5 What is an SEI? The SEI (Site Ethernet Interface) connects a SCU (Site Control Unit) to an Ethernet network using TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). In other words, the SEI lets you communicate through a network to a remote SCU. When do I use SEIs? You would usually use SEIs when you want to connect to SCU s that are remotely located away from the PC/Server. The main Millenium PC can be either a standalone PC or the Millenium Server if you are using the Millenium Server/Workstation configuration. Ethernet Millenium Stand Alone PC SEI SCU Notice that you are connecting the SCU to an SEI instead of to the PC as you would normally do. Here, the SCU is communicating to the PC via the SEI. The SEI/SCU combo can be used ANYWHERE on a network and multiple SEI/SCU combos can be used on the same network. PK XXXX 10/03 5 of 22

Millenium Workstation Ethernet Millenium Server PC SEI SCU Millenium Workstation The SCU is communicating to the Millenium Server PC using the SEI and the Millenium Server PC is communicating with the workstations. Server/Workstation SCU #1 Modem SCU #2 Millenium Server PC Millenium Workstation SEI Ethernet SEI SCU #4 SCU #3 Millenium Workstation SCU #1 is communicating with the Millenium Server PC using a modem, SCU #2 is communicating with the Millenium Server PC using a null modem serial cable and SCUs #3 and #4 are communicating with the Millenium Server PC using SEIs. The Millenium Server PC is communicating with the Millenium Workstations. The SEI/SCU combo can be used ANYWHERE on the network and multiple SEI/SCU combos can be used on the same network. Notes: In all examples, SEIs and SCUs work as a pair. Buy at least 1 SCU for every 1 SEI installed. In some mixed communications installations, there can be more SCUs then SEIs but you can never have more SEIs. What are the network requirements? TCP/IP 10baseT (The SEI will not communicate on 100baseT) Static IP addresses What are the minimum Millenium software requirements? Millenium software version or higher. 9 What are the minimum Millenium PC requirements? Networked PC Pentium class PC. 128 MB of RAM or higher. 10 GB Hard drive minimum. 1 CD-ROM drive 8X or higher. 1 Floppy drive. 1 Serial port (2 recommended). Windows 98 Se and above (Windows 2000 Sp3 recommended). 1 Ethernet card. What are the wiring requirements? From the SEI to the SCU : Standard Modem cable (DB-25 male/ DB- 9 female) From the Network connector to the SEI : RJ-45 cable Figure 5. RJ-45 network cable. What are the serial wiring pinouts? 10 Where do I connect the SEI to the SCU? Connect the SEI Channel 1 port (CH1) to the DB-9 port on the SCU (J3 port connector). Figure 6. SCU J3 port connector on the SCU. This is where you connect the SEI. Using a standard modem cable (DB-25 male/db-9 female), you connect the channel 1 port from the SEI to the J3 port on the SCU. Figure 7. 11 How do I set up the SCU when using an SEI? Set the function switches (S5 switches) on the SCU for: Wired and RS-232. How do I program the SEI? The SEI needs to be programmed with vital information before connecting it to the SCU. HyperTerminal (a basic program that comes with Windows) is used for the programming procedure. Preparations A. Hardware and Software requirements. 1 PC with at least one serial port. This PC will be used to program the SEI. 1 Standard modem cable (DB-25 male/db-9 female). HyperTerminal program. 12 B. Information Requirements (from your customer s IT department). Serial port number you will be using to program the SEI with HyperTerminal (Usually, COM 1). IP address of the SEI. IP address of the Millenium PC (or the Millenium Server PC if using the Server/Workstation configuration).. The Gateway IP addresses (if any). The network class (A, B, or C) if your customer is using a subnet mask. Ask your customer s IT department the type of netmask they use: > Class A network > Class B network > Class C network. HyperTerminal Connect channel 1 of the SEI to the serial port of the PC using a standard modem cable (DB-25 male/db-9 female). TO PC Plug the AC adapter into a regular electrical outlet but DO NOT plug the other end into the SEI. Launch HyperTerminal. You will usually find this program by navigating from the start menu to: Programs -> Accessories -> HyperTerminal. 12 of 22 PK XXXX 10/03

14 When launching HyperTerminal, the connection description dialog box will pop up. In the Name box, type SEI SETUP (or any other name you choose). Click on OK. The connect to dialog box will appear. Choose the Serial port number where you connected the SEI to the PC. Click on OK. A properties box will pop up, you MUST configure your port as shown below: 14 of 22 PK XXXX 10/03

19 Type the SEI IP address and give it a name. Press the Assign arrow to save your changes Close Millenium setup Launch Millenium Log on Click on sites Program the SCU the usual way. Refer to the online help. Click on Communication PK XXXX 10/03 19 of 22

20 Choose the SEI name you previously programmed to link the SEI to the SCU Click OK Click Save The SEI and the SCU are programmed in Millenium. What are the general specifications of an SEI?
