Domain 3.0 Understanding Adobe Photoshop CS5 This domain focuses on the Photoshop interface and the basic skills necessary to begin working with images. 5 5
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions The Photoshop workspace has a similar appearance to the other Adobe Creative Suite applications. 6 6
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) The Application frame holds the workspace elements together, and if you move or resize the Application frame, the elements move together. As with all applications in the Adobe Creative Suite, you can customize Photoshop s workspace by arranging the various panels and bars. You can move panels in the workspace by clicking a panel s tab and then dragging it to a new location. You can create custom Workspaces and save them (Window<Workspace<New Workspace). 7 7
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) The workspace switcher allows you to reset the workspace, save a custom workspace, or switch between a variety of standard workspaces. Live Workspaces are a series of buttons on the Application bar that display the preset Photoshop workspaces or custom workspaces you have created. 8 8
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) The Tools panel, also referred to as the Tool bar is organized into tool categories. 9 9
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) A context-sensitive options bar is located below the Application bar. Context sensitive means the options change based on the tool that is selected in the Tools panel. Ex: The Brush tool has Size, Hardness, Mode, and other options to be customized as you see fit. 10
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) Selection tools allow you to select one section or multiple selections of your image. 11
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) The Crop and Slice tools separate or divide an image (often leaving the most important parts and removing unneeded pixels). 12
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) The Measuring tool group draws measurement lines, selects color samples, and creates comments. 13
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) The Retouching tools correct an image to remove image flaws such as scratches, red eye, and blemishes. 14
15
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) The Painting tools paint pixels on the canvas, which you can do on a blank canvas or in an image. 16
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) The drawing and type tools are vector-based tools that draw vector paths. 17
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) 18
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) The Navigation and 3D tools navigate around your image. 19
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) 20 Exercise: Exploring the Main Tools in PSD From the resources folder, open the Lake file. Working with every single tool in PSD takes time, so let s hit on the key players: Marquees Lasso Crop Eye Dropper/Ruler/Count Red Eye/Healing/Spot Healing Clone Eraser Paint Bucket/Gradient Dodge/Burn/Sponge Pen Type Shapes
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) Documents are displayed in the center of the workspace and can be docked with a tab or undocked without a tab (pull tab out to remove). 21
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) Photoshop panels are organized into groups with other related panels; click a panel s tab to make it active. Note: Many people call them palettes as well. If you drag the solid bar above the tabs, you will move the entire dock. A dock is a collection of panel groups. A panel can float in the workspace or be docked; this is similar to displaying a document with a tab or without a tab. Panels are available to work with colors, styles, and brushes. 22
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) You can use layers to apply nondestructive editing techniques to your images. You can also create Adjustment Layers to make nondestructive, editable changes. Nondestructive editing does not alter the original image data or degrade the image. Destructive editing alters the original image, and you cannot remove or alter the edits later. You can create a smart filter, a filter applied to Smart Objects, to create a nondestructive filter effect. 23
Objective 3.1 Identify Elements of the Photoshop CS5 User Interface and Demonstrate Knowledge of Their Functions (Continued) Exercise: Adjustments in PSD From the resources folder, open the Lake file. Make sure your Adjustments palette is open. Let s explore these options. Exercise: Adjustment Layers in PSD Using the History palette in PSD, revert your file to its original, unaltered state. Now, let s explore the Adjustment Layers options at the bottom of the Layers palette. 24
Objective 3.2 Demonstrate Knowledge of Layers and Masks The Layers panel in Photoshop displays layers, layer effects, and layer groups that make up the image and is one of the most used panels. 25
Objective 3.2 Demonstrate Knowledge of Layers and Masks (Continued) 26 Layers are arranged in the Layers panel; the layer order determines the appearance of effects and elements in each layer. It is a good habit to name your layers. Naming layers helps you locate a layer more quickly and easily as your project begins to grow. Once you save a document with merged layers, you cannot undo your actions to the unmerged state. Layer Groups allow you to group without merging (for visual organization). Have to layers that belong together but don t want to merge them? Link them! Layer Visibility options and Layer palette options
Objective 3.2 Demonstrate Knowledge of Layers and Masks (Continued) Working with Masks and Modes 27 By adding a mask to a layer, you can hide or reveal portions of the image in the layer that is beneath it in the Layers panel. A layer mask is dependent on the resolutions of the bitmap images. To create, click the Add Layer Mask button in Layers panel. A vector mask is independent of the resolution and is created using the Pen tool or a drawing tool. Created by selecting a drawing tool first, clicking on Add Layer Mask button, and then drawing the shape.
