2 Adobe Photoshop Photoshop is a graphics-editing program that is used to create and manipulate images. Photoshop is considered to be the leading raster graphics editing software. The program s versatile nature makes it useful for a huge range of imaging tasks, and Photoshop is used in various fields such as animation, forensics, web design and much more. Animators use Photoshop s multilayered rendering system to create complex characters and backgrounds. They can also use the program to edit backgrounds and create animations from still images. 3 Forensics technicians commonly use Photoshop to process the vast amounts of photographic evidence that come from crime-scene photos. Photoshop allows technicians to process fingerprints and enhance images of crime scenes. Photoshop plays a prominent role in web design, helping site designers to create the backgrounds, text, site buttons and 3-D artwork for modern web sites. Designers can also use Photoshop to enhance photos and images for use on websites. Page 3

4 Adobe Premiere Pro Adobe Premiere is a video editing software package suitable for both amateur enthusiasts and professionals. Like most editing software, Premiere works by importing video from a source such as a video tape onto your hard drive, then allowing you to create new edited versions which you can export back to tape, disc or other medium. Premiere is a powerful editing tool, capable of producing broadcast-quality and high-definition video. Page 4

5 Premiere has a nice clean interface which is relatively easy to use for people of all skill levels. Premiere Pro s plug-in architecture enables it to import and export formats beyond those supported by QuickTime or DirectShow, supporting a wide variety of video and audio file formats and codecs on both MacOS and Windows. 6 Adobe InDesign Adobe InDesign is a page layout application for desktop/print publishing. It was originally released in 1999 as a high-end replacement for Adobe PageMaker, and competitor to QuarkXPress. InDesign is a professional application ideal for newspapers and magazines, posters, brochures, cover art, etc. Its uses range from print production to digital publishing. Primarily used for layout rather than as a content-creation tool, InDesign has is used to combine text, images, vectors and other prepared content into a finished product for publishing. Page 6

7 Current versions can export the InDesign file as an IDML file (InDesign Markup Language), which can be opened by InDesign versions from CS4 upwards; older versions from CS4 down can export to an INX file (InDesign Interchange format). Page 7

8 Adobe Illustrator Adobe Illustrator is a program used by both artists and graphic designers to create vector images. These images will then be used for company logos, promotional uses or even personal work, both in print and digital form. So what is Adobe Illustrator used for? It is typically used to create illustrations, charts, graphs, logos, diagrams, cartoons of real photographs, and more. Illustrator is often confused with Adobe Photoshop, or thought to be a different version of the same thing. It is not. Photoshop is a bitmap editor, Illustrator is a vector drawing program. Page 8

9 Illustrator works by generating curved paths (AKA Bezier curves) connected by anchor points. Shapes, anchor points and other information are stored as part of the file and can be modified at any time. Vector images can be resized without losing quality. These attributes are what make vector-based programs different to bitmap-based programs that store data as individual pixels only. The file format for Illustrator is Adobe Illustrator Artwork (.ai). It represents single page vector images. Page 9
