RestorePoint for StoragePoint Restoring content from backup endpoints and backup content databases can be done quickly using the RestorePoint interface within StoragePoint. The content can also be copied to a new location within the farm. RestorePoint relies on the BLOB Store backups and Content Database backups that can be performed by StoragePoint. RestorePoint can also use content database backups created in SQL to restore content. Administrators should know: A staging area must be set up on General Settings before performing backups or restores. See Staging Path. To set up the Content Database Backup, please see Content Database Backup Endpoint. Two timer jobs must be run in order to use the interface: BLOB Storage Endpoint Backup and Content Database Backup. These are both on the profile page, under Backup Settings. To begin, open the RestorePoint interface from the StoragePoint main menu. Staging Path The Backup and Restore settings is where the Staging Area is entered. This path needs to be accessible by both the SharePoint Timer service and Microsoft SQL Server service account. 4
NOTE: This location can be local to the SQL Server and shared out, but a UNC path must be specified so that the SharePoint application server can access it as well as the SQL Server. Content Database Backup Endpoint Similar to System Cache, there is only one Content Database Backup Endpoint. This endpoint is used by all StoragePoint profiles where backups of content databases are requested. This endpoint is only used to keep content database backups, but it is subject to the same profile retention policies that are placed on content. The Content Database Backup Endpoint can be accessed from the main menu, or on the General Settings Page, click Configure Content Database Backup Endpoint. If the endpoint is already configured, click Edit Backup Content Database Endpoint. 5
On the Content Database Endpoint Configuration page, enter a UNC path for the location where content database backups should be created. Use the table below to configure other optional fields. Status Online Storage Endpoint should be available to associate to a Storage Profile and accept content database backups. (default) Offline (Read Only) The endpoint can be configured, but not made available for adding content database backups. The backups already on the endpoint are still read only. Select the adapter for the endpoint that is being created. The FileSystem adapter is currently the only available endpoint adapter. 6
Enter an adapter-specific connection string in this box. The Test Storage Settings button can be used at this point, or after completing the endpoint configuration, to verify that the endpoint is accessible. A warning can be sent if the endpoint encounters errors or is nearing capacity. Default addresses for system error and offline notification can be entered. Check the box to include the list of Default Notification Contacts specified on the General Settings page. Mount the Database Backup On the RestorePoint for StoragePoint page, Click the Mount Database Backup icon on the top left of the ribbon 7
to open a window that will display all available content database backups. If the list of available backups is long, use the column headings to sort the list of backups by content database, backup date, or backup type. You can also use the dropdown at the top of the page to filter which content database you want the backups for. 1. Choose where the backup is being mounted from. StoragePoint backups are the.bak files created by StoragePoint that are found in the Content Database Backup Endpoint. SQL Backups are backups created on 8
the SQL server associated with the SharePoint farm. 2. Select the backup by clicking on it. Make sure it is highlighted. 3. (OPTIONAL) If necessary, select SQL Server Authentication and enter the ID and PW that will be used to connect to the SQL Server. 4. Select a server on which to run the restore job. 5. If you want to be notified when the backup is available, enter an address. 9
6. Click Mount. You do not have to stay on the page while the restore is running. Click Run in Background to return to the RestorePoint for StoragePoint page. You can use the Refresh button in the ribbon to see the mounted backup after the job is complete. Restoring Content 1. Once the backup is mounted, navigate to the content that you want to restore by expanding the sections. 2. Right click on the level of List, folder, or item, and choose Copy. 10
3. Open the location in the destination tree view where the content should go, right click and choose Paste. You can only paste content to a level that will host it, i.e. you cannot paste an item into a Site Collection; it would need to go in a List or Library. When selecting items to be copied, they must all be from one bucket. For example, you can t copy files from different folders within a list. The Browse to Location option will open that location in another tab or window. 11