Objective 3.2 Demonstrate Knowledge of Layers and Masks (Continued) Working with Masks and Modes (Continued) A layer mask is a grayscale image that you can edit with black, white, or shades of gray. Hint: black conceals, white reveals The Masks panel allows you to make additional adjustments to the mask. 28
Objective 3.2 Demonstrate Knowledge of Layers and Masks (Continued) Working with Masks and Modes (Continued) You can add a blending mode to an image to change how pixels in the selected layer blend with pixels in the same location in the layer just below it. 29
Objective 3.2 Demonstrate Knowledge of Layers and Masks (Continued) 30 Exercise: Making Masks Go back to the Lake file in PSD. Let s create standard layer masks and vector masks Exercise: Editing Masks Once you have created a mask, use the Masks palette to alter your options for that mask. Exercise: Using Masks for Partial Image Adjustments Go back to the Lake file in PSD. Let s create a standard layer mask or vector mask. Next, let s use the Adjustments palette to alter only a portion of the image (the portion that falls within the mask)
Objective 3.3 Demonstrate Knowledge of Importing, Exporting, Organizing, and Saving You can bring images into Photoshop using the Open command or the Place command on the File menu. The Open command opens each image into its own Photoshop document. The Place command places multiple images into a single document. Scanning an image is the best option when a digital version of the image is not available. 31
Objective 3.3 Demonstrate Knowledge of Importing, Exporting, Organizing, and Saving (Continued) Image Optimization The Save for Web & Devices command on the File menu provides a method to optimize images for publishing on the web and mobile devices. Contact Sheets You can create a contact sheet in Adobe Bridge. A contact sheet is a collection of images printed together in a smaller scale, often used for proofing. 32
Objective 3.3 Demonstrate Knowledge of Importing, Exporting, Organizing, and Saving Exercise: Using Bridge to Create a Contact Sheet Let s create a contact sheet for all the images stored in the source files folder using Bridge 33
Objective 3.4 Demonstrate Knowledge of Producing and Reusing Images 34 Photoshop allows you to work with Smart Objects to perform nondestructive edits so you can preserve the original image and reuse it. You can open or place an image as a Smart Object, or you can convert a layer to a Smart Object (in Layer<Smart Objects<Convert to Smart Object) A Smart Object is indicated by an icon in the lower-right corner of the thumbnail in the Layers panel.
Objective 3.4 Demonstrate Knowledge of Producing and Reusing Images 35 Exercise: Creating Smart Objects Open the Pond image in PSD. Unlock the original layer, then select the layer. Go to Layer<Smart Objects<Convert to Smart Object. Exercise: Open as Smart Object Open the Pond image in PSD by using the Open As Smart Object option. Note the layer s appearance. Note: File<Place will always create a Smart Object layer, regardless of format type. Note: Some, but not all, features and edits within PSD are usable for Smart Objects thus their built-in protected status.
Objective 3.5 Demonstrate Understanding of, and Select the Appropriate Features and Options Required to Implement, a Color Management Workflow Color variations can occur at each stage when you move them from device to device. Each device has a limited range of colors it can display, known as its color gamut. The following factors affect why colors may vary: The source of the image (such as a digital camera or scanner) How color is defined in a software application Choice of paper or print media Variation between the colors displayed on monitors 36
Objective 3.5 Demonstrate Understanding of, and Select the Appropriate Features and Options Required to Implement, a Color Management Workflow (Continued) 37 Managing Color with Photoshop Photoshop includes a color management system in the Color Settings (Under Edit) dialog box that allows you to manage color settings automatically.
Objective 3.5 Demonstrate Understanding of, and Select the Appropriate Features and Options Required to Implement, a Color Management Workflow (Continued) Managing Color with Photoshop (Continued) When you open a new file, Photoshop compares the color profile in the image to the color settings that have been defined in the Color Settings dialog box. If the Ask When Opening check box is not selected, Photoshop automatically converts the image to the settings that have been designated in the Color Settings dialog box. 38
Objective 3.5 Demonstrate Understanding of, and Select the Appropriate Features and Options Required to Implement, a Color Management Workflow (Continued) Managing Color with Photoshop (Continued) Soft proofing simulates on screen what your document will look like when printed. 39
Objective 3.5 Demonstrate Understanding of, and Select the Appropriate Features and Options Required to Implement, a Color Management Workflow (Continued) Managing Color with Photoshop (Continued) 40 The way colors are converted from one system to another is referred to as rendering intent. Determined by profile selected in the Color Settings area. When you print a document, it is converted from one color space in your computer display and Photoshop, to another the color space in your printer. A color space is the range of colors, or color gamut, that a camera can capture, a scanner can scan, a printer can print, or a monitor can display.
Objective 3.5 Demonstrate Understanding of, and Select the Appropriate Features and Options Required to Implement, a Color Management Workflow (Continued) Exercise: Checking/Changing Color Settings Go back to the original Pond image in PSD. Go to Edit<Color Settings and note its original settings. What options do we have? Exercise: Soft Proofing Back in the Pond file, go to View< Soft Proofing and see the various options and changes you have available. 41
Objective 3 Summary Questions Explain the difference between destructive and nondestructive editing. Explain the purpose of soft proofing. What is an advantage of flattening layers? What is a disadvantage? What is a Live Workspace? List the two types of masks. 42
Objective 3 Summary Questions Explain the difference between destructive and nondestructive editing. Destructive editing alters the pixels of the original image and cannot be edited or removed later on. Nondestructive does NOT alter the original. Explain the purpose of soft proofing. It allows us to simulate the produced work without actually having to print/upload/publish. What is an advantage of flattening layers? What is a disadvantage? Flattening reduces file size and merges overlapping pixels. However, they are not editable like layers are and cannot be split later. What is a Live Workspace? A series of buttons on the Application bar that display PSD s preset workspaces OR your custom workspaces. List the two types of masks. Vector Mask and Layer Mask 43
