3 ULISSE project Proposers: the USOC network with other research centres and companies engaged in space activities Objective: To pursue the exploitation of scientific data from previous and future space science experiments on ISS and on other space platforms, through: making available scientific data and knowledge from space experiments in the long term implementing services to maximize the exploitation of space experiments data increasing information exchange among different components of the scientific community, Space Agencies and public bodies. 6 ULISSE: Lessons Learned ULISSE has indicated that: development of service-oriented products should benefit of COTS that could offer a major reliability and cost-effectiveness research results may require further engineering before becoming exploitable for service deployment ULISSE has highlighted the need of: updating the data policy in view of its actual implementation in a user-oriented service deployment encouraging scientific community to share data and knowledge for re-use through an appropriate policy which promotes cooperation coordination with the international partners of the ISS programme and other stakeholders (as UN) for a coherent approach on the longterm preservation and re-utilization of ISS data 29/05/2012 All rights reserved 2012, Telespazio 6

7 ULISSE: community feedbacks Contacts with international organizations Director of Izmiran Institute of RAS expressed interest in cooperating for establishing large data repositories NASA and JAXA are establishing databases of scientific space data no platform like ULISSE has been already developed NASA and JAXA representatives have evaluated ULISSE a very interesting platform and are looking for possible cooperation with Europe to exploit this experience UN representatives are interested in exploiting ULISSE for educational programmes to promote space research and activities in developing countries 29/05/2012 All rights reserved 2012, Telespazio 7

8 CIRCE Project EC is starting the FP7 CIRCE project, aimed at pursuing the coordination of initiatives for the preservation and exploitation in the long term of scientific ISS data Main goal of CIRCE is: coordination with the international partners of the ISS programme and other stakeholders (as UN) for a coherent approach on: Contents and semantics Policies and user management Technologies Workflows and infrastructures Define a roadmap for the implementation of an international data e-infrastructure for ISS 29/05/2012 All rights reserved 2012, Telespazio 8

9 ULISSE Exploitation CNES and DLR (among the partners of ULISSE) have included data preservation and knowledge management in their national programmes ULISSE has also promoted a coordination with the HSO Directorate of ESA for the implementation of the ESA data policy ESA has received the mandate to implement the Long Term Data Preservation initiative (LTDP) in the domains of Earth Observation, Space Science and Microgravity, with the aim of: Consolidation of infrastructure for data and knowledge preservation and access. Consolidation of missions datasets, ingestion and operations of the related infrastructure and off-line services. Joint activities among ESA, Member States and international organizations for the definition of common preservation policies, system analysis and architectures definition, interoperability and standardization 29/05/2012 All rights reserved 2012, Telespazio 9
