1 [news] NEWS MAGAZINE FOR OUR BUSINESS FRIENDS ISSUE 27 FEBRUARY 2005 HDTV The Next Generation! SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES and SONY Working Together For BD-ROM SINGULUS will manufacture production equipment for pre-recorded Blu-ray Discs (BD-ROM). It has agreed with Sony Corporation to jointly conduct research and development activities for the development of Blu-ray Disc mass production technology. SINGULUS will design and manufacture the BD-ROM replication lines for mass production, which will be distributed in the future by the well-established marketing, sales and service organisations of SINGULUS. Prototype machines will be available in Spring 2005 for single-layer BD-ROM and in Fall 2005 for dual-layer BD-ROM. BD-ROM mass production machines will be compatible for both single-layer and dual-layer discs. The machine is compact in size, similar to the current DVD 9 line. "We are very excited to be working on the Blu-ray Disc, especially at the birth of the new format, and with Sony who is one of the founders of the format said Roland Lacher, CEO and President of SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES. "We believe that there is a great future in Blu-ray Disc as the next generation of optical discs. We look forward to supplying our customers with competitive equipment that will enable them to make a smooth transition to the new high definition world. We expect that the long-term manufacturing costs for mass production of the BD-ROM will be similar to DVD. Although the BD-ROM is a newly-created format for the next generation, the replication machine itself incorporates a great majority of standard technologies, such as molding and sputtering processes, used for current DVD 9. SINGULUS is using its expertise in addressing BD-ROM specific requirements to realize the most efficient production methods. "We believe that Blu-ray Disc is the best option for next generation high density optical discs, said Mr. Masanobu Yama- Also in this Issue: n HD DVD-ROM & Blu-ray n Interview with Prof. Brandenburg n Direct Mastering n Opticus n STREAMLINE II DVDR-DL n STREAMLINE II DVDR 16x n Targets & Masks

3 [news] ISSUE 27 FEBRUARY 2005 page 3 pplier of CD and DVD inline manufacturing equipment. This success came from a dedicated focus on the optical disc market and innovate R&D leading to new proprietary technologies Interview About 3 rd Generation Optical Disc with Prof. Karlheinz Brandenburg* Prof. Brandenburg, what has yet to occur before the third generation of optical data storage is ready for mass distribution? Events will take their normal course. Increased storage capacity is primarily a matter of manufacturing technology. It will become a mass market as soon as large numbers of the requisite consumer devices are produced, and hence can be sold, affordably. The pertinent consumer devices are HDTV receivers and PCs with appropriate disc drives. Naturally, highdefinition content (films) must also be produced. But the technology already exists in all these areas. It would not surprise me to see prices decline quite rapidly. Which format will be accepted as the industry standard? Blu-ray or HD-DVD? It s too early to tell. Much will depend on the code that is accepted for players, i.e., the standard that will be supported by the new TVs. The U.S. film industry s insistence on preventing the transfer of data from Blu-ray or HD-DVD to PC s even with DRM stems from its fear of piracy and will be problematic for both standards. A compromise must be found although it may have a detrimental effect on the universal application of third generation data storage. What year do you expect the third generation of optical storage media to enter the mass market? The first consumer devices are already on the market. It may take more than two years, but less than four. In what areas of application will the third generation experience be a breakthrough? Initially in data back-up, as a storage tool. If the size of PC hard drives continues to expand (we will soon be approaching the realm of terabytes), even the capacity of DVDs will at some point no longer be sufficient to back-up or copy the amount of data needed to be stored. The third generation will also prevail in the world of movies, although the rollout scenario is not yet clear. HD players have a distinct disadvantage compared to the triumphant advance made by DVD players. Users also need an HD-capable display, i.e., in addition to a player, the consumer must also buy an expensive new TV. I do not foresee a breakthrough in music since even DVD- Audio has not yet found widespread acceptance. Will the market launch be delayed as a result of the format conflict? That certainly is a possibility. The film studios are still divided and neither format has emerged a favorite as far as content is concerned. But I hope an agreement can be reached before widespread marketing of this technology occurs. There is, however, another possible scenario: the history of recordable DVDs could be repeated, i.e., a variety of formats could be peacefully supported by all consumer devices. Technically this should be possible. Will the transition from the second to the third generation be reminiscent of the revolutionary and widespread replacement of records by the CD? Yes and no. The transition to highdefinition formats will surely be revolutionary and is already slowly underway in television, primarily in the USA. In five or ten years we will no longer recognize the home theaters in our living rooms. An HDTV unit is quite different from a normal television set. The new generation of TV monitors will someday have such high resolution that even playback of 3D applications may become commonplace. This will revolutionize the TV viewing experience although it is still just science fiction. Additionally, "digital cinema will become available. Its advantages lie primarily in the distribution process which will be of more interest to film rental companies and movie theaters than to audiences. Prof. Karlheinz Brandenburg What will the significance of the third generation of optical storage media be? Will it supplant DVD entirely? That depends in part on how quickly high-definition displays make their debut. The market launch is still somewhat sluggish but someday the industry will offer consumers so many additional features at such low additional cost that it will trigger a landslide reminiscent of the launch of DVD players. That may happen in the next couple of years or may take somewhat longer. Are there factors that could still impede the "Blu-ray / HDTV success story? The continued development of streaming technology, primarily broadband internet, is a threat to all storage technology. Ever-increasing broadband access will someday cause the balance to shift. In many households, broadband internet has already replaced the CD and DVD shuttle known as the "sneaker network. The internet share will depend on how attractive the content of broadband internet applications becomes. In the extreme, the third generation of optical data storage would exist solely to back up computer data. But internet entertainment would then require a tremendous comfort factor, because the internet will not be able to compete with the visual and auditory experience provided by HDTV. It should be noted, however, that the triumphant advance of the DVD was unfettered by competition from the internet. Prof. Brandenburg, thank you very much for joining us for this discussion. * Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology

