2 CMYK COLOR MODE PRINT READY CHECKLIST Ideally, files should be submitted using CMYK color mode. If files are submitted using RGB color mode, the files will be converted to CMYK before printing. Converting may result in color shifts, causing the printed file to look different than the digital file. Hard copy proofs are available upon request prior to production to show accurate color representation. Using Pantone color matching will provide the most accurate color representation. CMYK Color Mode Crops/Bleeds Resolution Printer Spreads (If Applicable) COVERTING FILES TO CMYK Below are a couple examples of how to convert your files to CMYK. Keep in mind that this process may vary depending on which program and version you are using. IN ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 1. Open File in Photoshop 2. Select Image > Mode > Select CMYK. 3 IN ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR 1. Open File in Illustrator 2. Select File > Document Color Mode 3. Select CMYK CROPS & BLEEDS Crop marks are needed on any file that will be trimmed after printing, especially if the artwork has a bleed. Bleeds are required in all artwork with an image extending to one of the borders as opposed to leaving an unprinted margin. Bleeds usually require an addition of at least an eigth of an inch (0.125 ) to each side and properly placed crops marks for cutting. E.G. A 4x6 postcard with a full bleed: the image size should be submitted at a minimum of 4.25x6.25 so that.25 will be trimmed off, leaving you with a standard 4x6 postcard. IN ADOBE INDESIGN 1. Open File in InDesign 2. Select Edit > Convert to Profile 3. Make sure all settings in the dialog box match the image below Below are a couple of examples of how to add crops/bleeds to your artwork. Keep in mind that this process may vary depending on which program/version you are using. IN ADOBE PHOTOSHOP ADDING CROPS & BLEEDS TO PDFs 1. Have File open in Photoshop 2. Select File > Print > Photoshop Print Settings 3. Crop Marks: select Printing Marks > Check desired Crop Marks 4. Bleeds: select Functions > Bleed > Set Bleed.

4 CROP MARKS BLEEDS IN ADOBE INDESIGN 1. Have File open in Illustrator 2. Select File > Document Setup 3. Select Bleed and Slug to expand it 4. Enter in values IN ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR 1. Have File open in Illustrator 2. Select File > Print > Print Dialog Box 3. Select Marks & Bleeds in the left hand side 4. Enter in values for trim and bleed marks accordingly 1. Have File open in Illustrator 2. Select File > Export and select the Adobe PDF after Exporting 3. In Marks & Bleeds, select Crop Marks and Use Document Bleed Settings NOTE: To avoid drawing printer s marks on a bleed, be sure to enter an Offset value greater than the Bleed value.

5 RESOLUTION Resolution can be described as the number of dots (or pixels) that fit horizontally and vertically into a one-inch space. The higher the resolution or the more dots per inch, the clearer the image will be. Usual resolution standard for printing is 300 dpi Below are a couple examples of how to ensure your files as high resolution. Keep in mind that this process may vary depending on which program/version you are using. PRINTER SPREADS When ordering Saddle Stitch Brochures, your file must be submitted in Printer Spreads. Q: What are Printer Spreads? A: A printer spread is the imposd position of pages based on how many pages are in a file. When a file is converted to printer spreads, the pages are not placed in consecutive order, even though the finished book will result in the pages being in numerical squence. See diagram below for more detail. IN ADOBE PHOTOSHOP To check if your file has the proper resolution for printing in Photoshop: 2. Select Image > Image Size 3. View resolution section 4. The resolution should be set to a minimum of 300 dpi. Max output is 1200 dpi As you can see, when an 8 page file is put in printer spread, Page 1 and Page 8 will be printed adjacent to each other with page 1 on the right and page 8 on the left. Page 2 and Page 7 will print next to each other, Page 6 and Page 3, etc. 5 4 IN ADOBE ACROBAT To see if your file has the proper resolution for printing in Acrobat, set your view to 300%. If your artwork appears pixelated then your artwork is low resolution.

6 Below are a couple of examples of how to convert your file to printer spread. Keep in mind that this process may vary depending on which program and version you are using. IN ADOBE ACROBAT 1. Have file open in Acrobat 2. Select File > Print IN ADOBE INDESIGN 1. Have file open in Indesign 2. Select File > Print Booklet 3. The default selection for Booklet Type: 2-up Saddle Stitch 3. In the Print dialog box under Page Sizing & Handling select Booklet Make sure your file is still the correct size before sending to print. Make sure your file is still the correct size before sending to print. PUBLISH AS PDF Although we can print other file types such as JPEG and PNG files, PDFs are the easiest to work with because it is the most universal file type. Also, any file manipulation can only be done if we have a PDF. We cannot access InDesign files, if you create tour file in InDesign be sure to publish as a PDF before submitting to print.
