General remarks The following ground rules for artwork preparation and delivery must always be followed in order to enable both our in-house label print room and external printing contractors to achieve the best possible printing results. Optimal printing results cannot be guaranteed for artwork that does not comply with the specifications below. Our customer services and pre-print departments are therefore instructed to return any artwork to you for amendment which does not meet the specifications. Should further editing of submitted artwork be possible or necessary, we will contact you straight away. The current additional costs for graphic design work can be found in your quotation. To ensure that the production process is as coordinated and smooth as possible (and on time), please send your artwork to our preprint department as outlined below. Please note: Slight variances (tolerances) can occur when producing printed materials, as a result of cutting, punching and folding. Our label register for CD/DVD has an inner circle of 20 mm in diameter, and the outer diameter of the printable label area is 117 mm. Label registers that differ from these standard dimensions will only be produced for re-orders for which the first order was placed before 15 June 2004 (the date on which the label register and outer diameter was standardised). 1. Artwork preparation Our current label registers and dimensions for CD, DVD, and CD-R, and dimensions of the most common CD/DVD printed inserts can be found on our website as PDF files. If your product does not match one of these, your customer advisor will be pleased to inform you of the correct specifications on request. Artwork must be supplied in accordance with the specifications. Artwork guidelines: 3 mm margin from the cutting edge for text and logos 3 mm bleed margin (take background colour, images and graphics up to the bleed margin) Do not include fold, cut or register marks in the file 3/8

4 1.1. Image data The required colour modes are: CMYK for colour images, greyscale for B&W images and bitmap for line elements TIFF: TIFF image files must be saved without compression (LZW etc.). EPS: For an individual file, the data must be binary-coded. JPEG: JPEG files must be saved with maximum quality (minimum compression) and with the Baseline Standard format option. Other image formats such as GIF and PNG can be worked with, but the image quality is not high enough for printing purposes. Please embed your logos vectorised (EPS, AI, PDF) Resolution Line art: at least 1200 dpi Greyscale images, colour images (CMYK, duplex, triplex): at least 300 dpi Vector graphics: 945 lines/cm, 2400 dpi 1.2. Colour Colour mode Always create your artwork in CMYK colour mode and delete all unused colours from your document. Artwork with RGB colour spaces will be converted into CMYK colour spaces (ISO Coated v2 FOGRA 39). Colours can vary slightly as a result of the conversion Colour profile We use the ISO Coated v2 FOGRA 39 colour profile Total ink coverage Total ink coverage must not exceed 320 % for label printing, and 350 % for printed materials Special colours/coatings Special colours must be left blank and supplied as a composite PDF. A separate PDF must be created for coatings, which must have 100 % coverage. 4/8

5 Colour consistency Generally speaking, it is very difficult to achieve colour consistency across different products, e.g. packaging, booklets, inlays etc., as the products are printed by different vendors. In addition, a carton, for example, behaves differently in its whiteness than an illustration printing paper. We can only ensure and confirm colour consistency if you supply or request a separate proof for each product Fonts/font sizes All fonts must be embedded in the print PDF or converted to paths. Avoid using font sizes under 6 points Line weights Positive lines (dark line on light background) must be at least 0.25 pt (0.09 mm) thick. Negative lines (light-coloured line on dark background) must be at least 0.5 pt (0.18 mm) thick QR codes and EAN codes Codes must be created in 100 % black (C=0, M=0, Y=0, K=100) and should be created as vectorised paths. Please ensure that the codes are sufficiently large. The smaller the codes, the harder they are to read. Readability can only be guaranteed if the code is printed on a white background (0 % CMYK) Overprinting Please note: Overprinting is only visible and controllable in Acrobat Reader from Version 7 onwards. Generally speaking, overprinting should not contain any logos or text etc. 5/8

6 2. Supplying artwork Please ensure that the artwork you supply is clearly and unmistakeably identified. Always state the specification of the product used. Send us the artwork in PDF format PDF/X-3:2002 Standard. All PDFs supplied must be compatible with Version 1.3. Please supply composite PDF format only (no colour separation). PDFs must not be rotated. Booklets with several pages must be created as individual pages and exported. The crop margin must be at least 3 mm. Bleed and register marks must be integrated By ftp server Your customer advisor will be pleased to let you know the access details, user name and password for our ftp server. If any changes or conversions are required, your customer advisor will let you know straight away As an attachment You are welcome to send your files by to your customer advisor, but please ensure that the attachment is no larger than 45 MB By data carrier Please ensure that the data carrier you send is clearly and unambiguously labeled. We cannot assume any liability for unlabeled data carriers. In your own interests, please always send copies of files and not originals. Information of the label printing process Dot gain: offset printing 22 %; screen printing 0 % Font size: positive at least 5 pt; negative at least 6 pt Lines: at least 0.15 mm thick (0.35 pt) Overlaps: standard pt; use trapping element for this Register marks: when not using our template, the object must be positionable with guide or register marks; if additional editing of artwork is necessary, you will be charged extra for the actual time taken to undertake the work 3.1. Offset printing CMYK is printed in the following order: white or spot colour, CMYK, and finally either spot colour or coating. Colour accuracy can only be achieved with white underprinting. If you do not specify otherwise, we will automatically underprint with white ink. Black areas must be generated as follows: 60 % cyan, magenta, yellow and 100 % black Screen printing Up to six colours can be printed with accurate positioning in screen printing. HKS and Pantone C are used. The tone values range from 15 % min. to 85 % max. To avoid unwanted white space, an overfill of at least 0.4 pt should be used Digital printing Printed in CMYK with white solids; special colours are not possible. 7/8

8 4. Checking of artwork We check all the artwork we receive against a wide range of specification criteria. If any significant problems are identified with the artwork we will contact you to discuss how to proceed and to let you know the estimated additional cost or extra work that will be involved. 5. Binding requirements for supply of printed materials If your printed materials are not being printed by kdg and you are producing them yourself to be sent to us for final assembly, we request that you comply with the following: The printed materials must always match the current kdg specifications (size, grammage, perforation etc.). Your customer advisor will be pleased to send you the relevant dimensions and templates. The common artwork specifications can also be downloaded from our website. Please send different printed materials in separate packages that are labelled in accordance with our specifications. Your customer advisor will be pleased to send you the relevant templates. Printed materials for CDs must be placed vertically in the packing carton, and those for DVDs laid horizontally and uniformly oriented. Please reckon with an extra 5 % scrap rate for the supplied printed materials. Please note: Non-compliance with the above requirements automatically incurs extra work, increases the likelihood of errors and delays the printing process. We reserve the right to charge you for the additional costs incurred in sorting or manual packing, or to return the supplied goods to you. 8/8
