1 Microtrategy 7 CHTR 1 Getting tarted with C C T Microtrategy 7 is the latest generation Microtrategy product suite. This document is intended to introduce the salient Microtrategy 7 features and capabilities, and provide a reference for accessing information addressing specific tasks for identified users and purposes. 1RWHÃn the context of user-centric information, Microtrategy comprises three primary components: Microtrategy Desktop enables all tasks related to report creation. Microtrategy Web includes all the functionality necessary for report display and manipulation in a web environment. Microtrategy ntelligence erver provides the means for implementing virtually all Microtrategy 7 system capabilities. ystem overview The Microtrategy 7 system architecture blurs distinctions between Web and Windows client interfaces, and between analytical processing capabilities of different database types. Tasks associated with database management, as well as those related to report design, creation, and use, are greatly facilitated by the tools that Microtrategy 7 makes available. The paragraphs that follow address the users identified for the MicroTrategy 7 product family, as well as the functions associated with each. 3

C C T 1RWHÃThe user interface of all Microtrategy Desktop products adheres to the format and behavior of Windows T, and the user documentation supporting those products reflects this fact. t is expected, therefore, that you be familiar with the fundamentals of Windows T user interfaces before using a Microtrategy Desktop product or consulting the user documentation associated with it. Users and tasks The content of this information unit is intended for all Microtrategy 7 product users. These users have been identified as follows: analyst: accesses, displays, and modifies reports. Generates report requirements for analysis purposes. May receive information via such devices as alphanumeric pagers, fax machines, and . s not required to understand how data is gathered or delivered. report designer: uses objects provided by Microtrategy Desktop to create grid and graph reports for decision-support purposes. s not required to understand the dimensional model or the decision-support capabilities of the system. project designer: creates objects for analysis use. s familiar with the application model and the functionality of system tools. Documents and distributes pertinent findings to other users. Typically, accesses the decision support environment on a daily basis. administrator: installs and configures the decision support system, defines users and user groups, and assigns login accounts and privileges. Monitors, analyzes, and tunes the system to ensure the smooth and balanced operation of the decision support environment. developer builds customized applications that reflect enterprise-wide decision support requirements. Uses programming languages such as Visual Basic, Visual C++, owerbuilder, Delphi, and the MicroTrategy 7 CM for this work. Tools Microtrategy Desktop provides an extensive array of tools for the creation, modification, and display of reports and associated data. These tools, which are available as options you can select once you have accessed a Microtrategy project, are classified as: editors, which have the same look-and-feel as typical Windows T displays, with similar menu bars, toolbars, and so on 4 Chapter 1 Getting tarted with Microtrategy 7

wizards, which allow you to define or modify certain report components, either by selection or by entering data through a series of option pages, hiding much of the complexity that would otherwise be present in report generation dialogs, which can be either stand-alone or part of an editor or wizard, and permit you to provide, through data exchanges, specific information needed by the system C C T nvironments f you are a Microtrategy 7 product user, you work in either a Microtrategy Desktop environment or a Microtrategy Web one. Both offer high scalability, security, and functionality. Following are descriptions of the salient features and function of each. 0LFUR6WUDWHJ\Ã'HVWR Microtrategy Desktop fully exploits the system functionality provided by Windows T. When you access the system, Desktop provides the entire range of projects and project components to which you have access authorization, and allows you to select objects on which you can work. s you select project components, you immediately have available functionality for: project creation, duplication, and upgrading data warehouse browsing project schema modification (based on existing projects) attribute and fact creation system-wide searching These functions are implemented through the editors, wizards, and dialogs listed under Tools, above. 0LFUR6WUDWHJ\Ã:H Microtrategy Web, aside from providing an easy-access, low-cost environment for report display and handling, offers a number of unique features, including: simplified project and account setup and maintenance system-load balancing through the use of multiple, clustered servers a simple, highly intuitive user interface the capability to display very large reports the capability to display multiple reports on a single document ystem overview 5

3 dialog box CHTR 3 The earch for bjects :KDWÃLVÃLW" The earch for bjects dialog box is a tool you can use to search for either a specific object or a group of objects meeting certain criteria. To perform a search, you use a special type of Microtrategy object called a search object. You can select multiple criteria to search for an object (for example, you can look for objects according to their type, and the date on which they were last modified, and their owner(s)). The larger the number of criteria you use for searching, the more restricted the result of your search becomes, and the smaller the number of objects meeting those criteria. T R F C +RZÃFDQÃ,ÃDFFHVVÃLW" You can access the earch for bjects dialog box directly from the Microtrategy 7 primary window by selecting earch for bjects from the Tools menu. :KDWÃFDQÃ,ÃGRÃZLWKÃLW" You can use the earch for bjects dialog box to perform searches based on one or more of the following criteria: object type date of object creation or modification object name and location objects that contain the object you are searching for objects that the searched-for object contains object owner For a description of the procedures to follow when searching for an object, please refer to the following How Do...? topic: The earch for bjects dialog box 27

Usage T R F C The earch for bjects dialog box provides two options to initiate a search: Find ow generates a search based on parameters you have entered. When you use this option, the system shows a list of all the items meeting the criteria for those parameters. ew earch clears the contents of the current search. When you use this option, the system prompts you to confirm deletion before you initiate a new search. With the earch for bjects dialog box you can search for and select objects that meet specific criteria; this window lets you look for objects according to: name and location (for example Mid-tlantic, located in the folder Region ) type (for example ttribute, or Metric ) date (or time interval) on which they were created or last modified (for example, all objects modified between 03/22/99 and 04/14/99 ) other objects they contain (for example, all templates that contain the metric rofit ) other objects that contain them (for example, all metrics that are used by the template tore ales ) owner(s) (for example, dministrator, or John mith ) Following is a description of the contents and function of each tab. ame & Location searches ame & Location provides spaces where you can enter an object s name, description, and location, thereby allowing you to search for objects when you know their identity. 1RWHÃ You can perform a search using any one of the three identifiers in this tab ( name, location, or descriptiont ); however, single-criterion searches of this type may have an impact on performance, as the search can be extensive. 28 Chapter 3 The earch for bjects dialog box

Date searches Date offers several time-interval search criteria, thereby allowing you to search for objects when you know the time interval during which they were created or last modified. bject Type searches bject Types provides a list of all existing object types in a project, thereby allowing you to search for objects when you know their type. Contains searches Contains allows you to select objects by doing either of the following: a search for objects that use (or do not use) other objects of a certain type a search for objects that use one or more items in a list of objects. T R F C 1RWHÃ Contains objects of this type and Does not contain objects of this type are not mutually exclusive; you can use them simultaneously as search criteria. Contained By searches Contained By allows you to select objects by doing either of the following: a search for objects that are used by other objects of a certain type a search for objects that are used by one or more items in a list of objects 1RWHÃ Contained by any object of this type and ot contained by any object of this type are not mutually exclusive; you can use them simultaneously as search criteria. wner searches With the wner option you can select a search object when you know who owns that object. Usage 29

For information on the use of the earch for bjects dialog box, see the How Do section in this guide. For information on the use of the earch for bjects dialog box, see the related How Do help. T R F C 30 Chapter 3 The earch for bjects dialog box
