BMC Client Management/Footprints Asset Core: How to populate Location Field using IP Range
Method Most of the time, it s possible to identify location just by checking IP range. This document explains how to populate location field based on IP range. Create a new custom inventory object type. In our example, we call it «Sites». Assign that custom inventory type to master.
Create a mapping Location IP Range. In this custom inventory, Instance Name = IP Range ( IP address starting with ). Instance Name is a Primary Key, any Instance Name entry must be unique. Location can appear multiple times in Site column. Create triggers In order to have «Location» updated when a device uploads an identity or an administrator updates Sites custom inventory, we need triggers.a trigger is a DB object running on event. At the bottom of this document, an SQL script create necessary objects. This script has been designed for postgresql DB. If you want to use it with SQL Server or Oracle, you will have to adapt syntax. Before running script, you ll have to replace 2 strings in it. o Run a query as follows : select ot.dbtablename, ota.attrcolumn from objecttypeattrs ota, objecttypes ot where ot.objecttypeid = ota.objecttypeid and ota.attrname = 'Site' and ot.objecttypename = 'Sites' and ot.objecttypeclass = '_DB_OBJECTTYPCLASS_CUSTOMINVENTORY_' o In script, replace «CustInv_ObjType_6116» by value from dbtablename column and «ATTR_597127» by value frome attrcolumn column.
SQL script CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION find_sitename(character varying) returns varchar as $$ DECLARE DevID INTEGER; SiteName VARCHAR; CustTable VARCHAR; ColumnName VARCHAR; cpt record; txtreq text; txtreq :='select dbtablename as v from objecttypes where objecttypename = ''Sites'' and objecttypeclass = ''_DB_OBJECTTYPCLASS_CUSTOMINVENTORY_'';'; IF LENGTH (CustTable) > 0 THEN CustTable := CustTable ',' cpt.v; CustTable := cpt.v; txtreq := 'select attrcolumn as v from objecttypeattrs where objecttypeid in (select objecttypeid from objecttypes where objecttypename = ''Sites'' and objecttypeclass = ''_DB_OBJECTTYPCLASS_CUSTOMINVENTORY_'') and attrname = ''Site'';'; IF LENGTH (ColumnName) > 0 THEN ColumnName := ColumnName ',' cpt.v; ColumnName := cpt.v; txtreq := 'select ' ColumnName ' as v from ' CustTable ' where instancename = split_part(''' $1 ''', ''.'', 1) ''.'' split_part(''' $1 ''', ''.'', 2) ''.'' split_part(''' $1 ''', ''.'', 3) ''.'';'; IF LENGTH (SiteName) > 0 THEN SiteName := SiteName ',' cpt.v; SiteName := cpt.v; IF SiteName is NULL THEN SiteName := 'Inconnu'; RETURN SiteName; END $$ LANGUAGE 'plpgsql'; --END FUNCTION CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION location_update() RETURNS TRIGGER AS $$ IF (TG_OP = 'UPDATE') THEN IF (NEW.IPAddress is not NULL) THEN NEW.DeviceID; NEW.DeviceID; Update FAM Set FAMLocation = find_sitename(new.ipaddress) Where DeviceID = Update FAM Set FAMLocation = find_sitename(' ') Where DeviceID =
END; $$ LANGUAGE plpgsql; CREATE TRIGGER check_ipupdate AFTER UPDATE ON Devices FOR EACH ROW EXECUTE PROCEDURE location_update(); CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION location_updateall() RETURNS TRIGGER AS $$ IF (TG_OP = 'UPDATE') THEN Update FAM Set FAMLocation = NEW.attr_ Where DeviceID in (Select DeviceID from Devices Where IpAddress like NEW.instancename '%'); ELSIF (TG_OP = 'INSERT') THEN Update FAM Set FAMLocation = NEW.attr_ Where DeviceID in (Select DeviceID from Devices Where IpAddress like NEW.instancename '%'); ELSIF (TG_OP = 'DELETE') THEN Update FAM Set FAMLocation = 'Inconnu' Where DeviceID in (Select DeviceID from Devices Where IpAddress like OLD.instancename '%'); END; $$ LANGUAGE plpgsql; CREATE TRIGGER check_sitesupdate AFTER UPDATE OR INSERT OR DELETE ON custinv_objtype_6116 FOR EACH ROW EXECUTE PROCEDURE location_updateall();
