IBM Die Basis für (fast) Alles: Der neue WebSphere Application Server 8 Denis Ley, Client Technical Specialist WebSphere, IBM 7. November 2011 Schloß Sörgenloch
Agenda Key aspects of WebSphere Application Server V8 Simplification for Developers New Concepts in JEE 6 to Enhanced Ease of Development New Automation Offerings to Drive Developer Productivity High Performance Performance Improvements with WebSphere Application Server V8 Enterprise Class Deployment Reduce unexpected and expected operational down time Trends and Directions Glimpse into the Future
Simplification For Developers Increase developer productivity with a proven, standards based platform New Concepts in JEE 6 to Enhanced Ease of Development
The Java EE6 platform is Getting lighter Making developers more productive POJO based coding style used nearly everywhere Dependency Injection nearly everywhere - loosely coupled not hard-wired like an usual constructor - simple - no boilderplate code like e.g. a factory - complile time type safety in contrast to the service-locator JSF 2.0 JSP 2.5 Servlet 3.0 Frontend Context and Dependency Injection Business Service JPA 2.0 Business Service Business Service JPA 2.0 JPA 2.0 Business Logic (usually EJBs) Data JPA 2.0 Supported on WebSphere Application Server V8 ISV 4 Technical Executive Forum 2011
Managed Beans 1.0 Basic Model (JSR 316) Managed beans are container-managed objects with minimal requirements, otherwise known as Plain Old Java Objects (POJO). Advantages: Managed beans support basic container services, such as Dependency Injection Naming / JNDI Lifecycle Callbacks (@PostConstruct Interceptors Managed beans offer a lightweight component model aligned with the rest of the Java Platform Enterprise Edition (Java EE). natural starting point to encapsulate application functionality They can easily be formed into more powerful components Managed beans can be seen as a Java EE platform-enhanced version of the JavaBeans component model found on the Java Platform Standard Edition
EJB Container New APIs in JEE 6 Managed Beans provides basic POJO components with low requirements for container services EJB extends to provide complete simple annotated POJO programming model, including EJB beans with no interface Async method invocation extensions for long running work Stateful web services Typical transaction, security, and concurrency container services EJB Singletons as a first class pattern JVM cache patterns Serializer for potentially concurrent work App startup/shutdown notification alternative to servlet init listener Standalone EJB container for simplified unit testing AutoBinding - JNDI names are standardized and auto-created portability issues removed
Bean Validation - JSR 303 Provide a standardized, powerful and simple method for validating data Enforce Data Consistency by validation constraints Works well in Java EE or Java SE applications Seamlessly integrated and exploited in the following Java EE 6 specifications: JSR 317 Java Persistence API (JPA) 2.0 JSR 322 Java EE Connector Architecture (JCA) 1.6 JSR 314 JavaServer Faces (JSF) 2.0 Advantages Constraint definition is specified at the source. Single location No need to perform manual validation scattered all over the application. Data consistency Intended constraints are clearly articulated. Normally used constraints are readily available as built-in - Customized constraints can be defined. Example: public class Image filename must be = ".*\\.jpg.*\\.jpeg.*\\.gif", message="only images of type JPEG or GIF are supported.") private String filename; } ISV # Technical Executive Forum 2011
Simplification For Developers Increase developer productivity with new tools and plug-ins available for WebSphere Application Server V7 and V8 New Automation Offerings to Drive Developer Productivity
Monitored Directory Support Accelerate edit-compile-debug tasks during the development lifecycle Enhanced developer productivity through new monitored directory-based application install, update and uninstall of Java EE applications Drag & drop and command line support Supported with WAS Express, Base, ND & z/os Java 5 EE and Java 6 EE Supported file types: EAR (Enterprise Archive) WAR (Web Application Archive) JAR (Java Archive) SAR (SIP Application Resource)

High Performance Grow your business on a reliable, available, scalable, secure foundation that promotes business agility
WAS Performance Enhancements Reduce TCO through higher performance application foundations Java 6 JVM runtime enhancements JIT optimizations Application Performance Improvements vs. WAS v7 DayTrader: Up to 23% OSGi Applications: Up to 26% End-to-end performance improvements vs. WAS v7 including Up to 15% faster server startup time Up to 11% better vertical scaling on larger multi-core systems (on 16-way machine throughput is x 1-way machine) JPA 2.0 optimizations with DynaCache and JPA Level 2 cache WebLogic EjOPS per core: WAS EjOPS per core: SPECjEnterprise2010 results (Sept 2011) Oracle: $ IBM: $61.41 $0 $50 $100 $150 Cost per transaction (less is better)
Enterprise Class Deployment Building the "Next Generation" application server with the qualities of service required by enterprise class deployment
1 5 Transactional Integrity No transaction is ever lost or violated with WebSphere application infrastructure s built-in transaction integrity WebSphere Platform designed as a transactional server from Day One. For all transaction protocols (XA, OTS, WS-AT) On all platforms WebSphere automatically optimizes transaction costs and prevents configuration failures WebSphere fully optimized for 1PC and dynamically engages 2PC only after a 2 nd resource is used Distributed transaction contexts created dynamically only during the first remote request in a transaction No change to application configuration as it engages 2PC or distributed transactions the simplest configuration always works. Flexible configuration e.g. Per-application resource commit-ordering for DB/JMS scenarios IBM has been doing this right for 40+ years
High Availability Improvements Reduce unexpected and expected operational down time Build-in resource failover and retry logic for relational datasources and JCA connection factories Simplifies application development Minimizes the application code required to handle failure of connections to relational databases and other JCA resources Provides a common mechanism for applications to uniformly respond to planned or unplanned outages Administrator can tailor datasources and connection factory configuration based on application needs: number of connection retries alternate/failover resource pre-population of alternate/failover resource connection pool auto failback Improved HA support for messaging applications Reconnect to a standby gateway queue manager when an active queue manager fails or becomes available
