3 Introduction This guide will help you understand all of the Information Mapper module s features and functionalities to efficiently create, edit and analyze how data is used within your organization. The Information Mapper originates from Sapient s excel-based Agile data governance methodology that allows you to map business processes, activities, tasks, critical data elements and physical sources. In recognition of the demand for a more robust tool, we created the webbased Information Mapper one of the modules within the Sapient Synapse platform. The Information Mapper allows you to add, edit, view and analyze all types of data requirements in a tabular form. Entities Card Editor At the forefront of Information Mapper is the Entities Card Editor. This is the primary location where you can capture, view and maintain data requirements. Each Level Column created in the Configuration Screen is represented as a Card in the Information Mapper. As an example, the figure below depicts three Level Columns as individual cards: Player, Team and Arena. The following seven functionalities describe how users can manage entities within the Cards: Add entity The following step-by-step instructions allow you to add a new entity to a Card: 1. Place your mouse on the Card that you want to add a new entity in. 2. Right click, and select Add entity. A pop-up window will appear. 3. Populate the following information: a. Name Indicate the name of the entity. b. Entity Type Indicate the nature of the entity. 2

4 4. Select OK. 5. The newly created entity will be visible on the Card. Remove entity This functionality allows you to remove an existing entity from a Card. 1. Click on an existing entity in the Card that you want to remove. 2. Right click, and select Remove entity. A pop-up window will appear to notify you that this action will permanently delete the entity and its relationship from Sapient Synapse. 3. Select OK to confirm. 4. The removed entity will no longer be visible. Link to entity This functionality allow you to create a relationship between two entities by linking them together. 1. Click on an existing entity in the Card that you want to link. 2. Right click, and select Link to entity. A pop-up window will appear. 3. In the search bar under Other entity, search for the second entity to be linked. The search uses keyword logic and is applicable across all Cards. 4. Select the entity that you are looking for. 5. Select OK. 3

5 6. You can verify that the entities are linked by using the filter or by viewing the relationships in the Context Pane (Relationships) section, which is outlined later in this guide. Unlink from entities This functionality allows you to unlink all relationships for a selected entity. See Context Pane (Relationships) if you want to unlink an individual relationship between two entities. 1. Click on an existing entity in the Card that you want to unlink. 2. Right click to select Unlink from entities. A pop-up window will appear to notify you that this action will unlink all relationships to other entities. 3. Select OK to confirm. 4. You can verify that the relationships are unlinked by using the filter or by viewing the relationships in the Context Pane (Relationships) section. View in Data Workbench This functionality offers you a shortcut to go directly from the Information Mapper to the Data Workbench for a selected entity: 1. Click on an existing entity in the Card that you want to view in the Information Mapper. 2. Right click to select View in Data Workbench. 3. This action takes you to the Tree graph as a default. View Details This functionality shows a pop-up expansion of the entity along with its details. 1. Click on an existing entity in the Card that you want to view in the Information Mapper. 2. Right click to select View in Data Workbench. 4

6 3. A pop-up window will show the entity, its attributes and relationships. In the same window, you can access the audit log of the selected entity. Clone entity This functionality allows you to duplicate an existing entity along with its attributes and relationships. 1. Click on an existing entity in the Card that you want to clone. 2. Right click to select Clone entity. A pop-up window will appear to notify you that this action will clone the selected entity. 3. Select OK to confirm. 4. The cloned entity will appear right below the original entity and have {CLONE} attached to its name. Move to other column This functionality allows users to move an existing entity from one Card to another Card. 1. Click on an existing entity in the Card that you want to move. 2. Right click to select Move to other column. A pop-up window will appear. 3. Select the target column to move the selected entity. 4. Select OK. 5. The entity will be visible on the new target Card. Filtering Sapient Synapse has the ability to filter data conditions so you can highlight information in the Cards that only meets the specified conditions. You can filter data conditions by clicking on the blank area on the left hand side of an entity. In the following example, Boston Celtics has been selected as a filter shown by the blue dot, while the corresponding relationships connected to the Boston Celtics are highlighted by the gray dots. To add an additional filter, click on one of the gray dots to reduce the amount of highlighted data. You are able to add as many sets of conditions to the entities as you would like. If you select an entity and the gray dots do not appear, there is not a relationship to that entity. 5

7 Context Pane Sapient Synapse has a separate area for you to view additional information, attributes and relationships of the entity. This Context Pane can be broken into three sections. The first section is the selected entity and the Card, which are represented as Lebron James and Player, respectively, in the example below. The second section is Attributes. The third section is Relationships. 6

8 Attributes Sapient Synapse enables you to define attributes within the Configuration Templates section (See the Domain Configuration user guide). After the attributes are defined and linked, they will appear in the Context Pane Attributes section for you to add or edit information for each entity. You can add or edit the information by clicking on the line of the attributes. To save, click away from the line. Relationships Sapient Synapse allows you to create relationship types and links between entities. The Context Pane Relationships section is where you can view the relationships that are created. In addition to this view, you have three additional functionalities that you can use. Right click on an entity to display these functionalities as shown in the following example: Unlink This functionality allows you to unlink an individual relationship between two entities. 7

9 1. Click on an existing entity in the Relationship pane that you want to unlink. 2. Right click to select Unlink. A pop-up window will appear to notify that this action will unlink the selected relationship. 3. Select OK to confirm. 4. The entity will disappear from the Relationship pane along with a message indicating that the selected entity is now unlinked. View in Information Mapper This functionality offers you a shortcut to move directly from the Relationship pane to the Information Mapper for a selected entity. 1. Click on an existing entity in the Relationship pane. 2. Right click to select View in Information Mapper. 3. This action takes you to the Card where the selected entity resides. The selected entity is highlighted in gray. View in Data Workbench See the Entity Card Editor View in Data Workbench section above. Details View In Entity Card Editor View Details section, you can zoom in on an entity, its attributes and its relationships. In this section, you can access that same functionality by clicking on the icon. 8