4. When you select Paste, the window that opens will vary depending on what was copied and the destination. Use this chart to make selections from the available options: Paste List Copy Options Default Explanation List Content Option: Rename List Gives the list a new name in the destination. Checking the box opens a text field to enter the name. 12
Copy Subfolders Recursively Copy List Items and Documents Copy Versions for List Items and Documents ü ü ü This option allows for folders and sub-folders to be copied recursively, down through any existing levels. Include the content of your selection. Uncheck to build structure only. Include major and/or minor versions of the content. Versioning must be enabled on the destination for the versions to be included. Preserve IDs for Items/Folders in list Permissions Select Copy All Versions (default) or the Number of versions to copy. When selected, this option will preserve IDs for any folders and items in SharePoint Lists, so each item and folder will have the same ID on the target as the item does on the source. If this option is not selected then SharePoint will assign an item ID automatically. Copy List Permissions Permissions unique to the lists being copied. Copy Folder Permissions Permissions unique to the folders being copied. Copy Item Permissions Permissions unique to the specific list or library items being copied. Workflows Preserve List Workflow Associations Run Job on Server: Send Job Completion to: Keep Workflow content types on the content being copied. Select the server from the dropdown on which to perform the restore. Enter a valid address to receive notification when the job is complete. Paste Folder Copy Options Default Explanation Folder Content Options Rename Folder Gives the folder a new name in the destination. Checking the box opens a text field to enter the name. Copy Subfolders Recursively Copy List Items and Documents ü ü This option allows for folders and sub-folders to be copied recursively, down through any existing levels. Include the content of your selection. Uncheck to build structure only. 13
Apply new content types during copy Copy Versions for List Items and Documents ü Content types that are unique to the folder are included, and hence, available in the Site Collection content type library, and can be used in other locations within that site collection. The content type must be in use for it to be included in the copy. Include major and/or minor versions of the content. Versioning must be enabled on the destination for the versions to be included. Preserve IDs for Items/Folders in list Permissions Option: ü Select Copy All Versions (default) or the Number of versions to copy. When selected, this option will preserve IDs for any folders and items in SharePoint Lists, so each item and folder will have the same ID on the target as the item does on the source. If this option is not selected then SharePoint will assign an item ID automatically. Copy Folder Permissions Permissions unique to the folders being copied. Copy Item Permissions Permissions unique to the specific list or library items being copied. Run Job on Server: Send Job Completion to: Select the server from the dropdown on which to perform the restore. Enter a valid address to receive notification when the job is complete. Content Options Paste List Items and Documents Copy Options Default Explanation Copy Versions for List Items and Documents ü Include major and/or minor versions of the content. Versioning must be enabled on the destination for the versions to be included. Apply new content types during copy Preserve IDs for Items/Folders in list ü Select Copy All Versions (default) or the Number of versions to copy. If you wish to retain the content type for the content being restored, and the content type does not exist, use this checkbox to have the content type created. The default content type will be used if left unchecked. When selected, this option will preserve IDs for any folders and items in SharePoint Lists, so each item and folder will have the same ID on the target as the item does on the source. If this option is not selected then SharePoint will assign an item ID automatically. 14
Permissions Options Copy Permissions Permissions unique to the items or documents being copied. Run Job on Server: Send Job Completion to: Select the server from the dropdown on which to perform the restore. Enter a valid address to receive notification when the job is complete. While the paste operation is occurring, the window can be closed and the progress can be monitored on the Job Status page. Click Run in Background to close the window and return to the RestorePoint for StoragePoint page. NOTE: If items are restored by RestorePoint for StoragePoint, and that destination has a StoragePoint profile, Run the BLOB Health Analysis timer job, perform a content database backup, perform a BLOB backup on the profile, and then run an Unused BLOB Cleanup. 15
