3 SO/EC SO/EC :1996(E) Foreword SO (the nternational Organization for Standardization) and EC (the nternational Electrotechnical Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of SO or EC participate in the development of nternational Standards through technical committees established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. SO and EC technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with SO and EC, also take pa rt in the work. n the field of information technology, SO and EC have established a joint technical committee, SO/EC JTC 1. Draft nternational Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting. Publication as an nternational Standard requires approval by at least 75% of the national bodies casting a vote. nternational Standard SO/EC was prepared by Joint Technical Committee SO/ EC JTC 1, nformation technology, Subcommittee SC 25, nterconnection of information technology equipment. 4 SO/EC :1996(E) SO/EC ntroduction This pa rt of SO/EC defines the HPP-LE Protocol Data Unit (PDU) format and interface for transporting SO/EC Logical Link Control PDUs over HPP. Characteristics of this HPP-LE include Encapsulation of arbitrary Protocol Data Units that conform to SO/EC Logical Link Control; Provision for 48-bit source and destination addresses conforming to SO/EC ; Provision for eight forwarding classes to distinguish, for example, among ordinary data PDUs, PDUs for services that require bandwidth guarantees such as packet video, etc. Figure 1 shows the relationship of this pa rt of SO/EC (in the solid rectangle) with the other entities shown. c (1) ô E. All standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this part of SO/EC are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated below.
