This section covers three main topics: Part A: The interface Part B: Searching in CDI entries metadata Part C: Ordering your observation data sets 1

2 A The interface A-1 Introduction The CDI quick search allows you to browse through the content of the database but, more important, narrow down on the observation data sets you want to have access to. The search interface is divided into 3 sections 1. The central section contains the results list. This list initially contains all observation data sets. 2. on the left side you can activate filters. This will help you to narrow down the results in the list to exactly find those observation data sets you wish to order. 3. Above the central section you will find several additional menu items, including show on Map, and the link to our ordering tool. All these sections and menu options are discussed below. A-2. Results list Initially, all available records have been selected and listed. You will only see the first 20 records in the results list. 2

3 1. The full meta details of the observation data set can be viewed by clicking the small (show) icon in the right hand column. 2. Above the results list tools are available for browsing through the results and for setting the length of the results list. You can set the length of the pane to 20, 100 or 1000 records at a time (Increasing the number of sets will make the application somewhat slower). 3. Use 'Next' and 'Previous' to browse through the total set of results. A-3: Additional menu options 1. These options are for ordering selected observation data sets. See part C 2. These options are related to Showing, exporting, storing and plotting your results. See part B ( B-2) 3

Searching the CDI entries metadata B-1 Narrowing down your result by filtering the data The number of available observation data sets is fairly large and growing, but you are probably only interested in a specific set. You can filter the data in 3 ways that can all be combined: Geographical box ( Where) Time period ( When) Other meta information about the set ( What + where) B-1.1 Geographical box Click on the globe to open the Geographical box. With this tool you can select observation data sets from a specific area on the map. In the box, first of all zoom in to the area where you want to draw a box: 1. Click on the Icon 2. Use your mouse pointer to draw a rectangle. After release of the mouse button the map will zoom in to the drawn rectangle 4

5 3. Now click the box icon and draw a rectangle in the area you want to select 4. After selection click on the search button All observation data sets found in the drawn rectangle or intersect with this rectangle are now selected in the results list. Please note that the upper-left and lower-right corner of the rectangle are shown in the query sequence. If you want to cancel the geographical query simply click on the cross next to the query to retrace your steps. When you add more filters this query sequence will get longer but you can always go back step by step 5

6 B-1.2 Time period With this tool you are able to select observation data sets from a specific ( collection) period Pick a start date and/or end date and click on 'Search'. Please note that the default dates are between 1 January and 31 December of the current year. If you only pick 6

7 a start date you will get all observation data sets collected between the start date and the current year. B-1.3 Filtering on other meta information With these filters you are able to select observation data sets on the type of data that has been collected, how it has been collected and by whom. You are also able to select sets based on the sea areas in which they were collected 1. Select a parameter, Discipline, instrument etc. 2. The number behind the parameter indicate the number of related observation data sets 3. Press More to get an extended list of parameters You are now able to filter out observation data sets adding more and more filters until you come to a specific selection of observation data sets. 7

8 Example: If you are looking for Single beam echosounding tracks in the Celtic sea you do the following Filter on Curve first: Remaining observation data sets: 4157 Now filter on Single-beam echo sounders. Remaining observation data sets: 527 Add the last filter by selecting the Celtic Sea. Remaining observation data sets: 85. 8

9 B-2: additional menu options 1. Timeseries off/on: add a time strip to each dataset to get an overview of the time period of the dataset: Time series OFF Time series ON 2. Export the meta data in the search result list to a CSV file which can easily be imported into an XLS sheet. You can either open or save the produced CSV file. 9

10 3. Save your query as a favorite or bookmark in your browser so you can reproduce your query at any time. Give your query a recognizable name before you store in it in your favorites. When you later look-up your bookmark you will see a dedicated URL which you also can share with colleagues to share your search profile. Note that the CDI database is actively maintained, so that the bookmark can result in other results over time. 4. Opens a summary of the selected datasets where you are able to further filter the result of the search. The filter options are: the organization hosting the data file (CDI partner), the organization which collected the data file (originator), the disciplines of the measurement parameters, the parameters, instrument, and year. Clicking on the + button will display the list of values present in the selected datasets. 10

11 Clicking on a value will open a new page containing the results containing that selected value. Requests can be made on that page or even further filtering using the Summary function on this button. This will help you further drill down to the desired data. 11

12 In the picture below, in the Per year box the year 2007 will be selected. This will display the data gathered in that year meaning only the datasets from 2007 were select out the total set of results. 12

13 You might had noticed in the pictures that the number of data files has reduced. This was achieved using the Summary functionality. This has allowed us to find only two datasets from the original large set. By clicking the button with the text Export above the filtering, you can export the current list of values for the current filters to a CSV file. This file can be downloaded. Below is how the CSV files looks as opened in Excel. 13