Unmount a Database Backup When you are done restoring content, you may want to remove that backup from the list of available sources. Right click on the content database and select Unmount, or select the database and use the Unmount Database Backup button in the ribbon. A prompt will ask you to confirm your selection. Click OK. 16
Restore Timer Job Summary RestorePoint is the job representing the pasting of content. Click the Summary link on the Job Status page to view the details. From the Summary page, click View Report to view specific details about what was restored in that database backup. 17
Click the Click to View Restored Items/Error Detail link on the job summary page. 18
A detail page opens to show which items were copied. Use the icon in the top right to download the report to Excel. Known Issues If installing RestorePoint on a server that was not part of StoragePoint deployment, run the AppServer Install. Steps can be found in the Advanced Installation Guide. If items are restored by RestorePoint for StoragePoint, and that destination has a StoragePoint profile, steps should be taken to sync the change. When the restoration is complete, perform the following on the profile covering the restored content: 1. Run the BLOB Health Analyzer timer Job 2. Perform a BLOB Backup 3. Perform a Content Database Backup 4. Run the Unused BLOB Cleanup timer job Large File Uploads will not always copy correctly to the destination. There must be a StoragePoint profile covering the scope of the destination and the stub will copy, but the BLOB that it is linked to, will not. Therefore the endpoint must have permissions set up correctly to allow access, if necessary, from another Web App ID. When taking Content Database Backups with StoragePoint, the default path for backups on the SQL Server may update to reflect the Staging Path location in StoragePoint General Settings. This will need to be corrected if backups are also being created manually on SQL Server and the path is not accessible from the SQL server. Restoring single items for a task or calendar entry may throw an exception. Use caution when pasting items as sometimes the RestorePoint for StoragePoint page may allow list items to be pasted into libraries, and vice versa. SQL Backups that use passwords are not supported on RestorePoint for StoragePoint. This option was discontinued in SQL It is not possible to mount database backups on a SQL instance that is using AlwaysOn configuration. The Capacity Monitor Timer Job does not currently include the Content Database Backup Endpoint. 19
Occasionally, RestorePoint for StoragePoint may not be able to detect valid licenses. To remedy this, perform an iisreset and start and stop SPTimer Service. If uninstalling StoragePoint is required, and Content Matrix Organizer is installed, Organizer may have issues loading the page. Please contact support for steps on resolving this issue. Content Database Backup Endpoint Change If a StoragePoint profile is currently configured to perform content database backups with StoragePoint, there is a Backup endpoint on the profile. This Backup endpoint will still be used for storing blob backups, but no longer for content database backups. As of the 5.7 release, all content database backups performed by StoragePoint will be created in the Content Database Backup Endpoint. This same endpoint, along with the Staging Path, will be used with the RestorePoint for StoragePoint interface. Both the Content Database Backup Endpoint and Staging Path are configured on General Settings in StoragePoint. Neither RestorePoint for StoragePoint nor content database backups will work without these two locations defined. The first thing to do is create the new Content Database Backup Endpoint on General Settings. This location has to be a fileshare and uses the fileshare adapter. Old content database backups on the Backup Endpoint are no longer supported and can be deleted. They will not be deleted by the Unused BLOB Cleanup job, but can be manually deleted. They can no longer be used with StoragePoint backup and restore operations. Activating RestorePoint for StoragePoint With the Release of StoragePoint 5.7, a new feature is available that allows for item level content restoration from backups. The RestorePoint link will be visible in the main StoragePoint menu. If RestorePoint is not installed and configured, when the link is clicked, the page opens and will appear disabled. To enable content restoration, follow the installation and activation steps found in the RestorePoint Online User Guide. Both the Console and the Service need to be installed and activated on the SharePoint farm. 20
Once the Console and Service are installed, activated, and running, select the farm that will be used to restore items at the list and item level. 21
Return to the RestorePoint for StoragePoint page and use the refresh button to make the Mount Database Backup option available. At this point, the directions for required content database backup endpoint configuration, and for using the rest of the RestorePoint for StoragePoint interface start at the beginning of this guide. 22
