1 Creating & Editing Video: imovie Document for Follow-Along Exercises Follow the instructions in each section below to try out the different options being demonstrated in class for imovie. I. Import a video to imovie 1. Start by downloading the following file from D2L onto your desktop (or other preferred location): a. PracticeVideo.mp4 b. Pulliamclocktower.jpg 2. Create New Event in imovie Library. Select imovie Library à File à New Event Name the event imovie Demo 3. You can import the video by clicking the import icon on the top or the bottom one. Import the PractiveVideo.mp4

2 4. Create Movie in the imovie Demo Event. Have the imovie Demo selected and go to Create à Movie à No Theme. Name the file QuestionsBank 5. You will see five sections in the working platform: Libraries, Content Library, Footage library, Preview window, and Timeline.

3 6. The next step is to select footage from footage library. Put the cursor in the beginning of the footage and drag the yellow line to the end of the footage then click the button. II. Editing the video 1. Split clip by putting the cursor on the second that you want to split then right click à Split clip or Command + B.

4 2. Adding background. To add background, go to Content Library à Maps & Backgrounds à Stars (you can choose any background that you prefer) then drag that background to the beginning of the footage. 3. Adding text. To add text, go to Content Library à Titles à Reveal (choose one that you prefer) then drag it to the background that you just added. Note: Double click the purple rectangle to start typing text in the preview window. Type: D2L Quizzes Tutorial

5 4. Adding Transition. To add transition, go to Content Library à Transitions à Cube (choose one that your prefer) then drag it to the middle of these two footages. Note: Double click (transition icon) can change the transition time. 5. Adding image. Go back to the imovie Demo event. Click the import button on the top to import Pulliamclocktower.jpg. After importing it into Footage library, drag this image or click to add it to the Timeline.

6 6. Add Music/Sound Effect. Content Library à Sound Effects à Modern (or one that you prefer) then drag it to the Timeline. Note: adjust the volume of the sound effect by double clicking on the sound effect track and you will find the volume bar in the preview window. Set the volume around 25 %, make sure Lower volume of other clips is NOT checked. 7. Now select the two footages in Timeline (hold shift key to select multiple footages). Click the speaker icon, set the volume around 90%, and make sure Lower volume of other clips is checked. Why? Because we don t want the sound effect is too loud when the footages are playing.

7 8. Cropping. There are three types of cropping: Fill, Crop to Fill, and Ken Burns. Fill: the whole screen Crop to Fill: Zoom in to one particular section Ken Burns: Set start section and end section For example: I want to zoom in at 27.8s. Split clip at 27.8s à Double click the clip that you just split à click cropping icon (in the preview window) à Crop to Fill à Adjust the cropping rectangle to the part that you want zoom in 9. Export the video. File à Share à File.
