1 InfiniGuard Configuration and Best Practices Guide for Catalog DPX This guide seeks to help INFINIDAT customers who own InfiniGuard systems and who also use Catalogic DPX, get the most out of their investment. It is also intended to help INFINIDAT field sales teams by providing guidance to enhance the installation and integration of Catalogic DPX with InfiniGuard systems. For specific compatibility information, see the Catalogic DPX Compatibility Guide. Catalogic DPX combines an easy-to-use, intuitive management interface with robust backup and recovery capabilities. With integration of InfiniGuard VTL storage you get the best of NetApp backup integration with the fastest and most reliable purpose built backup appliance available in the open storage market place. It is highly recommended that the installer be familiar with both the Catalogic DPX configuration and User Guide as well as the InfiniGuard User guide for highest success with DPX configuration. The following procedures describe the steps involved in configuring the InfiniGuard as a VTL backup target for use in Catalogic DPX backup environments. First FC Zone the DPX Server FC Ports to the InfiniGuard Ports (single initiator to single target). Note the port zoning (as it is important to select the proper ports in the InfiniGuard when creating the Remote Host Group for mapping a VTL to the DPX Server. For example: DPX server that has 2 x 16Gb FC ports DPXfc1 DPXfc2 DDE1 has 2 x 16Gb FC ports DDE1FC1 DDE1FC2 DDE2 has 2 X 16Gb FC ports DDE1FC1 DDE1FC2 The zoning looks like this: Initiators DPXfc1 DPXfc1 DPXfc1 DPXfc1 Targets DDE1FC1 DDE1FC2 DDE2FC1 DDE2FC2 You will see the FC WWPNs in the InfiniGuard User Interface under Config -> VTL -> Remote Hosts InfiniGuard Configuration and Best Practices Guide for Catalog DPX 3

4 2.Enabling Catalogic DPX to work with InfiniGuard In this space it is recommended to apply an Alias to the WWPN to make quick Human sense of it. Follow the procedure in the InfiniGuard User Guide for Creating the VTL. Once a VTL is Created you will use this alias to map your DPX server FC Ports to the VTL thru the InfiniGuard FC Ports. 2. Once the VTL is Created and properly mapped to the DPX Server port(s). You need to rescan the DPX server scsi Bus to discover the VTL Changer/Robot and Drives. Ex. At this point annotate the /dev/??? target device for each component of the VTL presented to the DPX server in order to validate the UI detection and configuration of the devices. 3. Assuming that the Catalogic DPX software has been installed properly. We need to do a few things to ensure that the DPX software can discover and use the devices. Launch the devconfwizard to configure the VTL. - [root@io-wt-44 bin]# pwd - /opt/dpx/bin - [root@io-wt-44 bin]# ls dev* - devconfwizard -./devconfwizard 5. Lounch the DPX GUI: cd /opt/dpx/misc/./bexgui & 6. From Device Management you will need to create a MediaPool for backups (DPX). You will need to allow the system to label devices using existing barcode labels. 9 3.Performance Improvements 3.Performance Improvements 3.1.Breaking up the Backup job You can increase the threads from DPX by breaking up the Backup Job to run multiple clients and directory streams. To run a Backup Job after it is created: 1. Open the backup job 2. 10 3.Performance Improvements 3. Run and Monitor the task 4. Change retention from default (90 days) to 14 days The monitor window will pop up and show logs and summary. The InfiniGuard Status VTL Performance view will show VTL performance. Home Dashboard will show partition stats of space consumption over time. 3.2.Deduplication Ratio In my case I ran 8 full backups of the server and never shifted (lost) ground in my based deduplication efficacy of approximately 8.4:1 (dedupe & compression). It is recommended you run full backups often with high retention values to gain the highest deduplication rates and fastest possible restore times. 11 4.Testing the Restore 4.Testing the Restore 4.1.Testing the restore 1. Delete the file /root/testfile.txt 2. Define a restore job: a. In the restore section of DPX UI Define a restore job b. Navigate and select the file to restore c. Save the task 3. Run the restore job: a. Go to Open a restore job and select the restore task b. Select Run and monitor restore job. 12 4.Testing the Restore 4.2.Verifying the restore 4.3.Backup replication Note Catalogic DPX cannot not import tapes from an unknown library, as such, there is no way that InfiniGuard Based Replications are restorable directly from the second site DDE. As such, Catalogic recommends that replications be configured at the DPX server as a backup pool copy target. This requires that the target InfiniGuard VTL be installed and configured to the DPX server and the pool be mounted on the DPX server as a COPY pool for backup jobs. This allows DPX to control the replication to the second library and remain fully aware of all data copied to that device. InfiniGuard Configuration and Best Practices Guide for Catalog DPX 12
