4 Abstract In astronomy, a void is an area in outer sace hich contains no galaxies These are vast exanses o darkness and emtiness This orchestral iece, simly titled void, attemts to describe such an area through various musical methods: long sustained notes deicting the huge distances aay rom galaxies, ide distances beteen uer voices and loer voices creating a sense o void beteen musical elements, and close distances and tight harmonies to recreate the sense o conusion and uncertainty that may be exerienced in an area o emtiness

8 void: or orchestra Program Notes: The concet o a void is something that ascinates me Everyhere e look, e can see something In the araay exanses o sace, there exist laces o emtiness; voids In this iece or orchestra, I am attemting to describe in music ho I ould imagine one o these voids to be There are moments here long held itches reresent this void; at other times a ide ga in orchestration beteen the very high and the very lo At the end o the iece, close harmonies in an imitative succession are intended to deict this vast sace o emtiness There are moments here I imagine the void to be a lace o comlete stillness and calm Yet other moments here maybe the void is a lace o sheer and total chaos The more I contemlate on hat a void is, or hat a void could be, the more I ind my mind changes This orchestral iece is a musical reresentation o my andering imagination As a comoser ho is seeking to learn and develo my crat, I have ound insiration rom many sources; mainly comosers ho are currently very active in their riting and creation right no Kaija Saariaho, EsaPekka Salonen, and Thomas Adès are three such omosers ho cature my imagination More seciically: Saariaho's huge musical orms and soundscaes, Salonen's melodic riting, and Adès' rhythmic comlexity are three musical qualities hich rovide me ith insiration In this iece, I hoe that these three qualities are evident and shine through
