1 HP APA Overview for HP-UX 11i v3 This chapter provides information about the HP-UX 11i v3 Auto Port Aggregation (APA) and LAN Monitor software. Auto Port Aggregation HP APA is a software product that creates link aggregates, often called "trunks," which provide a logical grouping of two or more physical ports into a single Fat-Pipe. Network traffic is load balanced across all of the links in the aggregation, which allows you to build large bandwidth logical links into the server that are highly available and completely transparent to the client and server applications. In addition, HP APA provides automatic link failure detection and recovery, and optional support for load balancing of network traffic across all of the links in the aggregation. HP APA supports HP Serviceguard with certain conditions. For more information, see the HP Auto Port Aggregation (APA) Administrator's Guide for HP-UX 11i v3. To locate this document, go to the product page. On this page, select HP-UX Auto Port Aggregation (APA) Software. Failover Group HP APA supports the creation of failover groups (link aggregates in LAN_MONITOR mode), providing a failover capability for links. In the event of a link failure, LAN Monitor automatically migrates traffic to an available, standby link (port or link aggregate) in the failover group. Failover groups do not support HP Serviceguard. 4 HP APA Overview for HP-UX 11i v3
2 Known Problems Fixed and Features in different HP-UX 11i v3 Releases New Features in B Release The revision string for APA has been aligned with the HP-UX 11i v3 Operating Environments Update Release (March 2013). Enhanced APA troubleshooting APA internal tracing has been enhanced to capture required and necessary traces that are useful in debugging APA. These messages are logged in APA internal trace buffer. These traces can analyzed by HP Support using an HP internal tool (lanshow). With this enhancement you can trace all the syslog.log messages and messages in the internal trace buffer of APA, irrespective of HP_APA_USE_SYSLOG is enabled or not. The parameter HP_APA_USE_SYSLOG in file /etc/rc.config.d/hp_apaconf when enabled, selectively logs messages in syslog.log file. This parameter is disabled by default. Table 1 Fixes in the HP APA B Release Defect id QXCR Description Improving APA traces NOTE: MANUAL mode link aggregation has been deprecated. It is planned for future obsolescence. HP recommends to not use this configuration. Configuration with link aggregation in LACP mode is recommended. NOTE: LB_PORT provides a better traffic distribution across each of the physical ports in the aggregation. HP recommends using LB_PORT for efficient traffic distribution. NOTE: HOT_STANDBY is obsoleted in this version. HP recommends using LAN_MONITOR. New Feature B Release The B version of HP APA: APA over DIO interfaces support. DIO directly exposes the NIC to the guest. Support for aggregating DIO interfaces in HPVM guest is qualified in this revision of APA. LACP Aggregation and Lan monitor mode have been qualified for 10Gb drivers (iexgbe and iocxgbe). For how to create a DIO pool and assign the DIO interface to HPVM guest refer DIO Admin guide. For more information on the new features and how to use them, see the HP Auto Port Aggregation (APA) Administrator's Guide for HP-UX 11i v3. To locate this document, go to the go/hpux-networking-docs product page. On this page, select HP-UX Auto Port Aggregation (APA) Software. 8 Table 8 Fixes in the HP APA B Release (continued) Defect ID CR: JAGag34093 SR: CR: JAGag34099 SR: CR: JAGag34121 SR: CR: JAGag34122 SR: CR: JAGag34123 SR: CR: JAGag38403 SR: CR: JAGag38416 SR: CR: JAGag38440 SR: CR: JAGag38738 SR: Description HP APA fails to form a link aggregate when a single PPA is unavailable. HP APA commands abort because of an assertion failure. When adding an disabled link aggregate, an incorrect message displays. When adding invalid ports, an incorrect message displays. After modifying the vmtu value, the displayed value is incorrect. HP APA sends an incorrect LACP Marker response PDU. Under heavy load, outbound PAgP hello packets stop. When stopping PAgP, the group capability set by the administratormight be cleared. When a user application sends a DL_HP_HW_RESET_REQ primitive to a link aggregate or failover group, HP APA returns the error code 233 [EOPNOTSUPP]. New Features in B Release The B version of HP APA: Supports the TSO (TCP Segmentation Offload), also known as Large Send, feature if an aggregate is created with Ethernet cards that all support TSO or if the active port in a failover group supports TSO. Supports 64-bit MIB (RFC 2863) statistics if all the interfaces within a link aggregation or failover group support 