14 CDI V3 Help Quick Search 5. Show the result in a map window TOOLS 1. Zoom in: Zoom in on map. 2. Zoom out: Zoom out on map. 3. Pan: Pan the map in any direction 14

15 4. Identify: Click with your mouse on an item on the map and the detailed information will be shown in the result window 5. Distance measurement: After clicking on this button, click on the map and drag a line between the points you want to measure. Hold the left mouse button while you do this. At the top of the map (to the right of the coordinates) will be shown the distance between the points in kilometers. 6. Reset map: Zoom back out to the start screen. 7. Colophon: Open the colophon page in a new window. 8. Legend: Open the map legend in a new window. 9. Enlarge: Enlarge the map in a new window, to improve it for printing purposes. 10. Help: This help-section on the map functionalities. 11. Position: At the top-left of the map the location of the mouse pointer on the map will be shown. 15

16 LAYER CONTROL Layers can be switched on and off by activating the check boxes next to the layer names. The layers will immediately be activated. Perhaps you are not able to see all layers. You can also move layers up and down by using the arrows in the 2 right -hand columns. Press the expand button to show all layers Layer control is divided into two parts 16

17 1. In the top part you can switch on the layers showing all point, track or area data present in the database. 2. In the lower part you can switch on several additional layers containing standard geographical information. You can even add external layers with 'Add layer. The default layers are: Grid lines: Shows a geographical grid Regional sea : Shows the borders of the regional sea areas of the world Regional sea labels: Shows the names of the regional sea areas of the world Main sea : Shows the borders of the main sea areas of the world Main sea labels: Shows the names of the main sea areas of the world Bathymetry: Shows the bathymetry in 500 meter intervals and the 200 meter contour, derived from GEBCO. Blue Marble: shows a satellite images compilation of the topography of sea and land. World: Shows the coast lines (green area) The layer setting will be "remembered" in all further screens showing the map area within the application. Add layer With this option you can add external layers. Press Add layer to open a new window 17

18 You can select a registered WMS server in CDI or you can add your own WMS server. Please note that the layer from the new WMS server must be OGC compliant.. Press submit to select the WMS layer After having selected a WMS server you must select the layers you want to add to the layer list. You can add one or more (or all) layers from the left column. Selected layers are moved to the right column. Press 'Add layer' to copy these layers to the layer control box. 18

19 Switch on the layer(s) that you have added to your stack of additional layers. Please note that you can remove a layer that has been added through a WMS server by clicking on the 'waste basket' icon. 19

20 You can zoom to the selected observation data sets on the map and choose between showing all sets or just the sets in the results list. Please note that any extra map layer from an external WMS server that you might have added, will also be included in your stored query. 6. Hide map: Close the map window C. Ordering observation data sets C- 1 Collecting observation data sets for ordering First of all you need to Collect observation data sets for ordering (Add to basket) 1. You can tick the box next to a data set record in the results list to select it for ordering 2. You can extend the number of displayed set per page by selecting 20 / 100 or 1000 records per page 3. You can also select all records on the current page by ticking this box 20

21 4. Click on add to basket to add the selected records to your shopping basket. The number of selected observation data sets is shown in your cart You can continue to search other observation data sets and continue to add records to your cart until you are done. 5. You can now proceed to the ordering tool ( Proceed to check out). C-2: Ordering datasets C-2.1 Ordering and submitting requests First of all, please note that the ordering process is somewhat different for small ( < 500 sets) and large (>=500 sets up to maximum data sets per shopping basket) orders. For small orders the shopping basket list will display all order lines, while in case of large orders only the number of order lines is displayed which are to be processed in batch. When ordering datasets please note that sometimes access restrictions are in force on the data. You can see more information on these restrictions when you read the detail information about a data set Press Basket on the order button to open the actual order list ( or request list) and read the information carefully before you continue Let s assume that your order list is complete and you want to submit a request 21

22 Press "submit request list" to go to the next step. Let s assume you already have a user name and password and you are able to log into the system. In the next screen you can add a motivation of your request and select a Data format if you order less than 500 sets. If you order more than 500 sets your order will be submitted directly and you will go directly to the confirmation of your request list below. a) Your information 22

Submit your final request You should now get the following information: You will receive an with your order confirmation and a link to the RSM. Visit the personal order register (RSM) to track the processing of your request C-2.2 personal order register (RSM) Log into the RSM with your user name and password 23

24 You can now check the status of your order and if ready, download the data sets in standard formats. This is further explained in the RSM HELP section. C-2.3 Obtaining a registration from your NODC The first time you order data sets via the portal you need to register. After registration you will receive immediately by a user - password, while you will be considered as a Public user. Thereafter your national NODC will receive a message of your registration and in the coming days might alter your role(s) to make it more fit. The roles are used in the decision matrix in combination with the data access restrictions to decide whether your request is immediately processed or requires negotiation with the data provider. The second time you order you will not have to register but can directly login with your id and password. 24