Founded in 1995, producing only a stand-alone CD metallizer, the company grew to become the world's leading sup STREAMLINE II DVDR-DL Now Available for Dual Layer Formats SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES offers now a solution for mass production of recordable Dual Layer formats (DVDR DL) using the STREAMLINE II DVDR manufacturing system. Due to its modular design, the STREAMLINE II DVDR is already prepared to incorporate all new elements necessary for the production of Dual Layer discs. The Dual Layer option can now be ordered as an extension for new lines or as an upgrade for existing STREAMLINE II DVDR machines. Specially designed for mass production of the new high-end formats, the fast and reliable STREAMLINE II DVDR is proven for high speed DVDR with 16x recording speed and for Dual Layer DVDR with a storage capacity of 8.5 gigabytes. SINGULUS has developed and optimized a highly productive and cost-effective production process for DVDR DL discs which is based on a reverse layer 1 mastering technique, comparable to DVD 9 production. The additional thin film coating elements at different positions can be retrofitted to all existing STREAMLINE II DVDR machines. SINGULUS profound R&D activities in all multiply interacting process fields - including mastering and moulding - generate the expertise to design reliable and highly productive machines, to react quickly to new technological challenges and to extract all necessary process know-how within reasonable time for the transfer to the users of our equipment. Competence in systems business is considered to be essential to cope with the challenges of new disc formats. The prototype of a complete inline system produces DVDR Dual Layer discs at the headquarters since December 2004, first customer installations are expected in Q1/2005.
5 [news] ISSUE 27 FEBRUARY 2005 page 5 plier of CD and DVD inline manufacturing equipment. This success came from a dedicated focus on the optical disc market and innovate R&D leading to new proprietary technologies. STREAMLINE II DVDR Stability and Speed for 16x DVDR Production Process stability and reproducibility are the key factors to persist in the race of production speed and disc quality in the high-end 16x DVDR market. Tighter tolerance limits and more sophisticated disc layouts require superior machine technology and the successful application of new production procedures. The STREAMLINE II DVDR, designed for cost driven mass production of recordable DVD with cycle times below 3 seconds, has recently been industrialized for high speed (16x) DVDR formats with a cycle time of less than 4 seconds. Continuous process development both in DVDR mastering and moulding allow us to keep a wide process window and repeatable disc quality on highest level. Our results indicate a further decrease of moulding cycle time which helps to keep future profit margins high even when the disc sales price decreases. The process window shrinks for higher recording speeds; not only for the physical parameters of the disc, but also for the mechanical, optical and electrical properties of the recorder. The extremely stable and reliable STREAMLINE II and latest process know-how in all relevant fields allow to bring the productivity of the 16x high-end discs up to a level comparable to actual mass production of 4x and 8x media. Figure 1 shows the recording properties of a 16x DVD+R produced on a STREAM- LINE II with SINGULUS proprietary stamper and process design. The molding process is one of the most decisive factors affecting high speed recording properties. Besides keeping a high replication rate, it is the challenge of moulding to produce substrates with lowest possible mechanical deformation at highest possible speed. Repeatably good tracking and focussing results presuppose tight and stable limits for substrate variations. Extremely tight tolerances, e.g. substrate thickness variations of less than 6 µm (peakto-peak), are reproducibly achieved by the full-electric EMOULD molding machines. As a result, the focus and tracking properties of 16x DVD+Rs produced on a STREAMLINE II with EMOULD molding machines are repeatably kept below critical thresholds. (Fig. 2) Cost effective mass production of the new high speed (16x) and Dual Layer DVDR formats is our obligation. The STREAMLINE II DVDR is the universal tool to enter into those highly attractive market segments with a convenient cycle time reserve. lin. speed 16x 14x 12x 10x 8x 6x 4x 2x ang. speed [1000 rpm] 0,0 0,5 1,0 1,5 2,0 2,5 3,0 3,5 4,0 4,5 Data Capacity [GB] Fig. 1 Angular (yellow, right scale) and linear (green, left scale) recording speed of a 16x DVD+R produced with 4 seconds cycle time on a STREAMLINE II (SINGULUS stamper and process). Direct Mastering In-House Stamper Production for Everyone With the AM Direct, Singulus Mastering offers a unique recording technology that allows literally any replicator - regardless of the size of the operation - to run an own in-house CD and DVD stamper production. In-house stamper production gives several important advantages - like control over delivery times, guaranteed content protection and independency from third-party stamper services. The AM Direct cuts out much of the complexity related to traditional glass mastering, because recording is done directly onto a pre-prepared substrate. In the mastering process, only the developer chemical is required, resulting in much less process variables. The AM Direct can be set up in an ordinary office environment, requiring no special preparations. The environmental friendly nature of the AM Direct allows disposal of waste water in the city drain anywhere in the world. With an investment level of only 60 % of a traditional glass mastering suite (which requires a complete electroforming setup), the AM Direct makes in-house mastering economically viable in particular at lower production volumes. The system is extremely easy to operate and requires very few personnel to produce high quality CD and DVD stampers. Due to a significant decrease of substrate prices, in the order of 20 %, Direct Mastering has economically become even more attractive - and for a larger group of clients.
