For my project I decided that I was going to use Brief 1 On your own. I had many different ideas that I could have chose from but I decided that stop motion was the way forward for me. With all the techniques that I had learnt in semester one, this was the one that I felt most comfortable with tackling. As well as the stop motion I decided that I would make a small animation for myself that would be used at the start of any production I would create in the future. A logo that I had already made would be used as the main point for this.
Main Inspirations Research I took to the Internet and looked at lot of stop motion videos with some that really appealed to me with Vimeo, YouTube and other sites. A few I really liked which I have shared in the first two links. I collected others that I like in pinterest for inspiration. Pinterest
Decision made After a few weeks I had decided that I did not want to use Lego as it has been done so many times before, but I did like the idea of using toys, especially a Rubix cube. Being a silly person most of the times I like to make people laugh and felt that if I can get this across in my animation I would have achieved my goal. I sat and thought about what I could do for the script, at first nothing came to me so I decided to go and collect lots of my godsons toys. When I sat and looked at them I decided that we should have a party. Toy Story House Party
The Script At first I wanted to use a main character that would start off under my bed, release all the rest of the toys from the wardrobe and then he/she would lead them on a tour of the rest of the house while all the other toys are partying. In the kitchen I would come from the floor up to the centre unit where the Rubix cube would walk in and solve itself. When completed, camera would return to ground level and follow my character to the bath to see the water toys, through the hallway where a toy car race would take place on into living room then where two toys would be playing Tetris on the computer. When the camera turned around again I would circle some toys playing aboard game followed by me leaving the room and going upstairs to find more toys playing. On return I would show all the toys then entering back into my room.
Trial + Problems When I took a test shot with Police chief Wiggum I found it quite difficult to keep the picture the way I felt it should be. My plan was to use a dolly with camera attached follow him and then veer off to any other toys that we passed. After some more research and some advice I decided not to move the camera at all, then take the footage into After Effects and add the camera movements there. I also thought it would be quite difficult to show the Rubix cube actually being created so I decided to complete it first then reverse the video. When I started to film the cube I had the vision of the camera circling around the table to show fro all angles which did not work at all so I then set up again and used the same solution as before and add the camera in in After Effects. This was my favourite scene in the short animation.
Storyboards character leaves from under bed towards wardrobe release toys toys head in all direction- main for kitchen
enters kitchen to join the cube while cube walks to centre of unit character watches as solves character back on floor leaves room toy veichles drive over floor follow character
cars race through hall enter room to see 2 more characters camera zooms in between them watches tetris - rotoscoped
Production With all of my storyboards I took to the long process of creating my masterpiece. It took a very long time indeed and even had to repeat a few scenes due to lighting. Some of my scenes changed slightly too due to lighting, space for the camera and tripod, position and extra shots. But I feel that it most definitely was for the better. When all my pictures were complete I took all my footage into After Effects where I stringed everything together, colour graded it slightly (to make it match a little better) and add the camera movements.
Extras While I was shooting the scenes I decided that I would rotoscope a few pieces in two of the scenes. When the cars cross the finish line I would have Tom wave a chequered flag, which I would add in. Also for this scene I changed the camera angle and had it straight overhead where I would also add in 3 green traffic lights to signal the start of the race. As well as this I also added in the effect of the some of the stickers coming off the cube while it was moving. This was created in After Effects too by creating a new solid to the same size as the sticker and then just moving it along the path that I felt necessary.
Premiere Pro So the last part I had to do was bring everything into Premiere Pro and add all the sound effects and a few more movements of the final scene. Once I felt everything looked good enough to go I showed a few people to see it they smiled. Mission accomplished!!
