occupant, lighting and equipment heat gains to match current design practice and prescriptive requirements. Page 4 of 7

5 Calculation Reports Updated the Summary of Analysis Data report to include peak building cooling and heating load and peak cooling and heating equipment capacity. This data is provided for each equipment alternative included in an analysis. During BSO calculations the program automatically calculates the peak cooling and heating loads for zones, systems and plants in the building, and automatically determines HVAC equipment capacities. Reporting this data provides users with insight to the thermal size of the building and to capacities of the HVAC equipment serving the building. New Utility Rate Modeling Features Revised the Utility Rate inputs to add pricing information for remote steam. This feature was added for applications using chilled water plants with steam-driven absorption chillers. Weather Data Updated simulation weather data for 42 cities. All of the new and updated city files are automatically installed with the program. Simulation weather data was added for the following cities: Oranjestad, Aruba Nassau, Bahamas Bridgetown, Barbados Barranquilla, Colombia Cali, Colombia San Jose, Costa Rica Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic San Salvador, El Salvador St. George, Grenada Guatemala City, Guatemala San Pedro Sula, Honduras Tegucigalpa, Honduras Kingston, Jamaica Culiacan, Mexico Hermosillo, Mexico Mexicali, Mexico Tijuana, Mexico Torreon, Mexico Managua, Nicaragua Ljubljana, Slovenia Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago Doha, Qatar Page 5 of 7

6 Simulation weather data was updated for the following cities: Manama, Bahrain Porto Alegre, Brazil Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Chengdu, China Guangzhou, China Changsha, China Jinan, China Tianjin, China Wuhan, China Xian, China Tehran, Iran Abidjan, Ivory Coast Kuwait City, Kuwait Monterrey, Mexico Rabat, Morocco Muscat, Oman Dhahran, Saudi Arabia Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Durban, South Africa Pretoria, South Africa Dubai, United Arab Emirates Bug Fixes v1.40 corrects the following problems that existed in v1.30: 1. Plant Simulation I For very specific conditions the condenser water pump energy use for a chiller plant was incorrect. This error only occurred for a chiller plant which used a shared cooling tower and the plant control Sequenced with Part Load Chiller: High and Low Loads. 2. Plant Simulation II When simulating a hot water plant created in Equipment Inputs which used an air to water heat pump, the simulation halted and displayed an error cannot find tower record in database for record #0. As a result the simulation could not be completed. 3. Utility Rate Inputs I After defining a detailed electric rate with time of day pricing, the next time the data was edited the time of day pricing table would appear as empty in certain specific situations. Input data had been saved properly but was not displayed on the input screen. 4. Utility Rate Inputs II For a detailed electric rate, the Demand Charge Steps and Demand Charge pricing table sections of the input sometimes contained incorrect data that did not match data entered on the input screen. The entered data was correctly saved and used in calculations. Only the display on the input report was incorrect. 5. Utility Rate Inputs III In certain situations, an Error 13 Type Mismatch message appeared when generating the Utility Rate input report for a detailed electric rate using seasonal scheduling, time of day scheduling and a stepped rate with three kwh steps per season and time of day period. 6. Equipment Inputs I In specific circumstances when defining a changeover plant, the list of chiller types was incorrect. 7. Equipment Inputs II When launching the Equipment Wizard, a message Error 76: Path not found: Wizards\EW_AirSys_Base_05.2.gif occurred. This error occurred on a very limited number of computers. 8. Equipment Inputs III On the Equipment Alternatives window, the Help button displayed the wrong help topic. Page 6 of 7

7 9. Equipment Inputs IV - For an HVAC equipment alternative using an Induction Beam air system, the Airflow Ratio was omitted from the Equipment Inputs Report. 10. Equipment Inputs V A minor adjustment was made to condenser water pump mechanical and electrical efficiencies which are set automatically when the program performs simulations. 11. Building Inputs For a specific sequence of steps the Space Usage Type and outdoor ventilation input items appeared as blank on the Building Details screen. This occurred when editing a set of building inputs previously specified with an ASHRAE space usage type. Data was correctly saved when the data was originally entered. When data was later edited, the information was not correctly displayed. 12. Cost Calculations When calculating an HVAC scenario using a chilled water plant with steamdriven absorption chillers, the annual cost of steam energy use was reported as zero. 13. Help Menu Web Links Due to a recent update of the Carrier Commercial web site, the web links for items in the Help Menu no longer worked. Page 7 of 7