64-bit statistics. Supports proactive failover for failover groups. Proactive failover is a cost-based failover policy in which each port in a failover group is assigned a cost. With this policy, the active port of a failover group is always the link that is the most efficient at carrying traffic. Efficiency is measured in terms of normalized port cost, which is the assigned port cost divided by the port's current link speed. The lower the normalized port cost, the higher the efficiency. Supports the creation of Virtual LANs (VLANs) over link aggregates and failover groups. Supports the aggregation of up to eight physical ports into a MANUAL or FEC_AUTO mode link aggregate. For proper operation, the link partner (switch or server) must also be configured to create a trunk using same mode on those ports that are connected to the physical ports of the link aggregate. LACP_AUTO and LAN_MONITOR modes continue to support up to 32 ports into a link aggregate or failover group. 8 Known Problems Fixed and Features in different HP-UX 11i v3 Releases
Supports IPv6 addressing for link aggregates and LAN Monitor failover groups. You can now use port-based (LB_PORT) and IP-based (LB_IP) load balancing for IPv6 traffic on link aggregates. In addition, you can configure an IPv6 address on the primary port of a failover group. Supports HP-UX APA operations in the System Management Homepage (SMH) Graphical User Interface and Terminal User Interface. Supports HP-UX APA operations in the new nwmgr command. Supports SSHA (Single System High Availability) Online-Deletion of NICs. Improves system and network availability. Supports LACP (IEEE802.3ad) fast timeout. HP APA can detect link failures more quickly. Supports Nortel's Split Multi-Link Trunking (SMLT) technology. A link aggregate can span over more than one switch, which removes switches as a single point of failure. Supports failover groups for use with HP Serviceguard. Supports the logging of status messages to thesyslog.log file. See the HP Auto Port Aggregation (APA) Administrator's Guide (formerly called the HP Auto Port Aggregation Support Guide (HP Part Number J ) for more information on the new features and how to use them. New Features in B Release 9
3 Known Problems This section can be divided into two parts as follows: Known Problems with this release (page 10) Known Problems with Switches (page 10) Known Problems with this release This section provides a list of known problems and limitations as known to HP at the time of publication. If workarounds are available, they are included. Defect ID: Problem: QXCR Inconsistent behavior while deleting aggregation onvm guest for DIO interface While deleting a DIO LACP aggregation in HPVM Guest for "iexgbe" driver a delay may be observed in deleting an aggregation. There is no loss of traffic, except some delay. This delay mostly attributes to two factors 1. Low number of vcpus 2. lan reset taking time This issue is not very prominent if the number of interfaces in the aggregation is lower than the number of vcpus. Defect ID: Problem: QXCR When heavy UDP traffic is run over APA DIO interfaces and if network cable pull out is performed, the UDP traffic tries to escape to other available interfaces. As the traffic is heavy this would take the system to hang state. This behavior is not seen with TCP traffic. Known Problems with Switches HP ProCurve Switches When disabling Cisco's Fast Ether Channel protocol on the HP 9000 server, the HP ProCurve switches block that particular port from further use. Severity: Medium 10 Known Problems
Corrective Action: To use the network physical port on the HP 9000 server, physically move the connection from the server to the switch to another non-cisco Fast EtherChannel port on the switch. Cisco Catalyst 5000 Switches Turning off Cisco's Fast Ether Channel protocol on one network physical port on the HP 9000 server might cause the entire link aggregate (the port it is associated with) to be deconfigured. Severity: High Corrective Action: Reconfigure the switch; do not include the port in the link aggregate being configured. See the appropriate switch documentation for information on how to reconfigure link aggregates. The Catalyst 5000 switch allows only two- or four-port link aggregates. See the Cisco Catalyst 5000 Configuration Guide for information about these limitations. 3Com SuperStack II Switches To interoperate with the switch, disable the Trunk Control Message Protocol (TCMP) on all of the ports that are being used with HP Integrity servers. Known Problems with Switches 11
4 Compatibility and Installation Requirements This section describes the compatibility information and installation requirements for this release.
