6 Life cycle tree migration tool (Chesar 1.2 to Chesar 2.0) User manual 1 1 INTRODUCTION The Chesar life cycle tree migration tool allows you to migrate (i.e. 'convert') a life cycle tree built in Chesar 1.2 into a life cycle tree that can be imported in Chesar 2.0. The migration tool is a small software application that you can easily download, install and run on your computer. This document provides a step by step guide on how to install and use this tool. Please note that the migration tool is only provided for the life cycle tree and not for the other set of information generated with Chesar 1.2. This decision has been taken after consultation with industry based on the following considerations: The data structure has been largely modified between Chesar 1.2 and Chesar 2.0: this implies that even with a migration process in place, a relatively high number of manual interventions from the users could not have been avoided. In particular: o o o The plugged in exposure estimation tool ECETOC TRA workers has been upgraded from version 2 to version 3 according to ECETOC development. Consequently the determinants supporting ECETOC TRA workers assessment are partly different between Chesar 1.2 and Chesar 2.0, The SpERC structure for environmental assessment has been revised in agreement with the CEFIC SpERC group, The qualitative risk characterisation has been largely simplified in Chesar. In addition it was seen as more important to use the resources within the limited time frame for Chesar 2 development rather than for the migration of Chesar 1 to Chesar 2. Especially when taking into account the high resource implications to create a full migration tool versus the relatively low number of complete data sets created with Chesar INSTALLATION OF THE MIGRATION TOOL The installation of the tool consists of extracting the content of the zip file to a convenient folder on your Computer. 2.1 Installing and running the tool under MS Windows Download the migration tool from the Chesar website and save it to your computer somewhere convenient. Select the zip file and right click on it. Choose the Extract All option and extract the files to the current directory.

7 Life cycle tree migration tool (Chesar 1.2 to Chesar 2.0) User manual 2 A sub folder called ChesarMigrationTool will automatically be created, containing several files and folders as shown in the screen shot below. The example shown is what you will see if you run MS Windows XP. Your own particular version of Windows may look slightly different. Launch the migration tool by double-clicking on the file named start.bat. If the tool does not start, it may be that you are using a version of Java called Java64 bit. Please try instead double-clicking on start_x64.bat. 2.2 Installing and running the tool under Linux 1. Download the migration tool from the Chesar website and save it to your computer somewhere convenient. 2. Extract the content of the zip package to a convenient location using the command: unzip ChesarMigration.zip

Change the permissions of the start.sh file and run the tool cd ChesarMigrationTool chmod 755 start.sh./start.sh 3 LIFE CYCLE TREE MIGRATION TOOL 3.1 Which Chesar 1.2 files can be converted into Chesar 2.0 files? The migration tool is able to extract and convert Chesar 1.2 life cycle tree information from the following two types of files: Chesar 1.2 life cycle tree export file (file extension.c1z), exported via the functionality Export life cycle available in the main tool bar of Chesar 1.2 Chesar 1.2 CSA export file (file extension.c1z), exported using the functionality Export CSA available in the main tool bar of Chesar 1.2. In both cases the tool converts the file(s) into a Chesar 2.0 life cycle tree file (file extension.chr). All other information available in the Chesar 1.2 CSA export file will be disregarded by the life cycle migration tool. 3.2 Migration of a single (or multiple) Chesar 1.2 life cycle tree/csa file(s): step-by-step instructions The following paragraphs provide detailed instructions on how to convert life cycle tree data from Chesar 1.2 to Chesar 2.0. This is to be done following the steps described below: 1. Run the Chesar migration tool. The Migration tool window appears as shown in the following screenshot:

Select the files to be migrated Chesar life cycle tree migration tool is able to perform the migration of a single file or of multiple files at the same time. Select a folder containing the files to be migrated 1 and open it. Select the file(s) you want to migrate and 'drag and drop them into the main window of the migration tool. All valid Chesar 1.2 files will be immediately migrated into a Chesar 2.0 format and saved in the folder from which the files were originally dragged. To help users to understand which files have been successfully migrated to the Chesar 2 format the migration tool gives the migrated files a name that adds to the original file names the following -migrated-lifecycle.chr. For example if the original Chesar 1.2 file is Substance A.c1z, the migrated file will be Substance A-migrated-lifecycle.chr. 1 If you do not already have these files, run Chesar 1.2 and export the desired life cycle tree(s) (extension.c1z) to that folder.

10 Life cycle tree migration tool (Chesar 1.2 to Chesar 2.0) User manual 5 Illustration of the steps to follow if you convert one file at a time: (1) Select the file(s) with extension.c1z from your folder (2) Drag and drop the file(s) into the square box available on the migration tool window (3) The tool immediately analyses the file(s). If the file(s) has the right format, the tool converts the selected file(s) into Chesar 2.0 format. A successful conversion message appears on the interface, together with the destination folder information (4) The converted file(s) with extension.chr will be placed in the same folder as the original file(s).

11 Life cycle tree migration tool (Chesar 1.2 to Chesar 2.0) User manual 6 Illustration if you convert several files at the same time: If the file dropped into the migration tool does not contain any life cycle information or if the file has a wrong extension, then the tool will display an error message. 3. Import the converted life cycle tree file(s) in to Chesar 2.0 Open the Chesar 2 application and select a substance In box 2 import the appropriate converted file (extension.chr).

For example several fields relevant for section 3.5 in IUCLID 5.4 did not exist in Chesar 1.2 and have to be filled in Chesar 2 directly. In addition, you may want to revise or complete the information you had reported in Chesar 1.2, for example to provide more explanations for the CSR. 3.3 Migration rules applied The structure of the life cycle trees of Chesar 1.2 and Chesar 2.0 are very similar although some fields have been renamed. Therefore the migration tool uses a direct mapping of the fields: the content of each field from Chesar 1.2 is used to populate the corresponding field in Chesar 2.0. The full hierarchical structure and the relations between the uses (parent/child(ren)) is maintained. Please be aware however that the life cycle tree implemented in Chesar 2.0 has the following main differences compared to Chesar 1.2: 1. Environmental contributing scenario: In Chesar 2 an environmental contributing scenario is always generated when a new use is defined. Therefore, the same applies in the migrated life cycle tree originally created in Chesar 1.2: for each Chesar 1.2 use (called stage in Chesar 1.2 terminology), an environmental contributing scenario is generated using the Environmental label field defined in Chesar 1.2 for the contributing scenario label if it is available. In case the Environmental label field was left empty in Chesar 1.2 the label of the stage is used to populate the label of the contributing scenario for the environment in Chesar Service life consumer: The selection of the Article categories (ACs) for the stage Service life stage (consumer) in Chesar 1.2 is not available in Chesar 2 for the use Service life (consumer). However to avoid loosing data, the content of the Chesar 1.2 field Further specification (article)" is transferred to the field Internal remarks and concatenated with the free text available in the Chesar 1.2 Further specification (article) field.
